Hawks squeak by Braves The Exeter Hawks came up with a three goal third period to sneak by the Tavistock Braves 4- 3 in Junior hockey action at the arena on Sunday night. The Hawks, led by Captain Brian Taylor with 2 goals, were trailing through the whole game until Tom Hayter popped in the winner at 9:47 of the third period. Tavistock opened the scoring early in the game on a goal by Steve Yantzi. The Hawks tied it up with their first goal of the game when Taylor took a pass fromKenPinderand putit away,at 11:12. The goal came while the Hawks were playing shorthanded with Cam Haist cooling his heels on a roughing call. The second period was scoreless, but chances were provided to the Hawks as the Braves picked up four penalties. Neither team took long to find the mark in the second period with Tavistock getting the first goal at 1:02 of the period. Dick Lupton popped one past Exeter goalie Randy Lovie after taking a pass from Scott Leeming. Exeter tied the game up again on a power play with Gerald Wiedo cashing in on a set up from Matt Muller. Tavistock bounced ahead again on a goal by left winger Dwight Steinmann assisted by Bill Rhoads. • It was up to Taylor, to tie the game less than two minutes later in another power play goal, this time assisted by Wiedo. Just over a minute later Don McKellar fed Hayter the pass that provided him with the winning goal op- portunity. Exeter increased their per- centages against Strathroy when they beat them 9 to 1 on Tuesday night. Dave Cann and Dave Bogart both bad two goals each to head up the Exeter offence, while Brooks, Wayne Parsons Mercer, Atthill and Bell all tallied once. Larry Dawson had three assists on the evening, Exeter outsbot Strathroy 38 to 29, scoring 5 goals in the third period, when they had 21 shots on net. The Strathroy goal came when Exeter let up the defence and got into "sloppy play around the net" Coach R6n ,Bogart said. Bogart is pleased with the effort his is getting fiom the Bantams, but hastened to add that "we still have a lot of work to do." Manager Bob Pooley's midget team hammered their Huron Park opponents 7-3 in hockey action at the arena on Wednesday night. Exeter, led by center Paul Pooley who collected two goals and an assist trailed only once during the entire game. Pooley beat Huron Park net-minder Ray Snell with the eventual game winner at 6:00 of the second period. Paul Van Gerwen assisted on the goal. The match was close, until the third period when Exeter broke open- for three goals, from brothers Paul and Perry Pooley and Randy Parsons. Other Exeter goal scorers were Fraser Boyle, Brad Taylor and Brian Horrell, Dennis Preszcator collected three assists. Bob Stuckless and Mike Cronyn hit for Huron Park in the first period to give them a short-lived lead. Stuckless got a second goal in the middle frame. PEE WEE The Exeter pee wee "A" team came up „,witht , two successive victories in minor hockey action this past week. On November 5, There was no problem scoring goals against the Huron Park team, as Exeter came up with 9 while goalie Rich Fletcher shutout the visitors, Exeter was led by Bill Glover, who collected two goals and an assist in the game. A pair of goals also came from Peter Tuckey, , the team captain. Other Exeter marksmen were Dave Shaw, Dave Bell, Greg Prout, Mike Taylor and Rick Lindenfield, Most of Exeter's scoring came in the third period when they put away four goals but it was all over for Huron Park at 1:13 for the first period when Shaw scored the eventual winner.It was a wild third period in Strathroy on Tuesday as 7 of the game's 8 goals were scored in that period. The problems do not concern themselves with the four existing teams, but rather the two teams that might exist ex- cept for a lack of organization. Jim McKinley, the director of the league, said that there are over 25 men who want to form teams but that "no one wants the responsibility" he said. He feels that there is enough interest to form a fifth team for the league and possibly even a sixth. He is now in the process of trying to organize the other teams and says that those in- terested should "put their,money on the table", meaning paying the $20 application fee—and starting to play. Although the 15 game schedule has already started, the fifth team would receive a by or the 2 new teams would be given a make-up game. Recreation hockey action continues tonight with Les Pines against Newby Tire at 8:00 and the McLean-Passmores against the Ottawas at 9:25.
