AILSA CRAIG
For the many residents of Ailsa
Craig and area who stayed
around town to enjoy the annual
Gala Days last weekend, it
proved an excellent decision,
Sunny skies and gentle breezes
prevailed all weekend giving
perfect atmospheric conditions to
a gala weekend.
This year's activities were
kicked off by nothing less than a
turtle parade. Some thirty-two
entries including number of
floats, carried the wide assort-
ment of turtles in pots, pans,
pails, jars and even a coffee
percolator! They were
ceremoniously transported in
gaily decorated wagons, bikes,
trikes, trucks - and even a canoe,
Prizes were awarded to the top
three turtle floats, with ten and
six year old Dean and Todd
Bender taking first place with
their float depicting the old tale of
the Tortoise and the Hare,
Each of the winners in the
children's races were awarded
"an Olympic medal". In the sack
and three legged races cash
prizes were also awarded.
The main event of Saturday's
programme was the turtle races.
With over eighty turtles entered
in the race it was obvious turtle
racing has become a major sport
in Ailsa Craig!
Twelve different races were
held with Dean Bender coming up
the grand champion turtle owner.
It is hoped that the winning turtle
will be flown to Boissevain,
Manitoba next month to take part
in the Turtle Derby on August 14-
15.
Trophies and cash prizes were
awarded to owners of the first,
second and third place turtles in

each of the twelve races,
Two hundred and fifty took
advantage of the chicken bar-
beque Saturday evening which
was followed by live en-
tertainment at the ball park.
Sunday morning another 300
were up bright and early and
back down at the ball park for a
hearty breakfast of pancakes,
bacon and eggs, juice and coffee.
Joint sponsors of the Gala
Days, the Ailsa Craig Business
Association and the Lions Club
challenged each other to a game
of slow pitch Sunday afternoon.
Good crowds were again on hand
and cheered the Lions Club on to
a win of 29 to 13.
The Ministerial Association
held a joint Church Service
following the ball game. The Rev.
David Brunner was the speaker.
Once again the beef barbeque
proved a tremendous success
with 450 persons being served.
Everyone was then invited to
enjoy the Gospel Sing which
featured the Woodburn family of
London, which included all ten of
the family members, Ailsa
Craig's Jana Lyn Stewart also
inspired the audience with
several numbers,
Winners of stereo and T,V. draw
Saturday night's Gala Days
events were climaxed with the
pulling of the winning tickets for
the stereo and television sets
sponsored by the Business
Association.
Wilfred McAdams proved the
lucky winner of the stereo while
Mr. Jeffries of Appin took home
the television.
Mrs. Leila Walsh was the lucky
winner of the hand-made quilt by
the Ladies Auxiliary.
AC Turtle Races
Trophies were donated by Ailsa
Craig businesses to winners in
the 10 turtle races held Saturday
in conjunction with Gala Days.
Dean Bender was the top
competitor with his turtle win-
ning the tenth race and the
Wayne Schlegel Real Estate
trophy and then going on to take
the grand championship and the
McNair's Grocery and Snack Bar
award.
In the first four events, the
Carman Pickering Logging,
United Co-Operatives, KOA
Shady Pines Campground and
Stewart Seeds trophies were
taken by Billy McIntosh, Jeff
Boerkamp, Vicky Slater and
Brenda Collins.
Rhonda Steeper, Cathy
Salisbury, Aimee Ropp, John
McAlpine and Janet Bender won
the next races with trophies
provided by Pinecrest Dairies,
