Responsibility for students
belongs to their parents
By MARION JOHNSON
Activities have begun in
YACMR. This year our number
of membership has increased
considerably. Last year we had
ten members and this year we
have twenty members, This is
very encouraging and there is
room for everyone,
Thursday, September 25,
YACMR visited ARC Industries,
We had lunch with them and were
entertained by the trainees with
beautiful organ music.
Before lunch we enjoyed a tour
of the workshop. The trainees do
many things — from refinishing
furniture to making crafts. As
part of their work program they
are packaging our Christmas
cards which we plan to sell later.
Tuesday, September 30 we
visited Huron Hope School. We
ate lunch there also. The children
told us their names, ages,
telephone numbers and where
they lived. We also enjoyed
seeing their work from Exeter
Fair.
Mrs. Scott, their teacher then
explained to us their programs.
Each child is in a different
program and each one is learning
something different. We're

Editorial
More participation
In order for a student body to enjoy the five years of high
school it must participate in some of the high school's extra-
curricular activities.
Last week the editorial spoke about some of the sports at
South Huron. Sports are a very important aspect of student life.
However, not every student is athletically inclined. For students
Who enjoy less strenuous activities SHDHS offers associations for
people with common interests namely clubs.
There is a club for every type of interest in South Huron. For
example in South Huron is the Chess Club, Human Awareness
Club, Home Economics Club, Photography Club, Math Club and
Ski Club, Club meetings provide a time for students with the same
interests to get together.
These clubs are especially beneficial for grade nine students
or any new students because through them students get to know
one another.
Every week in the Guardian there will be an article on the
clubs of South Huron, Reports on the club will enable the entire
student body to know what's going on in their school.

Math club
to front
By BRENDA PEPPER
The club in the spotlight this
week is the Math Club. The group
meets every Wednesday night in
Room 108. Their staff advisors
are Mr. W. Webster and Mrs.
Graham.
The format for the year is
merely to have fun with math.
They play games such as three
dimensional tic-tac-toe which
always proves a challenge. One
of the main aims is to get ready
for the math contest coming up
later in the year.
The club will be divided into
two groups with a teacher in each
group. These groups will have a
small contest between them all in
preparation for the math contest.
It all sounds like a lot of fun.
This is math made enjoyable.
So come on out, and see for
yourself. Try it, you'll like it!
New teachers
an the next few weeks, the
Guardian will be introducing the
new teachers on the staff through
a series of articles. This is the
first of the series.)
One of the new additions to the
S.H.D.H.S, teaching staff is Colin
Lowndes. Mr. Lowndes teaches
Theatre Arts, - Canadian
Literature and Englishes 140 and
150. His homeroom is 3D and is
Theatre Arts.
When asked about what made
Mr. Lowndes decide to teach
English and Drama, he replied
that he had known pretty well all
through high school what he
wanted to do.
Lowndes is a graduate of
Sir Adam Beck in London. He
spent five years at UWO and one
year at Althouse, He majored in
English and Drama.
Although Mr. Lowndes attends
quite a few sports games, he is
not planning as of yet to coach
any teams.

A school dance is the major
fund raiser of the student council.
It is also a place to have fun and
get to know fellow students
better.
To keep people from getting
rowdy and causing trouble the
student council has appointed 25
prefects to keep things under
control. If any trouble develops
inside the school it is soon taken
care of by the prefects.
The actions of the students
while at the dance in the school is

field hockey

South Huron's first girls field
hockey team played in their first
tournament, Thursday. The meet
was held at Stratford Central,
South Huron's first game was
against an experienced St. Marys
team. South Huron kept the ball
in St. Marys end of the field the
entire game but was unable to
score. The game ended in a
scoreless tie.
The second game in the meet
was between St. Marys and
Stratford Central. St. Marys
scored the first point but left
Stratford Central tie the game
late in the last half.
South Huron played Stratford
Central, a Veteran team, in the
final game of the meet. South
Huron succeeded in keeping the
ball in Stratford Central's end of
the field for most of the game.
Stratford Central managed to
make a number of breakaways to
give Bev Preszcator, South
Huron's goalie, a chance to play.
Late in the first half Liz Brand
scored the winning goal for South
Huron. The game ended with
Stratford Central defeated 1-0.
South Huron plays again today,
Thursday, in Listowel.

council and the prefects on duty.
But once outside the school
and or after the dance, all
responsibility is lifted from the
student council. Parents cannot
expect the student council to
police outside the school,
The responsibility of the
students and their actions
belongs to the parents. Unless
kids are 18, they then are
reponsible for their own actions.
It is absurd then to think that
parents expect the student
council to take responsibility of
their children once they leave the
house. Parents should keep tab
on their own kids. The student
council will take responsibility of
the students once in the school.
Student council should not have
to suffer for actions of other
students outside the school.
Dances are part of school life
and should stay that way. Dances
should continue and not suffer
because of the incompetent ac-
Good meet
for runners
By JOANNE ONDREJICKA
Thursday the first track meet
at South Huron was held. All the
events took place at the cross
country trails, at Morrison Dam.
There were nine other schools
participating and its safe to say
the South Huron team did its
usual "best."
The senior team brought in a
first from Kim Postill and a
second from Janet Gielen. The
seniors placed third overall.
The midget team stars were
Lucy and Dorothy Van Esbroeck
and the juniors teams main star
was Paul Wareing.
Stars of the week were Kim
Postill, Janet Gielen, Lucy Van
Esbroeck, and Paul Wareing.
Best runners and honourable
mentions for the week went to
Kim Postill, Lucy, Dorothy, and
Paul Esbroeck, Janet Gielen,
Susan Chapman, Kathy
Livingston and Kathy Cooper.
So far the South Huron track
team has done well, and seem to
be holding their own against
opposing schools.
tions of immature students
outside the school,
Student council is not
responsible for such actions. That
is not the purpose of the student
council, They are doing a good
job as a council, let's not spoil
their efforts by false accusation.
Commandments
of a good sport
The following are the "ten
commandments" of a good
sport. It should be pointed out
that they can also apply to any
and every sort of contest in
which human beings take part.
The "ten commandments" are:
1) Thou shalt not quit.
2) Thou shalt not alibi.
3) Thou shalt not gloat over
winning.
4) Thou shalt not sulk over los-
ing.
5) Thou shalt not take unfair
advantage.
6) Thou shalt not ask odds thou
art unwilling to give.
7) Thou shalt always be willing
to give thine opponent the ad-
vantage of the shade,
8) Thou shalt not un-
derestimate an opponent, or
overestimate thyself.
9) Remember that the game is
the thing, and he who thinks
otherwise is no true
sportsman.
10) Honor the game thou
playest, for he who playeth
the game straight and hard,
wins even when he loses.
These "ten commandments"
hold many truths and can enable
us to be "good sports."
