Exeter Chamber of Commerce
president Oen Hoogenboorri told
council this week that the town
brochure is so out of date "that
anyone reading it would have
second thoughts about our town",
He said something should be
done to update the brochure and
noted that his organization was
interested in assisting with such a
venture.
The brochure displayed by
Hoogenboom had statistics
covering a period prior to 1969,
although a later promotional
piece has been printed,
Hoogenboom said he had at-
tempted to get some action from
the Industrial Committee on the
matter, but didn't indicate what
success he had in that regard.
He also took the occasion to tell
council the Chamber was most
unhappy over the condition of
Main St. during the past month.
During that period, the town
street sweeper was broken down.
"Did you look at it (the street)
this morning?" Councillor
Harold Patterson asked, noting
that the new sweeper, purchased
at a price of $23,000, had made it
initial run.
Hoogenboom said he realized
the problem was now rectified
but opined that something should
have been done before the
machine was available.
Exeter council agreed this
week to accept the new rate of 46
cents for billing sewer sur-
charges as established by the
PUC.
Mayor Bruce Shaw said that he
had missed the PUC meeting
when the rate increase was
suggested and noted that council
had the alternatives of paying the
46 cents, suggesting another
figure, or doing the billing
themselves.
He said the billing fees would
increase to about $3,118 per year,
while the present cost is around
$1,000.
Deputy-Reeve Tom MacMillan
opined that council could not do
the work any cheaper themselves
and noted further that no matter
how it was done, the same people
(the ratepayers) would be paying
for it.
Couficil also approved in
principle allowing the PUC to
purchase a former Ontario Hydro
sub-station lot7 at thOriorth end of
Exeter. The PUC indicated they
may use the lot for one of their
own sub-stations if council ap-
proved.r
In a third letter, the RUC
wanted to know if council would
be buying any Christmas street
decorations this year. They
purchased two last year at a cost
of about $234.
When council learned the
Board of Trade had not bought
any last year, they decided the
town would only purchase one for
the current season. In the past,
both council and the Board of
Trade have purchased two each
"The discussion is academic,'"
Mayor Bruce Shaw noted,
"because we POW have 4
sweeper".
Councillor Ted Wright noted
there were circumstances
beyond council's control, but
these were now rectified,
The „Chamber president
Suggested that littering charges
should be laid to alleviate some of
the problems on Main St.
He also complained about
comments made by Reeve Derry
Boyle, who was quoted as saying
the merchants could help keep
the street Clean by not depositing
their sweepings in the gutter,
"We're not here to clean the
streets," Hoogenboom noted,
adding that the Chamber
executive resented Boyle's
remarks which had hinted that
the merchants should sweep the
streets.
Councillor Bob Simpson said
that Boyle had only mentioned
that the merchants should clean
their sidewalks and put the trash
into containers rather than in the
gutter and that he had not
suggested they should sweep the
street.
Mayor Shaw said that the
comments were of one council
member only and he assured
Hoogenboom that council had not
insulted the merchants or the
Chamber,
and the PUC provides the labor
for erecting the lights.
Council also approved the
recommendations from the PUC
for improving street lighting in
the community. Some of the
areas where work will be un-
dertaken are: Marlborough St.,
Anne St., Victoria Park, the
Gidley and Senior St, areas ad-
jacent to SHDHS, the rear of the
town hall, Eastern Avenue and a
considerable portion of the north
end of Exeter.
Cost of the work has been
estimated at $6,945.
A cheque in the amount of
$3,381 was received as council's
share of sales tax rebates
received by the PUC for some
items on which tax had been paid
for a period dating back over
several years. The PUC also sent
along a bill of $285 for
bookkeeping charges involved in
searching the records to get the
rebate,
