shelves. It's understandable, but
it's also frustrating for some
shoppers.
I notice high counters in banks
and in several shops. Sometimes
I feel like hollering at the clerk,
"You-hoo, I'm down here."
The city shopping malls are
convenient, With several stores
under one roof and on the same
level, shopping is varied yet easy
for everyone, Most department
stores, though, have an upper
floor, Escalators carry the
crtomers from one level to
another, But, if a person can't
step onto an escalator or climb
stairs, how can he or she reach
the top floor?
Of course, most stores provide
elevators as well as escalators.
The next time you enter an
elevator note where the buttons
are located. I'll bet they're high
on the wall.
A few supermarkets erected
metal barriers on the sidewalks
in front of the stores. The ob-
jective was to prevent the
customers taking the shopping
carts out to the parking lot. Many
people left the carts in the middle
of parking spaces; others took
them home and neglected to
return them.
The merchants had a
legitimate complaint, and their

By now, most of you know that
I'm handicapped. Because I have
no arms, I use my feet instead.
I've discovered this world is
designed for average people.
For example, consider the
public telephones. No one can
squeeze a wheelchair into one of
those booths. In the city malls,
the space problem has been
alleviated by the construction of
open stalls. Unfortunately, the
phones are still mounted high on
the partition. People, who are
short or who are in wheelchairs,
can't reach them.
When I see someone of an
average height leaning com-
fortably against the phone with
his elbows propped on the stand, I
fume. If the pay phones were
lowered, they would truly be a
public convenience because more
people could use them.
Steps present a problem for
many people, especially those in
wheelchairs, on crutches or with
canes. Nevertheless public
buildings of old and new ar-
chitecture usually contain at
least one flight of stairs. How
many churches can you count
that don't have steps?
Narrow doorways into stores
are another obstacle. Lack of
space forces many merchants to
display their wares on high
New officers of the Pride of
Huron Rebekah Lodge were
installed on October 15 with Mrs.
Jean Hodgert installed at Noble
Grand and Mrs. Olive Hicks as
Vice-Grand for the coming year.
Mrs. Helen Jory, the retiring
Noble Grand conducted the
business meeting prior to the
installation ceremonies by in-
stalling officer Mrs. Irene
Harnack, D.D.P., and her in-
stalling team from Goderich,
Other officers appointed were
P.N.G. Mrs. Helen Jory,
Recording secretary Mrs. Alice
Bowen, financial secretary Mrs.
Lena Kirkland, treasurer Mrs.
Mavis Atthill, Warden Mrs.
Joyce Morgan, conductor Miss
Margaret Cook, Chaplain Mrs.
Shirley Cooper, musician Mrs.
Lena Willard, colour bearer Mrs.
idea worked. Unfortunately, the
bars also prevented people in
wheelchairs from entering the
stores. The laziness of a few
shoppers inconvenienced all
shoppers - some more than
others.
Everyone appreciates
cleanliness in public washrooms,
Short people also welcome
mirrors, paper towel holders and
light switches that aren't placed
high on the walls.
A few restrooms have one sink
placed thoughtfully lower than
the others. Some sinks have
spring loaded taps that must be
held 'cipeti.`" Occasionally no
stopper is supplied for the drains.
If a person has only one hand with
which to work, how can he or she
hold the tap and wash at the same
time?
This world, tailored for
average people, causes
frustration for those of us who
aren't average. Public con-
veniences serve many people.
But, with a few changes, they
could be useful to even more
members of the public.
