The Exeter Royals enjoyed a
very successful week in the
Southwestern Fastball
Association with foor straight
victories.
Two of the wins came over the
strong Nairn club by scores of 2.0
and 3-0 The Royals. also downed
Sylvan 9-4 and clobbered Parkhill
13-1.
The Royals will be in Lieury
tonight, Thursday and Sunday
they will he back at Exeter
Community Park at 9 p.m. when
AiIse Craig will supply the op-
position.
Royals 2 Nairn 0
Tuesday night the Exeter
Royals travelled to Nairn and
eked out a 2-0 win. The Royals
opened the scoring in the top of
the second as Scott Burton
doubled and Joe O'Rourke
singled him home.
The Royals added to their total
in the top of the seventh as Terry
Bourne doubled and scored as
Scott Burton's pop fly was
dropped.
They managed only four hits
off the offerings of Nairn hurler
Ernie Schlegel who took the loss.
Brian Hodgins pitched a strong
game for Exeter allowing only
Three jitneys
for bowlers
Gertrude Hamilton, Beryl
Elgie and Clarence Down were
the top finishers in the three
jitneys staged this week at the
Exeter lawn bowling greens.
Mrs. Hamilton won the
Thursday night event with two
wins a plus of 14 and aggregate of
27, while Leone Brock placed
second.
Saturday night, Beryl Elgie
took the honors with two wins a
.plus of 16 and aggregate of 26,
followed closely by Jim Orr in
second and Stan Mitchell in third.
Following the three leaders were
Leone Brock, Len McKnight,
Alvin Pym and Clarence Down.
Down came up with Tuesday's
top honors with two wins a plus of
18 and aggregate of 34. Lillian
Pym duplicated the wins and
aggregate but was one behind in
the total slot.
Placing in order behind those
two were Wilfred Shapton, Kaye
Snelgrove, Hub and Ruth
Willoughby, Ray Smith, Ina
Skinner, Mabel Skinner,
Lawrence Wein and Leone l3reck.

Sunday night Nairn visited
Exeter and suffered a 3.0 setback
The Royals opened the scoring in
the bottom of the first as Doug.
Pearson doubled and was driven
home by Terry Bourne's hard
ground ball.
The Royals added to their total
in the bottom of the fourth as they
struck for two runs on four hits.
With two out, Pete Glover, Paul
McKnight and Barry Baynham
singled to load the bases and Jack
Glover's single drove in two runs,
Gord Mauer was superlative on
the mound for the Royals as he
allowed only six scattered hits
and only one run to reach third.
The top hitters for Exeter were
Jack Glover, Pete Glover and
Barry Baynham with two hits
apiece.
Royals 9 Sylvan 4*
The Royals bats were booming
again Thursday night as they
pounded out 12 hits for nine runs,
Terry Bourne led all the hitters
with a triple and two singles
while Barry Baynham reached
all four times and Joe O'Rourke
had two singles..
Brian Hodgins pitched for the
Royals striking out seven and
allowing four hits. Don O'Neill
started for Sylvan giving way to
Bruce McLellan in the sixth.
Royals 13 Parkhill 1
Tuesday night the Exeter
Royals travelled to Parkhill and
doubled the home team 13-1.
The Royals had 19 hits in the
game. They took the lead in the
top of the second as Gord Mauer
and Dennis Bierling reached on
errors and came around to score
as Paul McKnight singled to left
field.
Doug Pearson was the leading
hitter for the Royals as he went
five for five with two doubles and
three singles. Gord Mauer, Barry
Baynham and Bill Farquhar
added three hits apiece.
Gord Mauer pitched a strong
game for the Royals as he
allowed Parkhill only four hits.
Mike Steeper and Don Appleby
toiled on the mound for Parkhill.
Girl leads
soccer win
Marj Ritchie left Bayfield last
TuesdaY With..several honours in
Exeter Fords 12-0 win over
Ba yfield.
Marj is the first girl on an
Exeter minor soccer team to
have scored a goal in Huron
Minor play. ,
This and two other near misses
led to Marj being named player
of the game by the entire Exeter
team.
Doug Hoffman returned to his
old form scoring two goals, one
directly from a corner kick
which, in soccer, is an unusual
achievement.
This now leaves Hoffman with
11 goals in eight games. Doug is
also player for the month of June.
Other two goal scorers are Phil
De Haan, Jack Smits, Henry
Winters and Chris Mittelholtz,
Jeff Fuller rounded off the
scoring with one goal, his first of
the season.
Doug Brooks, the Ford's goalie.
recorded his third shut out of the
season with aid from his backs,
especially Murray Heywood.
The Fords next game will be
against Goderich girls in
Goderich, and Marj Ritchie will
be captain of the Exeter team,
Tigers
The Dashwood Tigers scored
two victories this week in the
Huron-Perth intermediate
baseball league,
Wednesday, the Tigers downed
Hanover by a score of 6.1 and
Tuesday night they outscored the
Zurich Mets 12-5,
The Tigers were in Thorndale
last night Wednesday for an
exhibition contest and Tuesday
night they will travel to Listowel
for a regularly scheduled contest.
A seven run outburst in the
bottom of the fourth inning
allowed the Tigers to sew up
Tuesday's 12-5 win over Zurich.
Zurich had scored single runs
in each of the first and third in-
nings to take a temporary lead.
In the Zurich first Rick Schilbe
was hit by a pitch, stole second
and came around to score on
Kevin McKinnon's single.
In the third, Pat Bedard
singled, moved up on a balk and
home on a single from the bat of
Gerard Charrette.
Five singles powered the
Tiger rally in the fifth. They
came from Bill Schade, Jim
Guenther, Brad Gregus, Jim
Dietrich and Dave Parsons.
Zurich bounced back with
another single run in the fifth on
singles delivered by Rick Schilbe
and Gerard Charrette.
In the Dashwood fifth, Brad
Gregus singled and Jim Hoffman
cleaned things up with a blast
over the left field fence.
The final two Met markers
came in the seventh and came as
the result of a walk to Pat
Bedard, Gerard Charrette's
double and a. single from Steve
Bedottr.
Glen Thurman, Bill Schade and
Rob Dickey singled to send the
final three Dashwood scores

When the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
open their 1976-77 Ontario Hockey
Association Senior Continental
Season in the NI Don Urbshott
will be behind the bench in the
dual capacity as manager-coach,
Jets club president Harry
Loyens announced this week that
his team would have a non-
playing coach for the fir,st time
since its inception five years ago.
Urbshott will be assisted by two
former playing members of the
team Pete Loveless and Bill
Bourne.
Loyens said the new executive
which he heads felt the team
could be better handled by a man
without the added burden of
actually performing on the ice.
Urbshott agreed, saying, "The
players told me last year they
would rather have a non-playing
coach." He was quick to add that
he was not critical of the job
turned in by last year's coach
Steve DeGurse.
He continued, "DeGurse can
certainly come and play with us.
I like him as a person and he did a
pretty good job of coaching as far
as I'm concerned,"
Jack Nairn was playing coach
of the Jets the first three years
they were in the Senior Con-
tinental league. He is now the
coach of the Stratford Junior "B"
Cullitons
Urbshott said combining
playing and coaching has become
too big a job for one person. He
continued, "I think it's just too
difficult for a playing coach to
handle. He can't see everything

when he is on the ice and when he
comes to the bench he should
rest,"
The new manager-coach will be
meeting with his assistants Pete
Loveless and Bill Bourne to
outline duties. Urhshott will
likely be behind the bench.-
Loveless told the T-A, "With
three coaches available for
practice sessions it will give us a
better chance to specialize on
various aspects of the game.
Loveless played high school
and minor hockey in London
before going to Goderich to play
Junior "B" and to the Hamilton
Red Wings of the OHA Junior
"A" loop.
After junior, Loveless had a
tryout with the Detroit Red Wings
before completing the 1965-66
season with the Johnstown Jets of
the old Eastern league.
The following season he was

released by Detroit and then sent
by the Pittsburg Penguins to the
,Greensboro Generals.
He quit hockey for five years
before joining the 'Axon-Merton.
Jets in 1972 when the club was
still in the intermediate category,
He retired for good at the end. .of
. the 1974-75 season.
Till Bourne at the age of 27 has
had a very successful hockey
career He played minor hockey
in Strathroy Land moved to Exeter
at the age of 14 and played rnitmr,
hockey here,
Bourne was .a valuable
defenceman for four years with
the Exeter Hawks junior club..
He then played one year with
St. Thomas in the tier two Joie
"A" and three years with the 1,4
Jets, Work commitments balm
prevented him from playing the
past two seasons.
