MADAM HILDA READY TO THROW Cuties to entertain in comedy ball routine Entertainment and laughs galore will be on tap for area sports fans at Exeter Community Park Monday night when the California Cuties will be ap- pearing for an exhibition softball game. The Cuties are a novelty team of male softball players who are dressed in women's clothing. The team is headed by owner- manager Trino Palacios who is . better known as Madam Hilda, Madam Hilda is the only member of the team still playing for the club after 28 years and he looks forward to each new season with the eagerness and an- ticipation of the newest rookie. While Madam Hilda is the chief clown, the pitcher for the team is Hedda Hooker, a famous high singled, stole a couple of base's and scored on a single by Barry Becker. Steve Dinney and Tim O'Neill shared 'pitching duties for Crediton. school star from Long Beach, Californaa and for slugging power they have Hefty Helen and Dumpy Dora,. Other stars in the Cuties lineup are Chili Pepper, Lotta Fanny, Fifi the Flirt, Main Street Sally, to name a few, From the opening pitch until the final out is made on the diamond., the opposition is bewildered and confused as the Cuties go through their numerous routines.' But, never let it be said they aren't out to win the game. Nothing could be farther from the truth and their over-all record is proof enough, The Cuties have never lost more than 16 games in one season and .that year they won 109 The Exeter opposition for the Cuties was not known at press time but Ron Bogart was busy lining up the most talented players in the area. Cultural memories from Russian trip Page 7 By RON BOGART Moscow is in every sense the capital of an enormous and fast- developing nation, a political, administrative, academic and cultural centre, the capitol of a multi-national country. With traditional hospitality, Moscow is host each day to about a million visitors from all parts of the country as well as from abroad. They come not only on business but for a holiday and to taste the many cultural riches that Moscow has to offer. It is simply amazing how much there is to discover and how delighted one feels by the un- forgettable examples I saw of the art of Russia, There always seems to be a warm welcome in Moscow for the kindly-disposed guest. Ancient and modern ar- chitecture stand side by side throughout the city, even in Red Square, the heart of the city. One striking thing about Russian culture is their great love for monuments which are carved from huge blocks of granite and moulded metals. The monument of Lenin stands in the Kremlin, The Great Kremlin Palace built in 1849 is a beautiful building. This Palace houses the highest organs of power - the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and the Russian Federation. The dome is crowned by the flag of the Soviet Union. The magnificent Palace of Congresses was built in 1961. It is the setting for Party congresses, international conferences and meetings. Inside it is just beautiful, This is where we at- tended the Bolshoi Ballet. Here we saw Natalja Bessmertnov.a, premier ballerina dance parts of Swan Lake, This was an un- forgettable experience to see these dancers perform. This was my first visit to a ballet and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Beside the historic walls of the Kremlin burns an eternal flame in memory of those who fell in the Great Patriotic War of 1941.45 for the sake of freedom and in- dependence. Muscovites and visitors continually pass by with heads bowed in reverence and usually placing a flower nearby. The Central Lenin Mausoleum is a place of pilgrimage for many millions of people from every continent, There was always a line-up to pass by this tomb. The precision changing of the guard at the tomb was just an unbelievable sight, The "goose step" marching soldiers changed the guard just as the clock struck the hour and then stood there motionless until the next change took place. The tomb was 'guarded round the clock. The pride of the Russian people is St. Basil's Cathedral. It has graced Red Square for four centuries. It was built to celebrate the final liberation of the Russian state from Tartar dependency, It expresses the full range of popular imagination in marvellous patterns of form and color , . just a magnificent and beautiful structure. The State Tretyokov Gallery was built at the end of the 19th Century in the typical ancient Russian style. It is a treasure- house of Russian fine art right from ancient to modern times . . just a masterpiece of beauty . . . inside and out. The Moscow Metro was a cultural experience in itself, It was built about 40 years ago, It is, a masterpiece of engineering, design and decoration. There is a vast system of lines (1486 kilometres) connecting all parts of the city. It carries about 5 million passengers a day, The stations are all different and just elaborate. It is also unbelievably clean and well maintained, The Exhibition of Economic " Achievements of the USSR is really a city within a city. Its exhibits relate the achievements of the country since the advent of Soviet Power. At the entrance arch is a huge stainless-steel monument of a worker and Collective Farm Woman which embodies the idea of the en- thusiastic and creative labour of the Soviet people. It stood in 1937 at the Paris International Exhibition and later was transported to its present location. A bit further on was the 100 metre high rocket leaving the earth in an expressive symbol of the new cosmic era. This is a monument to the conquerers of space and was built in 1964. Another very impressive sight was the Ostankino Tower, 1748 feet high .a beautiful piece of engineering. From the Seventh Heaven restaurant atop the tower you can see the whole of Moscow. Only Toronto's CN Tower (1815 feet) is higher. This free-standing tower houses radio and T.V, stations. The visit to the Moscow Symphony was a great ex- perience. The theatre was very large and very old. The seats were quite hard and very straight backed. The music was very soft and most of our group found it very, very relaxing. We left at intermission because it was "too relaxing", and very hot inside. The "Moskva" Swimming pool is the world's largest heated swimmjng pool, We estimated it to be 175 metres in diameter. Within this was an 8-lane 50 metre pool with a diving well at the inside end. The circular pool was divided into 5 segments for age-group swimming. Dressing Ladies compete in golf tourney Helen Burton and Rena MacLean combined to post the lowest score in Wednesday's ladies two ball foursome at the Exeter golf course. The prizes for the longest drive from the first tee went to Anita Cook and Donna Pridham while Lois Snell and Ann Helm required the least number of outs. Low scores on odd holes were turned in by Edythe Boyle and Dorothy Kipfer and the most honest golfers were Edna Busche and Mary Chanyi. rooms surrounded the pool and You could swim into the pool from each dressing, room, This was just a magnificent, unbelievable facility. Another evening we visited the Moscow Circus - the largest and most famous circus in the world, It was a 2" hour show with magnificent performances in, eluding tight-wire aerobatics to animal shows. All the typical circus acts were included, The building itself was very modern - circular in shape and outside walls were all windows. It seated about 8000 people, The highlight of it all was .the finale with two satelites zooming overhead - one CCCP and the other U.S.A. with two persons in each doing aerial acts high over out heads. The lighting arid back- drops were just unbelievable, Moscow is dotted with theatres and cinemas. They are always, full. Muscovites are proud of their culture and support it very well. One Sunday we travelled 60 kilometres out of the city to visit one of the world's few remaining active Monestaries at Zagorsk. This was a bit disappointing to me, Yes, it was a monestary, a very old, ancient and beautiful one. The buildings were very interesting. I expected a monestary to be rather quiet and quite religious, but this was a very com- mercialized tourist attraction. We had to pay to enter all buildings and they were selling all sorts of souvenirs, 'Maps and ice cream - and yet I was refused a picture of one of the monks. This was a very interesting side trip. Many beautiful and huge hotels dot the streets of Moscow, The architecture ranges from typical • Russian to very modern. The Moscow River winds its way through the city. Play golf at Ironwood Two area golf tournaments were staged at the Ironwood course in recent weeks. They were sponsored by Les Pines Hotel and the Exeter Legion, Bill Farquhar fired an 86 to take low gross honours in the Les Pines invitational and Paul Mason was the low net golfer at 72. The high net score was carded by Hans Zeehuisen and Brian Hodgins picked up the high net. The hidden score prize went to Scott Burton, Doug Sweet fired a 74 to lead the Legion golfers in the low gross department. Low net honours went to Walter Romaniuk with an 80. Next in line in low gross and net, respectively were George Glendenning and Stan Frayne. The longest drive was hit by George Wilson. Thursday in the weekly junior competition, Steve Pearce carded an 80 to win low gross and Jeff Fuller was low net with a 74. Following with identical 74's to take the next prizes were Dave Shaw and Roger Belling. The most honest golfer was Henry Walters and Dave Jackson won the hidden score award,
