You can't always get what you
want but if you try; sometimes
you get what you need.
That's a time-worn adage but
this week Lucan council would
probably say it rings true
because LIP awarded council not
what it wanted, but what was
judged needed — $9,000 to restore
a storm drain.
Councillor Norman Steeper and
chairman of the planning board,
says Lucan was pleased to be
successful in their first attempt
to secure the special winter
works grant.
But he adds council will change
its original plan on the "Bend"
drain to a "phase system" rather
than doing everything at once.
Originally, council planned to
dredge the entire drain system
within village limits over one
winter at a cost of $27,000. With
funds cut back two-thirds council
still plans to clean the storm
drain, but over three years.
Mr. Steeper says the operation
will be funded through LIP over
that period. "We just hope they
grant us again," he says.
The councillor says the drains
in Lucan haven't been touched in
12 years.
He says the cut-back in funds
may affect the number of men
the village will hire to work the
first phase.
The project was originally
scheduled for November 3, but
now starts December 1 because
LIP wants time to draw up work
contracts.
The first stage of the big flush
is trimming away brush and
debris from drain sites.
By February actual dredging
begins with a backhoe and
dumptruck and continues until
Spring.
