Area baseball playoffs have already started, Team Canada started practices for the big series coming' up in early September and it's only three weeks to the annual presentation of the Mid-Western rodeo in Exeter. The four baseball teams in Crediton are into WOAA playoffs hopefully on the way to further competition on the ° provincial level. Sam Pollock and his four coaches started twice a day workouts at the Montreal Forum Tuesday and these will continue for about three weeks. This is the third group of players to carry the Team Canada banner in an attempt to attain togetherness which eluded their predecessors in International competition. Coaches Scotty Bowman, Don Cherry, Bobby Kromm and Al MacNeil will be trying to mould 31 players into a championship club. Two come from the WHA. They are Bobby Hull and Paul Shmyr. In talking about the four coaches system Pollock ex- plained, "It's the ideal approach. We have four experienced men who don't have to try and prove themselves. They are very intelligent fellows with different approaches and per- sonalities." Members of the Mid-Western Rodeo are quickly com- pleting plans fee the Labour Day weekend rodeo which is expected to be bigger and better than ever. The latest meeting of directors held Wednesday at- tracted 23 enthusiastic persons and they all showed the desire of pitching in and making this one of the best events ever held here. Merchants of the town are also being encouraged to participate on Frontier Street at the rodeo grounds with dis- plays. Four food booths will be on the grounds to take care of appetites of the many visitors expected. Volunteers are still needed for the food booths. Anyone wishing to donate their services should get in touch with Bill Dinney or Ben Hoogenboom. Chairman Glenn Northcott, secretary Jack Malone and publicity chairman Ned Ryan, Dalt Finkbeiner, Barry Mousseau and the rest of the executive have been doing an excellent job in promoting the rodeo. Remember it's Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5. Shows begin at 2 p.m. each day. Get out the liniment Anyone with a spare bottle of liniment or other suitable medicinal substance could do a good business Sunday after- noon at the Dashwood ball park. At two o'clock, the 1968 version of the Dashwood Tigers will come out of retirement in an attempt to show they still are handy on the ball diamond „ They will be meeting the present day Tigers who under new Ontario Baseball Association rules are now classed as Senior "B". The 1968 club won the OBA Intermediate "D" crown. Three members of the 1968 club are still active with the present team but they will be in uniform, for the older team, They are Bill Schade and Bob and Jim Hoffman. The game will be reduced to seven innings possibly to give the veterans a better chance or keep 1968 Tiger manager Glenn Webb down to one cigar. Camping invasion The annual camp-out of the Exeter Nomads at EXeter Community Park for the weekend appears to be very successful, Lois Armstrong of the Nomads reported 114 units had already registered early in the week and she expects the total should reach 150 by Friday night when activities get underway.. In connection with the camp-out, rec director Jim McKinlay asks us to pass along a couple of items regarding the tennis courts. The courts will be reserved Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for use by the visiting campers. Others wishing to use the tennis courts from 6 p.m, Fri- day to 6 p.m. Sunday are asked to use the entrance via the high school grounds instead of the usual way by the arena. Hockey star injured A member of the 1975-76 Lucan-Ilderton Jets suffered a serious injury in an accident last week, Rick Martin suffered a broken pelvis while employed at a construction job and is expected to be in hospital for at least five weeks. Martin was to leave for Holland in about three weeks to take on a hockey coaching and playing position for the winter. Before joining the Jets he was a scoring star with the London Knights of the Junior A OHA. Eight strong teams will be competing including the Ex- eter Royals and the Lucan Irish. Zurich arena manager Gerry Rader reports that the Ingersoll Umpires Associa- tion will be taking care of the officiating. Successful days Congratulitions are in order to everyone connected with Dashwood's recent Friedsburg Days in presenting a very entertaining and interesting event. The new events including the soap bbx: derby and pet show proved very successful as were the tug-of-war and arm wrestling. The division champs in the arm wrestling were Dennis Lamport, Larry Skinner, Glenn Thompson and Jim Moffatt while Eleanor Weigand was the strongest female com- petitor, Herb Piper has promised to 'build' a better hill for next year's soap hex derby, so local kids better start planning their machines right now.
