A bid to leave Middlesex county
as one riding and increase
London to three ridings met with
a cool reception in London
Tuesday at a hearing by the
federal electoral boundaries
commission headed by Ontario
Supreme Court Justice Campbell
Grant,
The commission has proposed
to split Middlesex county into
Middlesex-Oxford which would
include the northeast area of
London and the northwest area of
Oxford county, and Lambton
Middlesex. Currently the whole
of Middlesex county is included in
the riding of Middlesex-London-
Lambton,
Peter White of the London West
Progressive Conservative
Association proposed that the
commission leave Middlesex as a
single unit and let London have
three seats rather than the
present two.
"There is no way rural Mid-
dlesex can be heard politically or
represented through the present
party system while ridings are
completelydominated by the
urban voter," said Mr, White.
Ronald White, president of the
Middlesex Federation of
Agriculture appeared before the
commission and urged that
Middlesex remain as a unit
under federal redistribution. Mr.
White urged that "wherever
possible, the sense of community
should be retained."
Various speakers at the
hearing urged that Oxford county
remain as a unit with its base in
Woodstock rather than be lumped
together with London,
