They are marked as the team to beat because they are, in theory, the best team in the league. As well as the other teams, which come hunting for points, a championship team is also at the mercy of its fans. Fans are an odd bunch. They retain no objectivity, no fan suffers defeat quietly, if you're on the losing end of the stick, you and your team are schmucks. Particularly when you were the champs, like the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. A lot of people have been complaining about the Jets this year, The usual comments, like they aren't playing like they were last year. That they are scrappy, the passing is haphazard and the other standard criticisms that go with being a fan. What a lot of people are forgetting is that the Jets are not really doing all that badly this year and besides being well in contention, they still can take the championship, come '76. The Jets are currently running with a respectable, if not earth-shattering record, of 10 wins and 8 losses, With a total of 20 points, they are in third place, just one point away from second place Preston Jesters who have a game in hand on the Jets. The Jets biggest problem seems to be consistency, as they can't hold a drive for a long time, After dropping both their games last week, including an important one to the Jesters, the Jets have come on strong again this past week to win all three of their games. What makes the record of the past week a little less stellar is the fact that two of the three wins came against bottom place clubs, last place St. Thomas-Port Stanley and second last place Woodstock. It is not that the Jets can't handle the higher ranked teams, and their record is not established merely on defeats of Woodstock and St. Thomas. They have beaten the first place Durham Huskies, they beat fourth place London Kings last week. The Kings are only one point behind the Jets. It just seems to be a problem of connecting the wins up to the wins, in other words, keeping the fire going between games. There seems to be no particular pattern to the Jet's won lost record this year as they drop games that they should win and walk around teams that logically they should have a hard time with. They seem to be in the same boat as the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. The Leafs can come up with big games against the Canadians, the Flyers or Bruins but they stumble when they meet the St. Louis Blues or the Washington Capitals. But the Jets aren't even that definite. Assuming that the Jets stay in the same spot that they are now, a position that is respectable enough, they still should take the championship this year. Remember that when the playoffs come around. * * * * * The annual Sportsmans dinner put on by the Lions Club is rolling around again and the list of participants and speakers is impressive. The dinner is held annually at the Legion and the proceeds go to help crippled children. It is not, however, yday usual affair and the list of speakers that the Lions are tr g to set up pdints‘that f get out . - Willie Horton, designated hitter for the Detroit Tigers heads up the list. Horton was voted best designated hitter in the American League last year. No mean feat, con- sidering the rather unim- pressive record of the Tigers this past year. Steve Rogers, pitcher for the Montreal Expos will round out the baseball con- tingent at the dinner. Mon- treal will also be represented by the man with the hands, Peter Della Riva of the Alouettes, Della Riva is the primary receiver on the po- tent offensive lineup that led the Als to the Grey Cup game this past year. Hockey will be represented by Tommy Gorman, a former goaltender for the Montreal Canadians back in the early days of hockey. Angela Kondrak, who swam Lake On- tario, Harry Geris, a heavyweight wrestler and Ken Kirten the Jr, Can-Am horse jumping champion will also be pre- sent. The Lions have lined up two perennial favorites along with the above. Whipper Billy Watson will be making his usual appearance and Dave Tuffy Knight, hard-nosed, win- ning coach of the Wilfrid Laurier Football team will be the emcee. So how does one top off this sort of list? There are few names in sport that could diminish the collective interest of the athletes that are confirmed, In fact, there are only about three who one would think of and on top of that list is the Juice. 0, J. Simpson, the rambling back for the Buffalo Bills, actor and maker of commercials is almost definitely signed for the event. Although it would be premature to say that he is definitely coming, the organizers feel that there is a strong chance that the Juice will be coming. The way he travels there should be little difficulty for him to make this and any other engagement he has, Whether or not Simpson can make it, the confirmed list is definitely an impressive and interesting one. Cost of the banquet is $25 a plate, A little steep some may say, but not when you consider the list of speakers and What the money is intended for, The banquet usually raises approximately $,000 for the Lions, It is interesting to watch the officials of the National Baseball League struggle with their cultural identity and fiscal yearnings as the best offers to buy the financially bedridden San Francisco Giants come from north of the 49th parallel, The Venerable gentlemen, meeting in Hollywood, Florida, don't like the thought of sending the Giants north, at least as far north as Toronto, They feel that the Giants would be geographically hurt by the move to Toronto, To me that Sounds like a nice ex- cuse to shuck off the Canadian interests because they feat an influx of Canadian teams into their national pastime. Pony, Clarence Campbell, didn't think that a southerly location like L.A. or Atlanta Would hurt an essentially winter game when he expanded the NHL, Nor did he con- sider the cultural backlash and diminishing identification with hockey that, expansion would have on Canada, After dumping both their games last week, the Lucan- Ilderton Jets stormed back to win all three of their contests in. Continental Senior A action last week, The Jets started the week off by dumping the London Kings 6-4 last Thursday at the London Gardens, The line of Bill Bannerman, Scott Graham and Bill Fairbairn accounted for five of the six goals that went to the Jets, Graham, usually a left winger, moved to center after regular center Bill White picked up a misconduct penalty and double minor. Fairbairn moved up from defence to take over Graham's duties. The Kings took an early 2-0 lead over the Jets, both goals coming on power plays. The Jets got on the scoreboard when Bannerman stole the puck from King's defenceman Marty SH wrestlers take tourney The SHDI-IS wrestling team narrowly edged out Waterloo Collegiate by 4 points to take the seventh Red and Black Wrestling Tournament that they hosted last Saturday. Rick Skinner, wrestling in the 148 pound class was considered to be the most improved wrestler in the match for South Huron. Skinner, a grade 10 student, made it to the final in his class where he met Frank Zeph a grade 13 student from Kitchener. He nearly finished the match without being pinned, doing what Coach Doug Ellison called "an excellent job." 115 pound Mike Westelaken defeated last year's WOSSA champion Dave McCann of Parkhill, to take his class. Westelakeniwoni all four of his matches previous to the final. The score in the final was 2-1. For his efforts, Westelaken took the best wrestler of the meet award for SHDHS. Mark Paton, tipping the scales for the 130 pound class, finished second in his class, losing to Rob Borshell of Banting Regional school in the final. Borshell is the area representative to the Ontario Winter Games for his weight class in wrestling. Other winners in the tour- nament were Richard Rooseboom, who won 2 matches for the 84 pound class, Vince Winters with 1 in the 90 pound class, Bryan Baker with one in the 98 pound class, Merton Brock in the 106 pound division, Perry Sereda with 2 at 123 pounds, Brian Mayer with 2 wins to place him fourth in the 136 pound class, Brian Thompson finishing fourth in the 141 pound class with three wins, Randy Fisher in the 157 pound class, Darrell Preszcator at 178 pounds, John Coolman at 168 pounds,Ron Bilcke taking 2 of 3 in the 194 division and Rick Bilcke finishing third in the unlimited weight category. Ellison called it a "surprising win for a very young team." All the team members won at least one mated to add to the point total.
