front of the Bank of Nova Scotia.
The EMHA is also staging a puck
shooting contest throughout the
two-day event,
The merchants, of course, are
again setting up their sidewalk
displays with racks of bargain
items for shoppers.
The street will be closed for the
two days, although traffic will
start running again late Friday
afternoon.
Tractor pull
on Sunday
The smoke will be flying from
the track in front of the Exeter
fairgrounds grandstand Sunday
afternoon as the Exeter
Agriculture Society presents a
tractor pull.
This is the second annual test
for tractors and competition will
get .underway at 1 p.m.
Chairman Bruce Shapton
reports that an extra class has
been added this year bringing the
total of events to nine.
The added class is for tractors
out of the field not weighing in
excess of 6,000 pounds. One
change has been mde in an
existing class. The 20,000 pound
division will be changed to 18,000
pounds.
rtize monies are being in-
creased to $2,000 The amount
offered last year was $1,800.
Shapton reports a number of
inquiries from area persons
interested in entering Sunday's
competition. Further information
is available by calling Bruce or
Dolores Shapton at 235-1027.
The first step for prospective
entrants is to weigh their
machines at the Exeter District
Co-Operative on Brock Street et
the west end of Exeter between
Wellington and Victoria Streets.
After the weighing-in has been
completed entries will be ac-
cepted by Dolores Shapton and
Marion Skinner in a booth at the
back of the granstand at the
fairgrounds.
All farm machinery dealers in
Exeter and area will be supplying
tractors and other machinery to
assist in preparing the track and
pulling back tractors, etc,
The ultimate goal of all en-
trants in the tractor pull is to do a
"full pull" of 300 feet.
Last year 58 entrants competed
in the eight divisions. Exeter fair
board president Jack Stewart
and secretary, Garnet Hicks are
also involved in arranging
Sunday's activities.

ment to the motion, calling for
the town to undertake the work
and charge the ratepayers if the
downspouts are not removed
within 60 days. Both the amend-
ment and motion were approved.
So, ratepayers could be subject
to the fines, as well as having to
pay someone hired by the town to
remove their downspouts.
Wright also reported "real
drain problems" in the
Alexander Street area during the
storm last week when over three
inches of rain fell.
He said the runoff was un-
dermining some of the paved
roads in Riverview Estates
Mobile Home Park and recom-
mended that an engineer be
called in to study the situation
and make a report to council.
This too was approved by
council.
Wright suggested that the
Keller municipal drainwas the
• main problem at the north'end,
Try to save race track
"It's too bad the groups didn't
become vocal then," Councillor
Barb Bell said in reference to the
fact the site had been made
known at public meetings this
spring.
At this point, Councillors Fuller
and Patterson presented a
motion that council accept the
present site plan. However, they
failed to get any support for that
motion,
When the motion was defeated,
Patterson turned to Hicks and
told him to suggest an alternative
• "I have no alternatives," Hicks
replied, "I'm not an expert."
Bruce Shapton then said he
would like to meet with the
SHRCC at the site. "If they can
prove to me there's no other
place, "I'd be satisfied," he
added.
"The obligation is on you to
suggest other alternatives,"
McKinlay replied, noting that the
committee had investigated
seven other sites and had found
them all unacceptable.
Mayor Shaw then suggested
that the groups involved meet
with the SHRCC this Thursday at
7:00 p.m. to view the site and
discuss the matter informally.
He concluded debate by saying
that council were not un-
dermining the work done, nor
were they second-guessing the
committee.
He said the decision was to give
one last opportunity to examine
the situation and see if an
agreement could be reached.
"That should have been done
long ago," Patterson said.
There's going to be something
for everyone in Exeter this
Friday and Saturday,
The South Huron Recreation
Centre committee, the Exeter
and District Heritage Foundation
and the Exeter Minor Hockey
Asiociation are joining forces
with Exeter merchants to
provide entertainment, food and
bargains for area residents.
Even the frogs will have their
day as the "It's Fun to Shop in
Exeter" committee have
scheduled a frog jumping contest
as one of their activities during
the sidewalk sale days.
Other fun contests for area
youngsters include boat races, a
tug of war and a pie eating
contest.
The recreation centre com-
mittee plan several attractions,
including a chicken barbecue
Friday evening, followed by a
talent show. This will be staged
on the Trivitt Memorial Anglican
Church grounds.
Among the entertainers are the
Miller Sisters. The Chapel bites,
Midnite Specials and the Moffat
Sisters, Heather and Melissa.
People are asked to bring their
own lawn chairs for the show.
Saturday morning the Exeter
firemen will stage a pancake and
sausage breakfast with all
proceeds for the centre.
The Heritage Foundation will
be holding their second garage
sale of the year in an effort to
raise funds for the town hall
restoration program.
The Minor Hockey
Association have enlisted the
support of the mothers of their
175 players to stage what may be
Exeter's largest bake sale, The
items will be offered for sale in
POOL STRUCK
Investigation has shown that
the filtration system at the
Exeter and area swimming pool
was knocked out of operation by a
bolt of lightning,
RAP chairman Ruth Durand
advised council of this fact in her
monthly report, Monday.
The pool had been shut down
several days last week due to the
loss of the equipment.
Recreation director Jim
McKinlay said the cost of repairs
would propbably be covered by
insurance.
Mrs. Durand also advised
council that she would be making
an appointment to a special
committee to investigate the
I future of Exeter's old arena
witTihi the next couple of days.
Continued from front page
before then?" Boyle asked.
Shaw said he didn't know what
alternatives were open, but said
he would like to see every
possible consideration given to
maintain the track.
McKinlay said if an alternative
was to be considered, the SHRCC
building committee needed in-
structions from council. He said
they should be told to stop work
until a solution is found, because
the engineering study and
planning was being done on the
basis of the present site.
"We have to know which route
we're going," he said.
Shaw said it wasn't fair to ask
council to make the decision
where the facility would go
because they would be deciding
out of ignorance.
"We're not a fit court of last
appeal, because we would have to
rule from our hearts, not our
minds," he added.
However, Boyle said the
decision was up to council. "We
only have to make the decision,"
he argued.
Councillor Garnet Hicks,
secretary of the fair board, said
the site of the arena would"cramp
our style" and said the "fair can't
help but suffer" with the loss of
the track or the loss of room
taken by the new facility.
Councillor Lossy Fuller said
that moving the new rec centre to
another location in the com-
munity would also hurt the fair as
it would not be in close proximity
to the other grounds and
facilities.
Hicks said the new centre
should be built on the same site as
the present arena, but McKinlay
said this would still result in the
loss of part of the track.
