Minor teams lose
two of three games
the only goal of ale period.
Mark Crawford gave Goderich
a 2.0 lead with his first of two
goals in the game just before the
two minute mark of the second.
John Kernick put, Exeter back in
the game briefly, when he seared
an unassisted goal at 4:16. Daryl
Madge put the game out of reach
for Goderich, on an unassisted
goal with only 9 seconds left in the
sec3nd period.
Dave Gallow and Crawford
rounded out the scoring in the
third period to give Goderich
their four goal. margin.
Goderich took three of the flour
minor penalties called, but
neither team could take ad-
vantage of the power play
situations.

It's Sunday night, and all across Canada the Waltons is
pre-empted for another hockey game. Ralph, a die-hard
hockey fan in Agincourt, and his somewhat glassy eyed wife
Carol settle down in their tacky recreation room decorated
in nouveau stale idea and switch on the slightly ahead of its
time colour television to watch the New York Rangers take
on the Central Red Army team.
The Central Red Army team are from Russia. a coun-
try that neither Carol or Ralph have seen and know little
about. They know that it is cold, being at approximately the
same latitudinal proximity as Canada; they know that there
is another alphabet used for their language and they know
that they differ in political ideologies although neither is ex-
actly sure how. They also know that they have damn good
hockey teams: maybe the best in the world.
"Not as good as us, not when we are in top shape and
are playing with a single cohesive team" pontificates Ralph
to carol's already deaf ears. (Carol has been inundated
with hockey lore and facts since she met Ralph 22 years
ago, and, quite frankly, could carp less about the game.)
"No, just wait and see" continues Ralph as he licks the last
bit of chicken from his fingers, just like the ad says and
proceeds to bite his nails down to the cuticles because they
now taste like 11 different herbs and spices.
The announcer, who could make the Hindenberg dis-
aster sound boring, has finished his speech about the past•
two series against the Ruskies and Howie Meeker, who
could make Hamlet sound puerile, has his blood pressure
return to normal as they switch upstairs to the gondola.
Ralph's pulse rate increases dramatically as the national
anthems and customary gift giving concludes, The puck is
dropped, play starts and 21 seconds after the opening Phil
Esposito feeds Steve Vickers and the Rangers are ahead 1-
0. Ralph woops and grabs for another piece of chicken,
Carol snores her approval.
If hockey games lasted 30 seconds, the Rangers would
have won.
Unfortunately hockey games last for one hour, and in
the ensuing 19 minutes and 39 seconds, the New York
Rangers were humiliated by a team that made them look
like the rather untidy bunch of athletes that they are.
As the game progressed towards the end, the Red Army
team skated the Rangers into the ice. It was the first game
of what is billed as Super Series 76, the next one to be called
Extra Super Series, the following one to be called There
Will Never Be a Better Series than This and the last one to
be called Sorry Folks, Bet You Didn't Think We Could Do It,
The Best Series Forever or Until The Next One Series.
Hopefully we will be bored to tears as we race along trying
to prove that we are better then those borscht breathed,
vodka drinking Russians who only think they can play
hockey, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
What we have here is what everyone has wanted . . .
supposedly. NHL teams playing Russians in the middle of
our season, on our rinks, under NHL rules. Most people
thought that the Rangers, even though they are a disgusting
excuse for an ice hockey team, would womp the Reds, We
now know different,
There is no point in making conjecture on who will win
vilit4-garile. The Sabers and Islanders should win against
the''Wings, a much weaker club than the Red Army. And the
other three opponents of the Red Army should take their
games, that's the way a lot of others see it too.
Montreal in particular had better take their game or
the NHL should roll itself into a ball and die a slow death
from terminal embarrassment. Montreal is the team in the
Not just great for one or two years, not just having
the best for one or two years, but running together a chain,
a string of victories that is astounding. No other team, not
even the Leafs, have as much tradition or are as rich in
prestige. If the Canadiens, the penultimate team in the
NHL, lose, it will be the only slap in the face to Canada.
Honestly, if Philadelphia bombs and the Sabers choke and
the Bruins flounder who cares? Who really cares?
Yes, folks its true. If our teams, and we should use the
term "our" with a grimace as they are no more our's than
Grant's tomb, lose the rest of the world will not sneer at us.
They will not say that Canada is like a Volkswagen com-
pared to the Maseratti Russians, No one will stop trading
with us; our economy will not become sicker (if that is at
all possible,) and yes. Canadians will still be able to travel
to other lands and hold their heads up. Amazing facts, but
they are all true. Nobody else cares and really I wonder
why we place so much emphasis on this.
Consider this point. A new ambassador from the United
States has just arrived in Ottawa. The old one left as they
are want to do when a new one comes*. Just before he left,
he made some rather strong comments the gist of which
were: stop mucking around up here, We. meaning
Washington, are rather upset at the fact that you are fooling
around with a nationalistic oil policy. That you have a
desire for economic sovereignty, in short, Gerry. Henry
and the others in the US don't like the looks of things up
here. What he said, in the proverbial nutshell is, don't do
anything we don't want you to because we figure on using
you to help us and this free thinking is no good,
What was the reaction of the country? Generally we took
it in a rather docile manner.. But if it comes down to our
hockey teams being beaten that is another matter,
22 million people can get more upset about the
travellings of a piece of galvanized rubber then the innuen-
does made by another country about the way our govern-
ment functions. That is a sad situation.4
Personally, I would like to see the end of these so-called
super series. Forget the competition and rivalry, pack it all
in and send them back home with Howie Meeker stamps
and Brian McFarlane trading cards. They prove nothing,
except one thing.
The Russians are as good or better then Canada at
Hockey, Nobody believes me when I say this. I fear for my
life sometimes when I utter that one phrase. I think I'd be
better off calling Hitler an okay guy than trying out that
fact on a Canadian, but lets face facts.
For years these athletes have trained and you can't tell
me that because they pass the puck around like machines
there is something wrong. Any team, if they did the exer-
cises and workouts the RtisSians do would look like
machines. They are unquestionably one of the finest groups
of players assembled and they deserve a lot of eredit. There
are only two or three NHL teams and surely no WHA teams.
that come close or surpass the Russians, a fact that we
should not be ashamed of.
If Canada were as bullish on their sovereignty and the
economy as they are on their hockey teams we would be
a lot better off.Think about that next time Khatlarrlov splits

Juvenile
The Juvenile team won a
penalty filled contest against
Lambeth, defeating the visitors
3-2. Lambeth took only five of the
twenty penalties called in the
contest.
Lambeth opened the scoring in
the first with just over three
minutes gone.
Steve Knight came back to tie it
for Exeter in the second before
Lambeth again went ahead. D,
Osgood tied the game and Wayne
Clarke put it away for Exeter in
the third.
Pee Wee
Jeff King led Dorchester to a 4-
2 pre-Christmas victory over the
Pee Wee team from Exeter in a
game that was played in Dor-
chester December 23.
Trevor Boyle opened the
scoring for Exeter with an
unassisted goal at 4:37 of the first
period. The lead was short lived
however, as King came back with
a reply less than two minutes
later.
Ron Coolman put Exeter out
ahead again when he took a pass
from Mark Vandergunst to make
it 2-1. Dorchester's Dave Parker
tied the game again on a goal
with less than 30 seconds to play
in the period.
It was the third frame that sank
Exeter, as Dorchester came up
with two goals that Exeter failed
to reply to. Dave Paicment
scored the eventual winner when
he converted a pass from King
into a goal and Tom Brady added
the insurance with a little over
two minutes left in the game.
Exeter took three of the five
penalties called in the game.
The Exeter Waxers came as
close as you can get in the Novice
Hockey Tournament this past
weekend, as they lost in the "C"
category finals to Lambeth 3-2.
The tournament was held at the
arena this past Friday, Saturday
and Sunday.
Exeter easily rolled over their
opponents in the three games
leading to the finals, dumping
Lambeth 4-0 stinging Tilbury 6-3
and Pt. Edward, 2-1 on Saturday,
Kick Gilfillan earned the
shutout for the Waxers in
Friday's action against Lambeth.
Captain George Pratt scored
an unassisted goal at 1:32 of the
first frame to give Exeter all the
points that they needed to win the
game. He was followed by Sean
Whiteford at 8:03 for the in-
surance marker. Whiteford
converted passes from Brett
Batten and Scott Lovie for his
goal,
The second period was
scoreless until late in the period
when Steve Gould found the mark
behind Lambeth goaltender Greg
Haugen at the 9:16 mark of the
period, It was an unassisted
goal. Lovie got the only goal of
the third period at 3:06 of the final
period, again unassisted.
Lambeth took the only penalty
of the game in the first period
when Referee Brian Campbell
tagged them with a "too many
men on the ice" call. The Waxers
were unable to capitalize on the
power play opportunity,
It didn't take Exeter gong to
find the mark in Saturday's game
against Tilbury as Brett Batten
popped in the first goal after only
19 seconds had elapsed. Batten
was assisted on the goal by Lovie
and Whiteford
Tilbury came back just 26
seconds later when John Nussey
scored to tie the game. Batten put
in his second of the game near the
six minute mark on assists from
Lovie, who had an excellent
game getting two goals and three
assists, and Pratt.
Nussey scored his second and
final goal of the game and sent
the two teams into the second
period with a tie game, two
apiece. With just over a minute
gone, Nussey fed Nick Farough in
front of the Waxers net and
Farough put it away to give
Tilbury the lead.
Then things fell apart for
Tilbury, as Exeter stormed back
with four unanswered goals,
Steve Gould started the onslaught
at 5:59 of the second, making'
good on passes from Lovie and
Pratt to tie the score.
Jeff Pfaff put in the eventual
game winner with 11 seconds left
in the period when Batten found
him near the Tilbury net, Pfaff
made good on his shot and it was
all but over for Tilbury,
Lovie added the-insurance in
the third period when he got his
first of two goals in the period,
and then added the sixth and final
goal of the game with just over a
minute left in the contest,
Tilbury took two of the three
penalties called in the game, but
killed them both off. They were
unable to score on the one power
play opportunity afforded them
by the Waxers.
Exeter managed to eke out a
close victory against Pt. Edward
in a defensive battle that saw all
the scoring come in the early
minutes of the first and third
periods.
Steve Gould opened the scoring
in the game with an unassisted
goal at 2:11 of the first, It was
scoreless until George Pratt
scored early in the third from
Gould and Lovie. Pt. Edward got
on the scoreboard fess than a
minute later when Damian Mills
got their only marker, to round
out the scoring at 2-1 in the
Waxers' favor.
The bubble burst for the
Waxers the next day though, as
they lost the championship round
of their class in overtime to
Lambeth.
Jeff Mickle gave Lambeth the
lead late in the first on an
unassisted goal. Scott Lovie tied
it up in the early goings of the
second period when he found the
mark on a pass from Whiteford at
1;30. Steve Gould put Exeter
ahead at 5:18 of the second and
the game stayed that way until
the early stages of the third
period when Mickle scored again
and tied the game to send it into
overtime.
With just over five minutes
gone in the sudden death period,
it was Mickle again, who found
the open spot in the net and
finished off Exeter's hopes of
taking the championship,
In other action in the tour-
nament, South London won the

Brakes should be checked for
equal pull on all four wheels.
A bad pull is especially
dangerous on ice or other
slippery surfaces.
It's economical to keep your
gas tank as full as possible —
gas evaporates faster, and
moisture condenses, on the in-
side of a near-empty tank.
Do your wheels turn freely?
Binding wheels are caused by
tight or improperly lubricated
wheel bearings and dragging
brakes. It can cost you
mileage.
