imagine. His pictures took us
from the dry areas of the Indian
Ocean coast up through the
pleasant pasture lands to the top
of the mountains, the highest
peaks of which are snowcovered
at all times. As well as the
climatic regions, his pictures,
illustrated the flowers and
animals found in this region.

HURON COUNTY RALLY
The 24th Huron County Rally
was held in the Belgrave
Women's Institute Hall, Belgrave
on Monday, October 6. The
highlight of the day was the talk
on "The History of Quilts" given
by Mrs. Walter Scott of Belgrave.
To illustrate her talk the platform
and side walls of the hall were
decorated with quilts, both old
and modern, displayed by the
branches of Huron West District,
Mrs. Scott told how quilts have
developed through the years
from early pioneer days, when a
girl had to have many quilts to
display to catch a husband, to
the present revival of interest in
the making of quilts.
Mrs. Scott said quilts probably
started when Cleopatra ordered
gazelle skins to be embroidered
and sewn together to enhance and
preserve her beauty. From
Palestine, the Crusaders brought
the art back to Europe, where it
took many individual forms, and
finally crossed the ocean to the
New World. Older quilts are more
drab in colour, being made from
the better parts of the family's
worn clothing but today quite
frequently have white
backgrounds with bright colours
and are of various types and
patterns.
An interesting historical report
was given by Mrs. M. Batkin who
described the maps of Huron
County now being drafted aiming
to include all the small hamlets
throughout the County that have
disappeared. Board members
Mrs ,G. Papple and.Mrs.Bradnock
brought greetings from the
Federated Women's Institute of
Ontario and a report of the
recipients of the "Children's Aid"
Scholarship was given by Miss
Pengilley, County Home
Economist. A senior training
course on vegetables will be
given in Clinton on October 21 and

observed November 10 to 18.
