TEMPLEMAN STAFFA 4-H members, their mothers and leaders, were guests of the Staffa Women's Institute at their family and consumer affairs meeting, held in the township hall, November 25, Mrs. Charles Douglas, the president, opened the meeting and welcomed the guests with a poem entitled "One Step More", The 4-H girls from Staffa No. 1 club presented a skit entitled `Finishes for Wall Hangings' with Karen Mahon the commentator and all the girls participating, Staffa No, 3 girls had set up an exhibit of their club work entitled `International Flavour in Embroidery° with Sharon Docking commenting. Staffa No. 2 girls presented a skit on 'Enlarging and Tran- sferring Designs' with Bonnie Norris, Jeanna Elliott arid Mrs. Douglas participating, Mrs. Bruce Eaton was guest speaker for the evening, She and her husband arrived home last August after spending two years in Bangladesh. Her talk was most interesting, telling about the health and nutrition problems of the country. Roll Call was answered by naming a beauty hint and Mrs. Johnny Miller presented a paper on the motto: One-third of your food keeps you alive, the other two-thirds keeps your doctor alive. Mrs. Robert McCaughey en- tertained everyone with several piano instrumentals. Mrs. Daynard chose as her out- standing Canadian woman, Louise Lawrence, a naturalist from Northern Ontario. Mrs. George Vivian gave an interesting demonstration on Christmas arrangements and decorations made from things around the house, Hostesses were Mrs. Charles Douglas, Mrs. Norman Harburn and Mrs. Ross McPhail. Personals Bonnie Miller, Toronto and Paul Miller, Guelph spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Clifton Miller. Ernest Dow, Guelph, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Norman Dow. Ernest was valadictorian at the graduation exercises at Mitchell District High School, Saturday evening. Mr. & Mrs. John Templeman and family and Mr. & Mrs. Rob Templeman attended a family gathering Sunday at the Orange. Hall in Mitchell honouring Mr. & Mrs. Wilfrid Annis on their 35th wedding anniversary. Mr. & Mrs. Sam Skinner ac- companied by Mrs. Alma McAllister attended the funeral of their aunt Mrs. Frank King, Tuesday. Shiela Elston (R.N.) who, with 200 members of the Nurses' Association flew to Japan for two week vacation, has returned home to Toronto. her sister Mrs. Nelson Elliott and attended the Happy Gang Christmas Dinner. Mr. & Mrs. Austin Hobbs en- tertained at a family dinner party on Sunday in honor of their daughter and husband Mr. & Mrs. W, Egan, on the occasion of their 30th wedding anniversary. Church news A carol service preceded the morning worship at the United Church. Rev, Mary Mclnally took the text for her sermon from Isaiah chapt 32 v2. . "A Great Rock in a Weary Land." The lighting of the first candle for Advent "Forgiveness" was performed by the minister. Presentation of Sunday School attendance awards were made to the following children. Bronze Pin, Cindy and Dana Hofrichter, Amy Waugh, Anne Harret, Paul Wright and David Knapman. First Pin, Valerie Squire and Julie McColl. The children's story was "A Scandinavian Christmas." Successful Christmas Bazaar A very successful Christmas bazaar was held in the St. Thomas Church Hall on Satur- day. The bazaar was opened by Rev. Mary Mills at 2 p.m. There were quilts, interesting novelties, handwork and home baking displayed for sale and afternoon tea was served. St. Thomas Anglican Church Rev. Mary Mills conducted the 9:30 a.m. service at St. Thomas church and took her sermon from the Gospel of St. Matt. Chapt, 21, it was entitled "The Message of Coming" and dealt with Advent. The lighting of the First Candle in the Advent Wreath which denotes Penitence was performed by Miss Marion Herbert. In the Children's Story, Rev. Mills explained the different colors of the Vestments or Hangings used during the Advent season. Persona Is We are very happy to report that Mrs. Wm, (Mavis) Knapman is home from St. Marys Memorial Hospital where she has been a patient for some time, also Keith Evans who has been recovering from an accident is home from University Hospital, London, We wish them both continued good health. Recent visitors with Mr. & Mrs. Austin Hobbs were, Mrs. Wm. Young and Mrs. Theodore Stephens of St. Marys. SUMMERS GRANTON At Summary Day for the North Middlesex WI short course "Salute to Vegetables" held at the Union Gas Building London, November 25, Granton was well represented and presented a short skit in connection with the course. Those taking part were Mrs. D. Roloson, president and Mrs. N. Riddell who were leaders in the course, Mrs. C. Lewis, Miss M. McNaughton, Mrs. E. Sum- mers, Mrs. M. O'Shea, 4-H Club leader and Mrs. Chas. Gowan, president, of Prospect Hill Institute. The guest speaker was John Gardiner, Extention Hor- ticulturist from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, who with the help of slides, spoke on vegetables, their genetic growth, and the edible and toxic parts not commonly known. A good discussion followed and a salad lunch was enjoyed. Happy Gang At the "Happy Gang" Christmas Dinner held in the United Church basement, N9vember 2.5,52 people sat down at tables replete with favors and Christmas decorations. They were served a sumptuous meal of hot turkey and all the trimmings, a variety of pies, cake, and as an added treat, bowls of homemade candy were placed on the tables. This delicious repast was catered to and served by Unit 3 UCW, Prize winners with lucky numbers under their plates were Mrs. Lottie Jones, Mrs. Elsie Dann and Mrs. Ethel Squire. Mrs. James Kerr presided over a short business meeting. A new president was elected, Mrs. Harold Westman who will take over next year. A donation was voted to the church for the use of the hall. Members having bir- thdays in November and December, and their names on the cake were, Edna Rainey, Elsie Dann, Nora Wissel, Eileen Summers, Arthur Roloson and Elmer Summers. Aid for fire victims The response to an appeal for donations for the Vanderminnen family, recent fire victims has been tremendous. Gifts of food, clothing, furniture, household articles, and money have just poured in. The family are tern- porarily occupying an apartment in the basement at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Harloff. Medway euchre On Monday, November 24, the Medway Euchre Club met at the home of Mr. & Mrs, Austin Hobbs.
