The Ontario Hockey Association Continental. Senior A
season which opened this week is expected to provide an ex-
cellent brand of hockey for Western Ontario fans.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets see their first regular action
Friday night at 8.30 when they play host to the Woodstock
Royals.
The Jets playing this year under a new coach won their
first exhibition contest by a close 3-2 score over the same
Woodstock team.
Steve De Gurse with senior experience plus some time
in Holland has taken over the playing coach duties from
Jack Nairn who has moved on to the Stratford Junior "B"
club.
The Jets with most of their regulars back from last
year when they won the Continental championship have
added a few more top notch performers.
These include Randy Roth, Bill Bannerman and Scott
Graham. A story in the London Free Press a few weeks ago
suggested that the London Kings with a couple of ex-
professionals could be too strong for the rest of the league.
We are quite sure those fears will never become a reali-
ty. In a pre-season game the London club lost to New Ham-
burg. It appears that all teams have strengthened including
the Woodstock Royals who were sort of the door mat for the
rest of the league last year. The Royals are led this year by
playing coach Barry Boughner.
Hawks look impressive
The fortunes of the Exeter junior Hawks could also take
a turn for the better this year if their showing in practices
and an exhibition game against Lucan are any indication.
Manager Fred Mommersteeg is doing his usual capable
job of getting the club organized and coach Terry Bourne
will be using his vast knowledge to get the most out of
players on the ice.

In an exhibition game Tuesday
afternoon, the South Huron
juniors had little trouble in
posting ' a 48-12 victory over
Strathroy.
The Panthers jumped into a 13-
0 lead after the first quarter and
were never seriously threatened
thereafter.
Perry Pooley started the
scoring on a 35 yard sweep for a
touchdown which Steve Beer
converted and Paul Pooley
scored a major from five yards
out.
In the second period Brad Cann
went 15 yards on a reverse for a
score and two points were added
on the convert when Perry
Pooley passed successfully to
Brian Mercer.
In the third quarter Strathroy
scored two touchdowns and Paul
Pooley notched his second score
in the gamefor the Panthers from
one yard out and Paul Van
Gerwen hit Brian Mercer with a
two point convert pass.
The final quarter saw Rick
Skinner romp 40 yards for a
major and Perry Pooley plunged
into pay dirt from one yard out.
The first touchdown was con-
verted by Steve Beer.
Brad Taylor led the Panthers
on the defensive with 10 key
tackles and he was named best on

member of the South Huron team
was Jeff O'Brien.

The South Huron District High
School junior Panthers won their
fourth straight Huron-Perth
Conference contest Thursday but
the senior winning streak came to
an end at three games.
Playing a doubleheader in
Clinton, Thursday, the local
juniors had little trouble romping
to a 40-0 victory. It was a dif-
ferent story in the senior contest
as a fired-up Central Huron team
came up with a solid team effort
in downing South Huron 22-9.
Both South Huron teams have
this week off as far as regular H-
P league games are concerned.
They will be back in action on
Thursday, October 23 when they
travel to Goderich to meet the
Vikings,
After the game SH senior coach
Ron Bogart commented "We are
not making any excuses because
Clinton deserved to win. They
just made no mistakes and we
had no breaks, luck or
whatever."
After a scoreless first quarter
Clinton moved ahead with two
quick touchdowns in the next
period. Three points were added
on the two converts and they
were in front 15-0.
A Clinton threat in the first
period was thwarted when Larry
Johns came up with a pass in-
terception for South Huron.
The Panthers put on their best
offensive drive of the afternoon
the second time they got their
hands on the ball in the third
quarter but were unable to score.
Inthelourth period Clinton gave
up two points on a safety touch to
retain possession of the ball. -

Midway through the final
quarter South Huron quarterback
John Van Gerwen hit Gord Bairs
with a successful pass on the
Clinton 35 yard line and Baird
was able to outdistance two
defenders and make his way into
the end zone.
Steve Knight's convert boot
was successful and the Panthers
had nine points on the board.
Brian Taylor was the top
Panther on the offensive with 76
yards in 15 carries while Doug
Mclsaac gained 47 yards on eight
attempts at the line.
The Panthers gained 119
yards through the air on six
completions. Gord Baird hauled
in passes for 35 and 45 yards and
the next longest successful aerial
was 20 yards to Phil Knight.
Larry Johns who led the South
Huron defenders with eight key
tackles was named the top
defensive player of the day while
Gord Baird took honours in the
offensive department.
The South Huron Panthers
wasted little time in getting on
the scoreboard in the junior
game. On the third play of the
contest quarterback Perry
Pooley ran 35 yards on a sweep
around the end.
The next time the locals took
possession, Paul Pooley galloped
60 yards on an off tackle play and
the score was quickly 12-0.
Early in the second quarter a
South Huron scoring threat_ was
slowed down when a pass was
intercepted near the Clinton goal
line. Clinton failed to move the
ball and were forced to punt. Paul

The fourth Panther touchdown
was set up on a 35 yard pass from
Perry Pooley to Brian Mercer.
Jeff O'Brien went the rest of the
way, nine yards on a sweep.
Late in the first half Paul
Gaiser intercepted a Clinton pass
to slow down the opposing scoring
threat.
In the third quarter, coach
Doug Ellison sent in his reserve
offensive unit and they moved the
ball well and scored in seven
plays. Brad Cann rambled 32'
yards for the major score and two
convert points came as Paul Van
Gerwen threw a pass to Dave
Bogart.
The same offensive team led by
quarterback Paul Van Gerwen
again moved ahead in the fourth
quarter. A Van Gerwen pass was
intercepted to stop the scoring
attack.
In the dying moments of the
game Paul Pooley returned a
punt to the Clinton 22 yard line
and a couple of plays later
brother Perry ran the ball in for
the final SH touchdown. Perry
Pooley passed to Larry Regier
for another two point convert.
Brad Cann was the biggest
ground gainer for the Panthers
with 100 yards in 10 attempts.
Paul and Perry Pooley were
close behind with 95 and 94 yards,
respectively.
Perry Pooley and Paul Van
Gerwen each completed two
passes. South Huron picked up a
total of 444 yards compared to 93
by their opposition.

. Iron men
In sports throughout the years there have been a lot of
iron men in various categories and many were not big men
as far as physical size was concerned.
One of the most valuable members of the 1975 Boston
Red Sox is that type of person. He is 31 year-old Denny
Doyle and stands only five nine inches and weighs in at 165
pounds.
Doyle who has been best known as a dirty uniform se-
cond baseman has been kicking around the minors and ma-
jors for more than 10 years.
We are sure Boston manager Darrell Johnson considers
the number 13 to be one of his luckiest. He acquired Doyle
on Friday, June 13 from the California Angels and he
wasted little time in proving his worth.
Doyle's claim to fame this year came when he went 22
straight games with at least one hit in every contest. From
July, 12 to August 5 he hit in all 22 games he came to the
Pl4g•
"Dining his, batting streak Doyle was asked if he was try-
ing to equal Joe Dimaggio's all-time record of 56 games and
he replied, "No, I don't think so. I doubt if Dimaggio would
be too worried if he came down to the batting cage and saw
this little guy chocking up on the bat."
Doyle is the kind of fellow who is valuable to any ball
team. He does everything asked by manager Johnson and
being in the second spot in the batting order is often asked
to give himself up with a sacrifice bunt or move the runner
along by grounding to the right side.
Once attempting to do no more than advance Bernie
Carbo from second to third he accidentally hit the ball over
the right field fence.
Afterward he had to be held back from apologizing to
the manager for such a selfish act in hitting a homer. In
comparison to Dimaggio and other hitters with long streaks
'Doyle has been asked to do things which certainly are not
conducive to getting base hits. All Dimaggio was asked to
do by his managers was hit the ball hard and often.
On the way to the 22 game streak Doyle had a few close
calls for termination of his hitting luck. On July 31 he didn't
get a hit until the tenth inning and the following night it was
closer still.
With the streak at 19 games, Doyle was hitless when
Boston headed into the ninth with a 6-3 lead over the Detroit
Tigers and Luis Tiant on the mount.
Tiant who has been consistently tough quickly lost his
stuff and the Tigers scored four times to go ahead. This
gave Doyle a chance in the bottom of the ninth and he
promptly singled and went on to score the winning run.
After the game, an impish Doyle approached Tiant who
was still more than a little upset and said, "Luis I ap-
preciate what you did for me to keep my streak alive but I
think in the future you should just go ahead and win your
ball game.
