SUMMERS Sunday evening following a dessert tea sponsored by the Granton General UCW the "Treble Clefs" a ladies choir from the Sigle0e area entertained with a concert of vocal music. This group is not new to Granton, as they have been guests at the United Church on several occasions, their leader, Mr$, Shirley Knowles, is a relative of Rev. Menially's. Their repertoire consisted of groups of songs, some sacred, some favorites such as selections from "The Sound of Musie" and others in a lighter vein. The numbers were mostly unac- companied. Assisting the choir were gqitarist, Dick Gambriel, organist, Neil Herron, Evan Knowles, reader. On this particular night the Treble Clefs were celebrating their 100th performance. The choir was formed in 1970. Friday, October 24, .Get well wishes are extended to Mrs. William Knapman who is St. Thomas Anglican At the Anglican Church Rev, Mary Mills conducted the morning service, and took as her sermon a lesson on forgiveness and love, following the reading of the lesson the children were asked to come up to the front of the church and the minister explained to them in language that they could understand the meaning of the scripture. In her sermon Rev. Mills said, "In remembering what we know about the Bible, Altar, and the Cross reveals what we are and who we are." A GRANTON AREA QUILTING — Mrs. Jessie Bilyea, 90 years of age was one of the most enthusiastic par- ticipants at an old fashioned quilting bee in the Granton area recently. Mary Menially spoke on Patience - a necessary virtue, In her sum- mation the minister said "If we continue to do our best and don't give up, in the face of misfortune, through patience we find the Greatness of God. Community shower Mrs. David McClary, formally Joan Garrett, was honored with a community shower on Tuesday evening October 23 at Granton United Church. Joan was a former choir member and organist at the church. Mrs. David Elson was responsible for the arrangements, assisted by her mother Mrs. Lloyd Mardlin and sisters Sharon and Fern, Miss Marion Herbert en- tertained with accordion selections during the program, these were a Pokla Medley, Marine Hymn and Merry Widow Waltz. Mrs. Percy Hodgins gave a reading. Assisting the new bride to open her gifts were her sisters Dorothy and Anne Garrett, Joan received many beautiful- gifts for which she thanked everyone, also the ladies who had been responsible for giving her such a lovely shower. Eric Carscadden Town of Exeter Clerk's Office Shipka couple honored 4-H news The 5th meeting of the Granton 4-H club "Les Belle Femmes" was held at the home of Mrs. Micheal O'Shea on Saturday, October 25, 9:30 a.m. The meeting opened with the 4- H pledge, 7 members were present. Mrs. O'Shea had the green book covers ready and showed the girls a picture which was ap- proved for the cover. A discussion followed on the progress of the Club's projects and plans were made for the exhibit for achievement day, and what will need to be done for morning activities on that day. Mrs. Marlene French, co- leader told the members about hair care, using a chart to illustrate normal, oily, dry and damaged hair. Mrs. O'Shea talked about hair styling and the girls determined their face shape and discussed suitable hair styles for each type of face. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. O'Shea at 6:30 p.m. October 30. Enjoy trip' Your correspondent has returned home after a month spent on a marvelous tour of the west. The Rockies with 'their magnificent beauty, the valleys with their waterfalls, rivers, canyons and the lakes with their vivid colour, formed a picture that will always be remembered, At one particular look out point on the Trans Canada Highway there is a sign which reads - Let all who use this Highway look with awe and reverance upon the Majesty of the God given Beauty of these Mountains. However it is good to be home again. Friendly neighbours meet The newly formed "Friendly Neighbours Club" held their meeting on Thursday afternoon, cards, games and shuffleboard were enjoyed topped off with light refreshments and a social time. Mr. & Mrs. Ed Turnbull were pleasantly surprised Thursday evening on the occasion of their thirty-fourth wedding an- niversary, by a party of friends. Those attending were Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Miller, Mr. & Mrs. Lorne Devine, Mrs. Raymond Kading, Mrs. Olive Miller, Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Morenz, and Fred Fisher. Mr. & Mrs. Bill, Jackson, Calgary, Alberta, visited Monday and Tuesday with Mr. & Mrs. H. Morenz and other relatives in this area. A wedding of interest was solemnized Saturday at Grace Bible Chapel, Parkhill, with Rev, John Campbell of Church of God, officiating, when Nancy Louise, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Orville Truemner, Grand Bend, was married to Keith Snyder, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ferman Snyder. Weekend guests with the Snyder family here were Esther Snyder, Chicago; and Mr. & Mrs. Otto Plein, Kitchener, and James' friend, Harry Bowman, St. Jacobs. Visitors during the week with Mr. & Mrs. Ed Turnbull were Mr. & Mrs. Fred Emery, Sudbury and Mrs,.. Stella Cameron Parkhill, Mr. & Mrs. Dick Zielman and family attended the wedding, Saturday, of their nephew and cousin Reinhold Freiter, son of Mr. & Mrs, Erich Freiter, Dash- wood, to Lynda Dougall, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Dougall, Exeter. The wedding took place in Exeter United church, with Rev. Glen Wright, Exeter, and Rev. Henry Winters of Leamington United Mennonite church officiating, Reception followed at the Pineridge Chalet. Mr. & Mrs. H. Morenz, ac- companied by Mrs. Ida Jackson, Don Jackson and Mrs. Ruby Hoggarth, attended the funeral Saturday of their nephew and cousin, Howard Ford, Arthur, who was accidentally killed in a farm tractor accident last Thursday. Sunday dinner guests with the Morenz's were Mr. & Mrs. Ross Corbett, Steve and Jeff of near Hensall. Mr. & Mrs. Murray Reid, visited Sunday in Toronto with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Roy Young, Junior Parkhill Royal Canadian Legion Athletic Award, and Dave McCann proudly accepted the All Ontario Athletic Achievement Award. On Sunday October 26 Kelly Lynn Glavin was christened, The parents, Basil and Marlene Glavin, God-parents, Mr. & Mrs. Pat Glavin, and a host of relatives attended the cermonies. On Sunday Mr, & Mrs. Robert Cuilliviey and family attended a family dinner at the New Berkley Restaurant to honour Mrs. Cuillivier's parents Mr. and Mrs. James Gibbons of Wingham who celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary. very seriously, Dianne Hodgins, Pauline Regan, Monika Rater- man and Heather Trainor, all from our area, received their graduation diplomas. With all these scholarly girls, the boys will have to watch what they say! Another scholar which this area can be very proud of ,is Mary Ann Regan. Besides receiving her honour graduation diploma, she walked away with no less than nine awards symbolizing her vast achievements while at North Middlesex. The General Proficiency Award for year five, a Ministry of Education Ontario Scholar Diploma and award, and an Ontario Scholar Plaque, were just a few of her rewards. Mary Ann is now attending the Fan- shawe School of Nursing in London, and no doubt she will have equal success in this field of study. Dianne Hodgins, who is now attending Centralia College, received the Parkhill-Ailsa Craig Junior Farmers Award, and a Gibbs Brothers Scholarship. Bernadet Rutten, also from the area, received the Student Administration Council's Out- standing Female Athlete Award, an Activities Award, also from the Council, and the Coaches Award, from the N.M,D.H.S, Coaching Staff. Bernadet is now attending Guelph University. In the undergraduate department, Persona Is Mary Van Osh received the school system and the close relationship that must be kept between the parish, home and school, and as well,he gave some insight into the progress being made in adapting of courses to suit various levels of learning capacity. Mr. Easton com- plimented the highly qualified and devoted Mt. Carmel staff. He stressed the necessity of staff unity and of considering all people who help to keep the school functioning properly ae staff members. He added his thanks to Mrs. Marian Sullivan, the school secretary, and Mr. Bill Regier, the custodian, both of whom were heartily thanked 'by Sister Viola and the entire staff earlier in the evening. He also singled out Mr. Greg Flemming and assured the audience that Mr. Flemming, as their representative on the Board of Trustees, was doing an excellent, dedicated job. Mr. Easton ex- pressed an informal invitation to anyone wishing to witness the official opening of the School Board Office, on Wednesday, November 5, at 2:00 p.m. Also on an educational note comes the honouring of several Mt. Carmel area scholars. The graduation exercises for North Middlesex Districh High School were held this past Saturday, and after the ceremonies, it was plain to see that many Mt. Carmel area students take their education This season's first meeting of the Parent Teacher's Association for the Mt. Carmel School was a great success and was well at- tended by about fifty people. The teachers voiced their hopes for a prosperous year for both them and their pupils. They also ex- pressed their intentions to promote individualism and a sense of responsibility in their students, as well as their desire to bring out the personal creativity in each student. It was announced that on this Friday, October 31, at one o'clock, the grade seven class will be presenting an assembly and any parents who Wish to attend are very welcome to do so. Also, Mrs. McQuillan, the school's kindergarten teacher happily announced that the twenty-seven pupils attending kindergarten is the largest number in the schools history. Grades five to eight are also in great enough numbers this year to warrant the separation of these grades into one class of each. The highlight of the meeting was the excellent speech by the guest speaker, Mr. Alexander Easton, who is the Superin- tendent of Curriculum for Huron and Perth counties.
