Sharen refuses to retract
county council comments
"It's just- like a meeting of
United Nations."
That was the comment of John
Burke, general manager of the
Exeter Kongskilde plant as
delegates from the firm's plants
in. leven Countries gathered this
week for the annual meeting.
After the tour of the Exeter
plant on Monday, the meeting
moved to London's Holiday Inn
where grinding sessions were in
store fOr the men while the ladies
took the opportunity to get in
some shopping and see the sights
of the area as co-ordinated by
Molly Burke.
One of the major problems of
the Kongskilde annual meeting is
communications. With eleven
nationalities involved, the
meetings are conducted in
English and translated to French
and German and as Mr. Burke
commentedto the T-A last week,
he thought it was a little strange
when the firm had difficulty
getting a French translater,
But all ended up fine as the
meetings started with everyone
having their choice of the three
languages.

Reeve Sharon caught 'what for'
at Lambton county council last
week for comments on the
behaviour of some fellow
councillors but is to be
congratulated for sticking to his
guns despite demands for a
retraction made at a closed
session, Wonder why council had
to go into closed session?

At a recent Grand Bend and
Area Chamber of Commerce
»meeting "considerable"
discussion took place about the
Chamber assuming some losses
on projects this summer, The
`moped' draw scheme didn't
work out as planned and cost the
Chamber a few dollars while the
kite-flying show set them back
$700. Those complaining had been
opposed to underwriting cost of
the kite flying when it was
proposed. I suppose if it had gone
the other way and a profit had
been realized, they wouldn't have
refused the donations.
A novel suggestion to 'end
Grand Bend's parking problems
emerged from a meeting of the
village council Monday night.
Councillor Harold Green
suggested that the village should
look at the possibility of taking
over the entire area north and
cast of the intersection of high-
ways 21 and 01 and converting it
to a municipal centre and
parking area.
Mr. Green said that while it
may not be practical, the village
should even investigate the
possibility of taking over the
property and building currently
occupied by the Bank of Mon-
-treat. °
Council agreed that the
eventual answer to the parking
problem would probably be some
type of new building in the area
which could also house the
municipal offices, house village
fire trucks and municipal works
equipment.
Reeve Sharon said that a
temporary measure could be the
acquistion of several small lots in
Despite severe criticism and
demands to retract his
statements, Grand Bend Reeve
Robert Sharen has defended
charges he made that Lambton
County council is not operating
efficiently.
At a meeting of Grand Bend
Council three weeks ago, Mr.
Sharen charged that only a few
county councillors were doing
any work and that some were
coming back "looped" from the
lunch break.
When Lambton County council
convened on Wednesday, many
county councillors were
noticeably upset at an article
which appeared in the Sarnia
Observer, a daily newspaper,
Reeve Sharen was blasted by
council at a closed portion of the
session which was held at the
conclusion of the regular
business. He refused to withdraw
his comments.
The report in the Sarnia
Observer, while basically fac-
tual, was also "somewhat
misleading" according to the
Grand Bend reeve. The reeve
said that his charges were
originally that only about "seven
or eight councillors" worked
efficiently and that "several
came back looped from lunch".
The reeve said the publicity
surrounding the charges ac-
compliShed one thing as most of
the councillors returned on time
following the lunch break last
week and none appeared to be
"looped,"
the downtown area for parking
but suggested that no solution
would be found until the village
had' some method of enforcing
parking restrictions. He said a
move to hire a bylaw en-
forcement officer for the village
was necessary and he hoped it
could be done this winter,
Council discussed various
concepts of a building suggested
for the Legion Hall area which
could span the watercourse
currently running across the
property, While it was agreed
that a culvert would not be
suitable for the location, coun-
cillor Simpson suggested piers
With a cover would be acceptable
to provincial officials.
Councillor Green suggested
that the area might also be
suitable for pan integrated
recreation complex.
Councillor Robert Simpson and
deputy-reeve Rollie Grenier were
appointed to a committee to
study parking along with
Chamber of Commerce ap-
pointees.
Reeve Sharen said that the
Lambton county council is often
disparagingly referred to by
many as "the warden's country
club" and suggested that council
was often inneffective. The reeve
said he did not feel municipalities
were getting value for tax money
paid to the county.
The Lambton county'
restructuring study completed
four years ago was given as an
example of poor return by the
reeve, He said it had been ob-
vious since the outset of the study
that it would be rejected by
county council.
"I'm afraid the same thing is
going to happen to the Sarnia-
Lambton area planning study,"
said Reeve Sharen. The study is
costing $50,000 with funding of 80
percent coming froni the
province.
Lambton Warden Tom
Needham was reported to be
quite upset by the charges and
Reeve Sharen admitted later that
"Torn was mad as hell."
The warden stated that there
v,us little could be done about
those who abuse the noon lunch-
break. He said he had spoken to
some members of county council
but pointed out that 90 percent of
the county councillors were not
guilty of Reeve Sharen's charges.
Prior to the lunchbreak at
Wednesday's session, the
Lambton Historical Society was
about to address council seeking
support for an updated history of
the county when four county
councillors walked out of the
coned chambers.
Warden Needham criticized
the councillors later and said he
hoped it would not happen again.
Several times during the
session Wednesday, at least one-
quarter of council's 36 members
were absent from their seats.
when proposed projects will be
presented for approval, The
projects proposed will include a
Christmas bazaar, spring fashion
show, a supper at the end of the
theatre season and the annual
pre-season dance.
Members will be notified by
bulletin and announcements of
upcoming events will be placed in
the newspaper.
