The Exeter Hawks lost their

In Friday's pre-season contest,
the Irish got off to a flying start
with three goals in the first eight

Hawks were never able to
recover from the early deficit.

same period as Matt Muller hit
the Lucan net with a successful
shot. Assists went to Tom Hayter
and Don McKellar.
The third session was 13
minutes and 10 seconds old when
Fred Mommersteeg finalized a
three-way combination with John
Van Gerwen and Tom Hayter,

penalties with 11 going to the
Hawks. Included on the penalty

Toronto Maple Leaf fans have
been criticized for their lack of
keen support by the robust and
excitable fans south of the bor-
der.
Hogtowners have retorted that
they are more knowledgeable of
the game or that the Leafs aren't
much to cheer about.
Be that as it may there is no
excuse for any Canadian to sit on
his laurels while the National
Anthem is being played and little
reason not to join in and sing.
I was present for the New York
game last week and surprisingly
the Leafs were enjoyable. The
fans' performance was
. . . disgusting.

FOR ALL, GOOD SPORTS

Shock
to Leafs
One of the biggest shocks to hit Toronto Maple Leaf
hockey fans this fall was the retirement of Ron Ellis. It's
also a disappointment for many area fans who knew his
father, Randy Ellis when he was a member of the Centralia
RCAF Flyers.
Ellis at the age of 30 came close this fall in being nam-
ed captain of the Leafs for the coming season. He was edg-
ed by Darryl Sittler.
In the Sunday edition of the Toronto Sun, sports editor
George Gross pays sincere compliments to Ellis. He
started out by saying five players are missing from the Leaf
lineup including Dave Keon, Norm Ullman. Eddie Shack,
Ron Ellis and Bill Flett.
The following are remarks made by Gross in his
column:
"Personally, I'll miss most of the dearly departed,
because all contributed to Toronto's hockey tradition, some
more, some less. While most of the changes were expected,
Ellis' retirement was a shock not only to hockey fans but
even to Gardens' management.
I liked Ronnie Ellis not only as a hockey player but also
as an individual with a lot of class. If I had to look for a
hockey player I would want my son to emulate, I wouldn't
have to look past Ronnie Ellis,
That's why I was so sorry to see him retire at the young
age of 30. He could have gone on for some time as a shining
example of how to behave on and off the ice and how to play
not only the game of shinny, but also the game of life.
Ronnie Ellis was one of the most honest hockey players
I ever met. To him every game was like a playoff game. He
tried equally as hard in the 71st game of the season as the
first and regardless whether the Leafs were three goals up
or down.
When things didn't go right for him Ronnie Ellis was a
troubled man. When goals were hard to come by he became
worried and those worries often caused sleepless nights. A
man who had such deep feelings was bound to eye retire-
ment, more than once.
He had four years remaining on a contract that would
have paid him about $500,000 during that span, but money is
not his God. He loves his family, his wife Jan and their two
children, much more than the green stuff and wants to
spend as much time with them as he possibly can.
The Maple Leafs will miss Ronnie Ellis and so will all
hockey fans who came to appreciate the honest
workmanship of this dedicated player."
We would like to echo the comments of George Gross.
Ellis was a dedicated, hard working and honest performer
with the Leafs and he will be sorely missed in many ways.
Help for Tigers
The Detroit Tigers are taking some immediate steps to
improve their club for the 1976 American league baseball
season.
Their fleet footed outfielder Ron LeFlore is being sent
to a winter league in Puerto Rico in an attempt to improve
his hitting. LeFlore who is the speediest Tiger on the base
paths since the days of Ty Cobb had trouble getting on base
during the just concluded season. In fact, his biggest
bugaboo was in striking out.
LeFlore struck out 129 times in 1975, only two short of
the team record set a few years ago by second baseman
Jake Wood.
Former Tiger batting great Harvey Kuenn will be
LeFlore's hitting instructor throughout the winter months
and this should bring about great improvements.
LeFlore has shown great speed in stealing bases but it's
difficult to steal first base.
Wins 200 races again
Friday night at the Mohawk Raceway at Campbellville,
Goderich native Ron Feagan won his 200th harness race of
the season. It marks the seventh time in his brilliant driving
career that Feagan has made the winners circle on 200 oc-
casions in one season.
Ten years ago Feagan became the first Canadian and
only the fifth harness horse driver in the world to win 200
races in a single season.
In 1972 for the fifth time in his career, he went over the
200 win mark. But this time he accomplished the feat on the
Golden Horseshoe circuit alone with 217 victories out of a
North American total of 229.
The 200 mark eluded Feagan in the 1973 season when he
picked up 196 wins but last year he surpassed the 200
plateau by two, the sixth time he passed the magic number.
Last year Feagan became the first driver in Ontario to
drive horses from his stable past the $500,000 mark in purse
monies for a single season.
Only the year before his total 'season's earnings in-
cluding visits to other Canadian and United States tracks
amounted to $546,700 in purses.
This year his drives on the Ontario circuit which in-
cludes Garden City, Greenwood and Mohawk have grossed
over $590,000 and with more than six weeks remaining in the
racing season, he should get close to the $700,000 mark.
While on the subject of racing we should mention
another good performance this summer at the Sudbury
racetrack by Crediton driver Jim Wallace.
Wallace who won driving honours at the northern track
a year ago placed second this summer with 34 victories and
an overall average of .444. This record was accomplished in
less than two months at the Sudbury oval.
A Western Ontario honour
It was nice to hear this week that Glenn Weir of the
Montreal Alouettes has been named as one of the nominees
for a Schenley award.
Weir who has been a valuable member of the Montreal
club since being traded from Hamilton a few years ago was
a popular visitor at the Exeter Lions Club Sportsmen's
dinner for the last two years,
In response to the nomination Weir said he was pleased
to be named but felt he had little chance for the defensive
honours because of the presence of fellows like Bill Baker
of British Columbia Lions and Jim Corrigal of' the Toronto
Argos.
Weir added that he was more concerned about his club
winning their next two games in the CFL schedule,

Defer decision
on Greys win
Exeter councillor Ted Wright
asked council this week to con-
sider some recognition for the
Exeter Greys softball team,
which recently won the area
women's league title.
He said the members of the
team feel badly they have never
been recognized by the town for
their achievements and he said
they were even considering
dropping the Exeter from their
team name,
Reeve Derry Boyle said a move
is underway to provide shields to
honor local teams and individuals
and noted that council has not as
yet honored last year's Ontario
champion bantam hockey team.
Recreation director Jim
McKinlay said some com-
munities stage banquets for
sports achievement recognition.
He also noted thatwhile the Greys
won their league title, it was
equivalent to a local hockey team
winning their Shamrock league
and to bestow special recognition
for this could be costly in view of
the number of times it could
'occur.
The matter of the ball team
was turned over to the finance
committee for deliberation.
