"It's like a miracle!”
Tiny Lillian Dickson, a
missionary in Taiwan, was
commenting on the offering at
Caven Presbyterian Church on
Thursday night when the in-
ternationally known lady spoke to
a capacity crowd,
"I've never had a collection
like that in all my speaking
engagements," said Mrs,
Dickson. And I've never spoken
to such a packed audience."
While Mrs. Dickson, in her
speaking tours across North
America, has spoken to many
larger audiences, she said never
had so many people been packed
into a hall of that size,
Officials from Caven estimated
about 350 attended the.
engagement as numerous chairs
were placed to supplement the
normal seating. - The chairs
getting closer and closer to the
door of the church and as the last
to arrive were seated, only a
matter of inches was left vacant.
The offering, according to
Gwyn Whilsmith of the Exeter
District Christian Women's Club,
was $2,070.20 and additional
pledges were made that will
provide seven scholarships for
children in Taiwan.
In introducing Mrs, Dickson,
Mrs. Whilsmith noted how the
Exeter Christian Women's Club
had attempted to have her Speak
here a year ago_ but found her
itinerary already set. Realizing
how much in demand Mrs.
Dickson was as a Speaker, the
club then put in their request a
year in advance and had been
planning the event ever since.
The story of Lillian Dickson,
known to many as "Typhoon Lii"
was told very graphically in a
film. Mrs. Dickson, through her
organization called The Mustard
Seed Inc., has been responsible
for the founding and operation of
hospitals leprosariums, or-
phanages, maternity hospitals,
schools and a host of other in-
stitutions and activities to Assist
the people of Taiwan.
Her choice of the name "The
Mustard Seed incorporated"
refers to a passage in the New
Testament: "If ye have faith as a
grain of mustard seed, ye shall
say unto this mountain, remove
