Squirts end season
on successful note
three-Eleven other single .efforts,
made up Exeter's tremendous 75

England, with exhibition .games
scheduled for Liverpool, Man-
chester, Preston, Wigan, and
possibly Exeter (England). .

PROSPECTIVE JETS — The new coach of the Lucan-Ilderton ,lets Steve DeGurse chats with four new
prospects at Sunday's practice session at Huron Park. From the left are coach De Gurse, Rick Martin, Bill

The Exeter squirt soccer team
ended a very successful season
Saturday when they scored a 2-0
victory over the Sarnia Selects,
an all star team from the Sarnia
and district squirt league.
Earlier in the week, the local
youngsters dumped Clinton 5.1 to
end the Huron Minor Soccer
Association season with a perfect
record.
In Saturday's contest against
Sarnia, play was even in the first
half but Exeter completely
dominated, the second half,
Scott Lovie scored Exeter's
first goal from a corner kick
early in the second half and he
sealed the issue 10 minutes before
full-time with a strong 15 yard
drive that gave the Sarnia goal
keeper no chance,
In the win over Clinton Lovie
also led the attack with a two goal
performance. Getting one goal
apiece were Rick Gilfillan, Greg
Peitsch and Dennis Eisenschink,
The Exeter squirts played 25
games this season, many of them
in top competition and against
top City opposition. They won all
their home games, scored 22 wins
overall, had one tie, and suffered
only two losses, with an im-
pressive goals record of 75-15.
Centre forward Scott Lovie was
top scorer for the season with 31
goals, then inside-right Jeff Pfaff
came next with 11 scores, left-
winger Rick Gilfillan had nine,
inside-left Steve Gould six,
outside-right Greg Peitsch four,
and left-back George Pratt
Despite rainy weather con-
ditions throughout, the two
football teams from South Huron
District High School turned in
their best performances of the
young Huron- Perth Conference
season. On their home field at
Huron Park, the local school
clubs scored decisive victories
over Listowel District High
School.
In the opening half of the twin
bill, South Huron juniors
recorded a 21-6 victory and in the
nightcap the seniors roared to a
62-0 triumph.
The Panther teams will be back
at the Huron Park athletic field
this afternoon, Thursday with
Stratford Central supplying the
opposition. The junior contest
will get underway at 2 p.m. with
the senior game following im-
mediately.
In the junior game against
Listowel, only a few minutes had
expired in the first quarter when
the Panthers hit the scoresheet.
Jeff O'Brien took a pitch-out from
quarterback Paul Van Gerwen
and ran 22 yards around the end
for- a . major score: Steve Beer
converted and the score was 7-0.
In the second quarter, Paul
Van Gerwen ran 10 yards on a
quarterback sneak into the
Listowel end zone for six more
points. The convert attempt
failed.
The final South Huron point
getting came in the third period
when Perry Pooley in at the
signal calling spot took the ball
over the goal line from eight
yards out and Paul Van Gerwen
passed to Man Mercer for a two
point convert.
The only Listowel scoring came
in the final period on a quar-
terback sneak from the one yard
line.
Regular quarterback Perry
Pooley was used sparingly by
coach Doug Ellison due to an
injured finger.

IN ACTION — Crediton midget
pitcher Paul Brooks is shown in
action Sunday against Byron.
Football teams easy winners,
seniors chalk up 62 points
Paul Van Gerwen took over the
key signal calling spot and did an
excellent job being named the
best South Huron offensive
player of the day by his team-
mates.
On the defensive side Ted
Triebner took the player of the
day award with a total of 19 key
tackles.
In the rushing department Jeff
O'Brien led the Panthers with 103
yards in 11 attempts at the
Listowel line and Paul Pooley
was good, for 84 yards in 13
carries. Perry Pooley gained 40
yards in eight tries and Paul Van
Gerwen was good for 10 yards on
two attempts.
Steve Beer averaged 55 yards
on four kickoffs and Paul Gaiser
returned one Listowel punt a
distance of 10 yards.
In the special turnover
department Dennis . Pfaff
recovered a fumble and Ted
Triebner intercepted a pass.
Two scores in every quarter
In running up the 62-0 win over
Listowel, the Panther seniors
scored at least two touchdowns in'
every quarter taking a 27-0 lead
at half-time.
In the opening quarter on the
first series of plays for Listowel,
Larry Johns and Pete Kincaid
made crushing tacklesand jarred
the ball loose on the Listowel 30.
From this point quarterback
John Van Gerwen pitched to
Brian Taylor on thefirstplay and
skirted around the right end for a
touchdown which Paul Brooks
converted.
On the next series after first
downs by Doug McIsaac and
Brian Taylor the Panthers were
forced to kick and John Gould
boomed a 50 yarder into the end
zone. It was fumbled and Ken
Pinder recovered for the second
major score. Brooks again kicked
the extra point.
In the second period, good pass
catches by Ken Pinder and Phil
Knight set the stage for a short
touchdown sweep by Steve
Knight with Paul Brooks con-
verting.
Late in the first half, Al Lovell
blocked a Listowel punt and
Derek O'Brien recovered. From
here Van Gerwen hit Taylor for
20 yards and another score to
make the score 27-0 at the half.
At the break, coach Ron Bogart
told his charges "if you score
another 13 points and reach 40
there will be no practice Friday."
The boys took the coach seriously
and scored not 13 but 35 points.
Wednesday South Huron's
cross country team ran their first
meet at Stratford Central High
School. Approximately 18 high
schools from this area attended
this meet.
The rugged terrain tended to
slow down the contenders some,
but in the long run everyone
performed quite well.
The senior girls team, made up
of Kim Postill, Janet Gielen,
Agnes Van Esbroeck and Teresa
Voerman placed third among the
high school teams. Kim Postill
running strongly finished first
with Janet Gielen behind her to
receive second place.
The midget girls also won third
place among the cross country
teams. Thanks to the efforts of
Lucy Van Esbroeck, Dorothy Van
Esbroeck, Carol Ross, Marlene
Glanville, Jane Doug all, Carol De
Jonge, Susan Chapman, and
Kathy Livingstone the midget
girls ran splendidly.Finishing
third for the midget girls was
Lucy Van Esbroeck.
The rest of the team may not
have received an award but they
should be congratulated on a fine
effort. Brian Mayer of the senior
boys team, Maureen Muller,

Bogart commented after the
game, "my statement turned the
forces hungry."
In the third quarter Ken
,Pinder scored a major on a pass
from John Van Gerwen and the
quarterback went two yards for
another, Paul Brooks converted
both.
The fourth period was only a
minute old when Derek O'Brien
intercepted a pass and ran it 35
yards into the end zone. Brian
Taylor chalked up his third
touchdown on a 15 yard sweep as
he was inserterd at quarterback
and Marc Gelinas went two yards
for the final score. Brooks con-
verted all three to bring his game
total to eight out of nine attempts.
Marc Gelinas, a four year
veteran tackle showed good
speed when he was put into the
backfield in the fourth quarter.
Brian Taylor with three touch-
downs and 155 yards in 12 carries
was named the offensive player
of the week and Van Tuckey took
the defensive honours,
