According to Mr. Macdougall, a for-
mer colleague, the John A. Ministry
have never hesitated when their inter-
ests demanded it, to "garble and sup -
pr" public de iuments asked for by
Parliament It is not, therefore, sur-
prising that the tamp individuals should
made statements in their own defence
contrary to fact and in opposition to
documentary evidence of the strongest
possible nature. Neither is it remark-
able that Sir John and 1 anttevin should
have destroyed all the documents that
paned between them and Sir Hsieh and
t41 -tier in relation to the disposal of the
Pacific Charter, and the Allan election
bribery fend.
The I'rvmier's chief justification for
taking Allan's money, and undertaking
to spend it in electing a "Railway
ul Z;:,U.ut ll,-10 "5.-4a leaner mill at N111) ti scriber, Lot N0, 1,
Parliament," was that Sir Ilngh had
10t,000,000 invested in ships, and it was
of "vital importane," to him- to have
the Pacific Railway tributary to his
steamers. The doctrine that because
Sir Hugh is enormnesly rich, the whole
country must pay tribute to him, and it's
railway be made to run only in his
favor, is the most in netroua and start-
ling that could possibly bo propounded.
When the Premier accepted Allan's gold - s
to carry out Allan's railway policy, he ap•
pears to have forgotten that his sworn ditty
to the people he represents was to guard
aril. interests against the encroachments
of all such monoaaO,t•, not to be the paid
agent and purchased Cave of the wealthy
