Mrs. Love and Fayann arranged the party. Wow! That was close. Those were the comments after many of the heats in Friday's soap box derby held on the hill adjacent to the Exeter swimming pool, In fact, three of the races were so close the naked eye could not distinguish a winner and dead heats and a rerun were declared. The hardest working of the persons in attendance were not the contestants but the fathers who acted as mechanics and carried the machines hack up the bill. Hard work paid off for Rev. Glen Wright. The machine which he designed and built for three of his children to operate was in- volved in three dead heats and ran into the curb on at least two occasions, needing extensive repairs. After son Steven spun outIonhis first trip having a bit of steering problems, Rev. Wright used an oil can to free the steering mechanism and Steven wound up as the grand champion. Another busy father was John Stephens, who had two sons operating the same machine in the 11 years and over division. Sure enough, the two Stephens boys ended up in the finals and officials were forced to use the time method to determine a winner. This method wasn't completely foolproof either as they compiled identical times in one of the heats. The lowest overall time for three runs was used and Mark Stephens edged brother John for the championship. In the boys championship final Mark Stephens won the first heat, the second ended in a dead heat. and then Stephen Wright bounced back with two successive vic- tories, both with less than a foot to spare to take the big trophy. In the girls under 10 section, Lisa Wright was the champion and she went on to take the *- overall title with a win over 11 years and over winner Catherine Raymond. ' In the early heats of the boys 10 and under machines operated by Dennis Meikle and Greg O'Toole ended in dead heats on two oc- casions and O'Toole won by a whisker on a third attempt. The boys 10 and under division final saw Stephen Wright and last year's winner Jens Gregson matched up. Both came to the double elimination final un- defeated and Wright won too straight.
