October 31 marks that special
night when various sizes and
shapes of ghosts, witches, hobos
and "whathaveyous" materialize
to appear briefly on the scene.
The custom for this time of
disguises dates back to the time
of the. Druids who had a great
autumn festival on this particular
date,
It was called, "The Vigil of
Saman" (or Sambain) in honour
of the god of the dead who on this
set night let loose all his spirits
who had occupied the bodies of
animals during the previous
year. Consequently this is the
reason for all the many ghosts,
goblins and witches which appear
out of the dark and knock on your
door each Halloween.
The black cat also has a
marked place in the history of the
eve of the feast of All Saints, or
All Hallows. The Druids held that
cats were sacred. They believed
that cats had at one time been

human beings and had been
changed into black cats because
of their evil deeds.
The "trick or treat" practice is
a survival from the 17th century,
The Irish peasants of that time
went about asking in the name of
St, Columba for treats to fatten
calves and black sheep for a
feast,
In Irish tradition Columba
takes the place of Saman, the old
Lord of the dead of Druid times.
Columba was an Irish priest, sent
to covert the Picts and founded a
monastery on Iona Isle on the
coast of Scotland. Somehow or
other, Saman comes to be con-
fused with Columbia.
Jack O'Lanterns similarly
have an Irish background. They
represent the story of a man who
was ''so completely mean he
wasn't allowed either in Heaven
or Hades, so he is forced to walk
this earth until Judgment Day.
All the Celetic countries have
contributed to the traditions of
Halloween. Apparently this was
the time for prying into the
future. In Wales this weird night
was known as the "Three Sprit
Night", while England it was
called "Nutcrack Night"when
fortunes were told by roasting
nuts.
Bonfires were lit in front of
every house in the Highlands of
Scotland and feasts were given.
After the fires died down each
person added a stone to a circle
surrounding the dying fire. First
thing in the morning the stones
were checked to see if any had
been moved as it meant bad luck
and misfortune was in store for
any whose stone had moved.
During the evening there were
tests to tell whom the young
people would marry in the
coming year. They pulled kale
stalks,sowed hempseed, roasted
nuts and madeother tests of fates
which were supposed to be active
on this night of enchantment.
Most of the superstition has
been lost over the years, but the
fun of temporarily being changed
into a wee ghost or goblin seems
to persist!

Good crowd
for break
By JOY SCHEIFELE
Once again there was a good
turn out of mothers and pre-
school children at the Take-A-
Break meeting held October 21 at
the former Ailsa Craig Public
School.
Mrs, Madeline Reid from
Austih Greenhouses in Parkhill
was the guest speaker. She gave
advice on the care of house plants
and answered many questions
the mothers asked regarding the
subject.
A change in the regular routine
will take place at next month's
meeting. The group will meet on
Wednesday, November 5, rather
than the usual Tuesday morning.
At this time Maxine Tremmer
will give a demonstration on cake
decorating.
Once again everyone is
reminded that new moms, tots
and baby-sitters are most
welcome to attend. Mary Ver-
beek of Ailsa Craig is always
happy to answer any inquiries,
and if necessary, help with
transportation.
Belles were received and
dedicated.
The Nursing Home, located on
