The highlight of the day was the talk on "The History of Quilts" given by Mrs. Walter Scott of Belgrave. To illustrate her talk the platform and side walls of the hall were decorated with quilts, both old and modern, displayed by the branches of Huron West District, Mrs. Scott told how quilts have developed through the years from early pioneer days, when a girl had to have many quilts to display to catch a husband, to the present revival of interest in the making of quilts. Mrs. Scott said quilts probably started when Cleopatra ordered gazelle skins to be embroidered and sewn together to enhance and preserve her beauty. From Palestine, the Crusaders brought the art back to Europe, where it took many individual forms, and finally crossed the ocean to the New World. Older quilts are more drab in colour, being made from the better parts of the family's worn clothing but today quite frequently have white backgrounds with bright colours and are of various types and patterns.
