Storms cost considerable Damage in storms this year has reselted in a severe blow to the budget of the Exeter Public Utilities Commission, At their Thursday morning meeting this week, Com- missioners learned that the wind storm will cost about $6,500. "That's a bare minimum es- timate," manager Hugh Davis stated. In addition, he reported that the electrical storm a week earlier had resulted in damage of about $1,500, The March ice storm cost to the PUC was around $20,000. A portion of that cost will be paid by Exeter council through damage to the street lighting system. Davis, who terminated his holiday early to return to Exeter following last Friday's wind storm emergency, said things were damaged in the storm that he didn't believe possible, Looking at the damage, he said it was extremely fortunate no one was killed or injured, One crash in Exeter Constable Kevin Short estimated damages at $250 in the only accident investigated this week by officers of the Exeter police department, At 3:35 p.m. Tuesday a vehicle driven by William Bailey, London was in collision with a tractor driven by Kenneth Rader, Dash- wood. The mishap occurred at the intersection of Highways 4 and 83 at the north end of Exeter. A pair of ladies bifocal prescription sun glasses has been turned into the local police office. They may be picked up by proving ownership. tc:1 1401 PaRTICIP3171017 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish REV. J. The Exeter club had about 35 members before the weekend, and Mr. Kirk said another 10 signed up during the conference. He said there is an education course for young CBers in the form of a walkie talkie club, The number of accidents in Exeter was up slightly during the month of July, but damages were well below average. There were 14 accidents with damages set at $5,465, Only one injury was reported, that to a bike rider who ran into the rear of a vehicle on Main Street. Other statistics included in the monthly report given by Chief Ted Day were as follows: 46 charges and 63 warnings under the Highway Traffic Act, 11 charges under the Liquor Control Act, one charge under the Nar- cotics Control Act, 19 parking tickets issued, 22 bike riders cautioned, eight places of business found insecure, 12 Children are taught to be cour- teous while on the air and how to use their units to find lost people. If you are in trouble, he said, CBers "will put something together. "You help one another, that's how CBers are." Most conference discussions were held at Vanastra. Visitors were housed in trailers at the site. animal complaints. There was only one break and enter with the loot being $2. However, the damage caused in the entry was $150. A charge has been laid as a result of the in- cident. There were three thefts of under $200 with the stolen property valued at $65, none of which has been recovered, and one theft where the stolen property was over $200. That total was $225 and the incident is still under investigation. The police worked a total of 52 overtime hours during the month, due primarily to the sidewalk sale days and the two severe storms which lashed Exeter. Exeter council will request their solicitors to take the necessary action against Contractor who left a drain un- capped in the Dow subdivision recently. The sanitary sewer ended up being polluted with mud during the heavy rain and several property owners in the area experienced problems. "It's cosily to clean drains," Mayor Shaw stated in advising council that some action should be taken, Want council behind centre "Council should actively get behind the campaign, " Mayor Bruce Shaw stated Thursday night after a compromise had been reached regarding the site of the new South Huron recreation centre. He said council has to take the lead in tile project. "We would certainly like council to show some visible signs of support," commented chairman John Stephens. "You're with us, but no one sees it," he explained. Councillor Ted Wright noted that some citizens are still of the opinion that a swimming pool will be included in the first phase of the centre. "We have no intention to push, a pool at this time," Stephens replied. "Can that-be in the headlines?" finance chairman Ron Bogart questioned, indicating that he too still found that some people thought a pool was to be included, The first phase will include only an arena and hall. Committee start arena discussion Deputy-reeile Tom MacMillan told Exeter council this week that the special committee named to investigate the„, 'disposition of Exeter's condemned arena has already commenced deliberation. He indicated that the com- mittee had planned to call ten- ders for the dismantling of the arena to determine what income may be generated from this source. However, this was termed "a little hasty" and the committee have shelved those plans for the immediate future. The committee consists of MacMillan, Councillor Lossy Fuller and RAP member Gaylan Josephson. Their final report to council is to be made by the first meeting in September.
