Waxers start right
win over St. Marys
The Exeter Waxers started the
minor hockey season off on the
right foot as they white-washed
St. Marys 3-0 in the first game of
the Shamrock league play,
Saturday.
It was the first time in two full
seasons that an Exeter novice
team had beaten a St. Marys
entry and they did it right on the
loser's ice.
After a scoreless first period,
TreVor Johnston abet the Waxers
into a lead in the early minutes of
the second stanza when he
banged in a loose puck after the
St. Marys netminder had blocked
a shot from the stick of Scott
Lovie,
With three minutes left in the
second, Sean Whiteford upped the
count to a 2-0 when he converted a
pass from George Pratt.
The final tally came in the
dying seconds of the game when
Brett Batten shovelled the puck
over the line. Scott Lovie and Tim
Easterbrook picked up assists on
the play.
Exeter netminder Rick
Gilfillan turned in a solid per-
formance to earn the shutout. He
stopped several shots *bleb
appeared to be heading for open
corners.
The local novice entry will
make their home debut this
Saturday when they host Belmont
at 6:00 p.m.

FOR GOOD SPORTS
By ROSS H4Yoh
Opening
night
Friday night is the opening night of what is hoped to be
a very successful season for the Exeter junior Hawks and
the other minor hockey teams in town.
The Hawks under the guidance of manager Fred
Mommersteeg and coach Terry Bourne appear to be off to a
good start. They were able to bring home victories in two of
three exhibition outings and scored a decisive win in the
first game of the regular Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" league Sunday night.
Sunday's victory by an 8-1 score came at the Port
Stanley arena at the expense of the newest team in the
junior loop the Port Stanley Lions.
In his third year as manager of the Hawks Fred
Mommersteeg does a tremendous job in organizing games,
practices, transportation and many other duties which
befall a manager.
On the ice, Terry Bourne uses the same techniques on
the ice with his young charges as he did in his junior days
and in a short stint in the Eastern league in the United
States.
Minor clubs rolling
Actually some of the local minor teams saw their
regular Shamrock league action over the weekend.
A total of eight Exeter teams are entered in the area
Shamrock loop in six categories. Two local clubs are com-
peting in the pee wee and bantam ranks while one team will
perform in each of the atom, novice, midget and juvenile
divisions.
All clubs will play in the same category, so, the two Ex-
eter clubs in pee wee and bantam sections will meet each
other in a round robin schedule.
It looks like a long and enjoyable winter for both
youngsters and local hockey fans.
But the reaction of one mother was, "It sure seems ear-
ly to be thinking of hockey already but after the first game I
will likely be as enthusiastic as ever.
Rec director Jim McKinlay tells us that the ever pop-
ular Exeter and district Recreation hockey league is ready
for another season with six teams likely to go to the starting
gate.
Back from last year's lineup are Usborne township, Les
Pines and Newby Tire. They will be joined by McLean-
Passmore and the Ottawas. A sixth club is expected to be
formed by leftovers from the other five clubs and new
players wishing to participate in the play for fun league.
McKinlay says he hopes the league continues with the
attitude that all players are out to have a good time and get
the exercise they need and stay away from any form of
rough play.
The league schedule will begin Thursday night,
November 6 with three games scheduled each evening
between the hours of 8 and 12 p.m.
Any players wishing to participate in the rec loop are
asked to contact Jim McKinlay at the Exeter rec office at
235-0391.
Other rec programs going
McKinlay reports that everything is in readiness for
another successful season of gymnastic and ballet classes.
At the moment 60 girls have registered to take gym-
nastic under the direction of chief instructor Sheila McMur-
trie and her local assistants Gayle Ecker, Kim Postill and
Debbie Riddell.
The three latter mentioned girls are graduates or
currently part of the gymnastic program at South Huron
District High School and are well versed in gym activities.
The number of ballet registrants at about 30 is down
from a year ago but McKinlay says youngsters still have
time to register any Saturday morning between 9:30 and 10
a.m. and they will be ready to participate in the program.
Providing the instruction is Debbie Kiehl.
Still more leagues
To add to the hockey menu, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets are
back in the battle for supremacy in the Ontario Hockey
Association Continental Senior "A" league with a number
of Exeter players in the fold and the South Huron hockey
lea‘gue is again underway.
In addition to these two leagues the Lucan in-
termediates are entered in a Western Ontario Intermer-
diate "C" league again with some local and area players in
the lineup.
The South Huron intermediate league again has John
Ansley of Dashwood Industries and Grand Bend at the helm
as president.
A few weeks ago we received a letter from Ansley tell-
ing us the league is already to go with five teams in the fold.
They are the Exeter Mohawks, Shipka Colonials, Zurich
Flyers, Centralia College, Parkhill and Thedford.
Ansley said the league objective is to provide
Intermediate "D" quality of hockey at a reasonable cost for
local men over minor hockey age.
He continued, "Last season was one of our best at work-
ing toward our objective and at the same time we had fun
and hope the players and fans also enjoyed it."
South Huron seniors scored
touchdoWns the first three times
they got their hands on the ball
and were never seriously
threatened in scoring the 49-0
shutout,
On the first SH offensive play of
the game, John Van Gerwen
passed to Phil Knight for an 85
yard touchdown and the second
play saw Doug McIsaac go seven
yards for a score after a bad third
down Wingham snap.
The third series of plays again.
Produced a six pointer with Brian
Taylor going 38 yards around the
end into scoring territory. Paul
Brooks added three converts and
a 25 yard field goal to give the
Panthers a 24-0 lead after 15
minutes of play.
According to coach Ron Bogart
"in the second quarter we sort of
stood back and watched but we

In

In the third period, Doug
"Mclsaac chalked up his second
touchdown on a short run and
Phil Knight pulled in a Van
Gerwen pass g9od for 35 yards
and a score.
Paul Brooks was right back
with two converts, kicked an 18
yard field goal and added a 68
yard single on the kickoff after .
Knight's touchdown.
,„ Late in the fourth quarter,
quarterback John Van Gerwen
polished off a good drive with an
11 yard sweep to score and Paul
Brooks converted.
Doug Mclsaac was named the
top offensive player of the game
while Paul Brooks and Larry
Johns shared defensive honours.
Great Reversal
The South Huron juniors came
up with a great reversal of form
from Thursday when they scored
Tuesday's 22-2 victory over
Wingham.
Coach Doug Ellison was forced
to make changes in his backfield
due to injuries to Paul Pooley and
Larry Regier. They were
replaced by Brad Cann and Rick
Skinner and both came up 'with
creditable performances.
Early in the second quarter
Jeff O'Brien galloped '22 yards
off tackle for his first of two
touchdowns during the afternoon.
Perry Pooley passed to Rick
Skinner for the two point convert.
Brad Cann was solely
responsible for the second South
Huron major score. He raced 43
yards to put the ball into scoring
position and went 14 yards the
rest of the way off tackle into the
Wingham end zone. Steve Beer's
convert attempt was successful.
In the fourth period, Jeff
O'Brien got loose again this time
for 33 yards and the third local
touchdown. Steve Beer split the
uprights with his convert.
Wingham came up with two
single points in the dying
moments to avert a shutout.
Leading the Panthers defence
with strong tackling were Mike
Westelaken, Brad Cann. Rick

Brad Cann was named the top
offensive player of the afternoon
and Rick Skinner was best on the
defensive.
South Huron senior coach Ron
Bogart was ecstatic after
Thursday's win over the
Goderich Vikings.
Bogart commented, "I can't
remember since our conference
Was formed in 1961 that any
school has shut-outGoderich in a
senior football game."
He continued, "It was a great
reward for us after last year's
final. Just beating them is
terrific, but shutting them out
and on their own field. Wow."
Bogart was high with praise for
every member of the team, "Any
time you hold Goderich to 67
yards rushing and only two yards
through the air, someone has to
be doing a good job and we did
it," he praised,
John Gould who kept the
Goderich club back in their own
end of the field most of the af-
ternoon with booming punts gave
the Panthers their first point
early in the game when he kicked
50 yards into the end zone and
Ken Pinder was able to drop the
ball carrier for a single point,
Later in the first period, Larry
Johns returned a Goderich punt
to the Vikings 41 yard line and it
took only two plays to score the
first South Huron touchdown of
the game.
Brian Taylor went off tackle for
16 yards and Gord Baird finished
the scoring march with a dazzling
25 yard gallop right up the
middle. Paul Brooks converted
and the Panthers were in front 8-
0.
On a third down play the
Goderich 30 yard line in a punting
situation, Brian Taylor took a
short snap from his blocking
position and went up the middle
on a brilliant bit of running
leaving two Goderich tacklers
wondering what had happened.
Paul Brooks was again suc-
cessful with the convert attempt,
The only scoring in the second
quarter came when John Gould
was able to kick a 25 yard single
against a strong wind.
Also in the second period, Pete

victory over the newest team in
the league, the Port Stanley
Lions. ,
The Hawks open their home
season at the Exeter arena
tomorrow night Friday at 8:30
p.m. when the same Port Stanley
Lions will provide the opposition.
Four unanswered goals in the
first period provided the Hawks
with enough scoring power, to
ensure the opening game win.
Right winger Brian Taylor led
the Hawks in a scoring way with
a three goal peformance. Gerald
Weido was close behind with a
two goal effort.
The game was less than six
minutes old when Wiedo fired the
puck into the Port Stanley net on
a three-way passing effort with
Don,McKellar and Matt Muller,
The second Exeter marker
.came on a power play with Ken
Pinder hitting the markssists

and Rick Grenier.
At the halfway mark of the

frame was confined to goals from
the sticks of Gerald Weido and
Brian Taylor. Weido's scoring
play resulted from passes from
Matt Muller and Don McKellar
while Ken Pinder and Cam Haist
drew assists on Taylor's counter.
At 10.35 of the third period0
