Exeter wins
swim meet
The Exeter Swim Team was on
top when the points were tallied
Wednesday at a triple meet at the
Lucan Swimming Pool.
In the 9 and 10 year old division
boys Steve and Alex Balaz and
Scott Jamieson rolled up a lot of
points when they figured in first,
second, or third spots in all four
swimming events. Danette
McLeod placed first in two events
and finished second in another to
lead the 11 and 12 year old girls.
Scott Pincombe and Rick Flet-
cher faired well in the boys
category.
Shiela McLeod took three firsts
in the freestyle, backstroke and
the butterfly to make the best
showing in girls 13 and 14.
Jill Tuckey was first in the
individual medley and second in
the freestyle and butterfly in the
15 and over division to add to
Exeter's already large lead over
the opposition. Doug Fletcher
took two firsts in 15 and over also.
Behind Exeter, St. Marys
placed a distant second and
Lucan took third,

Grand Bend douncil Tuesday
night declared war on dogs
running at large in the village
and on the beach.
Pressure will be put on the
London Humane Society to in-
crease weekly patrols in the
village.
Only one dog has been picked
up by the animal control officer
the past month according to his
latest report.
To this councillor Bob Simpson
replied, "On any given day I can
see a dozen dogs in a half hour.
They are running all over the
place.".
Despite being asked to report to
the village office each time he is
in the village, the dog catcher has
not apparently been doing so.
Councillors suggested if a visit
is not made to the office on future
patrols it would not be considered
a visit and pay would be withheld.
The London Humane Society
receives $7 per hour and 20 cents
per mile for each patrol to the
summer resort.
In other business, council;
agreed to taking all lifeguards off
duty on the beach whenever

water conditions were unsafe for
swimming and the red flags
signifying these conditions were
up.
When their services are not
needed at the beach, the
lifeguards are to report to the
village officer for other duties.
Learned that a paddle boat
used by the lifeguards had been
stolen from the beach.
Heard a suggestion from
councillor Bill Baird that all
garbage should be placed in
plastic begs when put out for
collection.
Agreed with a suggestion from
councillor Bob Simpson that a PA
system he used on the beach to
warn swimmers of unsafe water
conditions. Simpson added, "We
apparently have as many as 5,000
persons on the beach sometimes
and we should take more
precautions.
Endorsed the resolution from
the town of Exeter asking the
Province of Ontario to abide by
building codes in effect when
many of the arenas which have
been closed were built.
Resort's
swimming
program full
About 200 children are taking
swimming lessons in Grand
Bend this summer and loving it.
Debi Wooden of Exe'ter, in charge
of the swimming program, says
classes are jammed every week
and they have had to turn some
people away when certain weeks
were full.
The smallest children accepted
for lessons must be at least
40" in length so they can touch
the bottom of the pool at the
Green Forest Hotel where their
classes take place. As Tadpoles
they learn to get used to the
water and to float. When they
master this they emerge into the
frog class where they learn to
swim a little and back float with
a flutter kick. From here its on to
beginners where they begin
swimming front and back, drown-
proofing and treading water.
The next step up puts them in
the Dolphins class and this means
they graduate from the pool to
the lake. Of the five lessons per
week the Dolphins take, two, are
in the lake and three in the pool.
After Dolphins comes Junior
Red Cross, Intermediate Red
'Cross and Senior Red Cross.
There are also live canditates
for bronze medallion and leader
control life-guarding courses.p
Debi of course does not teach
all the classes. Paul Downing
of Woodstock is also a qualified
instructor while Gail Gowan,
London; Mary Helen Linsdell,
London and Standy Stephenson,
London assist.
Registration for classes is held
every Saturday morning at the
municipal office in Grand Bend.
It is $5 per week for one-half
hour classes or $13 for three
weeks.

The tide seems to have turned
for the Exeter Centennial Soccer
club. The Seniors came back
from a 5-0 drubbing last Sunday
to tie the Grand Bend club 1-1 in
action at the Canners Field
Sunday evening,
The game went Exeter's way
throughout the first half as the
Centennial forwards were con-
stantly at the Grand Bend goal.
But just as often as the Exeter
attackers were near the goal,
they kicked the ball out of bounds
or were stopped short by the
Grand Bend goalie. The Exeter
attack was varied and Exeter's
goalie handled the ball only twice
in the first half.
Exeter was first on the
scoreboard halfway through the
first half when John' Mueller'
headed the ball in from a corner
kick. ,But Grand Bend tied the
score at the 35 minute mark when
there was a defensive miscue
between the Exeter goalie and a
defender when neither could

reach the ball in time, and a
Grand Bend forward kicked the
ball into the empty net. Tile
second half was again Exeter's
half, but no goals were scored on
either side.
The Centennials continue
league action on Sunday wheil
they take on Lucan in Exeter at 2
p.m.
The young son watched his
father finish a big Thanksgiving
dinner and then loosen his belt.
"Look, Mommy," he exclaimed,
"Dad's just moved his decimal
