In the first game of the series in Byron Saturday afternoon the Crediton youngsters scored an 8-5 victory but on their home field Sunday it was a different story with Byron coming out on the top end of a 15-7 score. Sunday, the Byron batters went to work quickly and scored 10 runs on Crediton starter Doug Mclsaac in the first two innings and picked up five more off reliefer Paul Brooks the rest of the way. The Crediton club managed three runs in the second inning, two in the fifth and one each in the fourth and eighth frames. Singles by Marty Becker and Doug Osgood coupled with walks Girls take to soccer Girls' soccer was very much in existence Tuesday when Precious Blood met Zurich in Huron-Perth Soccer at the Canner's Field in Exeter and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. In the first half Exeter con- trolled the play keeping the ball in the Zurich end of the field. Eventually Mary Ann Hogan fired the ball through a group of defenders to score. Zurich took over control of the game in the second half, and if it had not been due to staunch defensive play by goalie Leah Van Roessel, defender Nancy Van Bruwaene, and captain Joanne Vink, they would have scored several goals. Persistence paid off and St. Boniface scored, With the score tied at one goal. apiece the game was wide open and both sides had close chances to score. One of the Exeter players to stand out in this period was Louise Webb, a grade three playing on a grade seven and eight team. Women don't give away secrets; they trade them. to Paul Brooks and Paul Shapton and a hit batsman, Tom Hayter, produced the first three Crediton scores. In the fourth, Dale Dinney singled, moved to second on a walk to Paul Shapton and raced home on a single from the bat of Doug Mclsaac, In the Crediton fifth, Mark Chandler and Paul Brooks drew bases on bats and both came around to count on a single delivered by Tom Hayter. The final marker for the home club came in the eighth when Doug Mclsaac walked with two out and scored on a one base blow by Ken Govers. On the Creditor' mound Doug Mclsaac retired three opposing batters by strikeouts in two in- nings and Paul Brooks came on to fan even dozen in seven innings of hurling. In Byrop Saturday, the Crediton club scored three times in their first turn at the plate and were never headed. Byron scored twice in the bottom of the first but that was as close as they were able to get. In the Crediton first Dan Heywood singled and Doug Mclsaac walked with one out and Ken Govers batting in the Hockey Practice Tuesday, Oct. 14 8:30 p.m. Huron Park Arena for Huron Park Men's Hockey Assoc. GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Very lax A week ago we talked about the Ontario base all )) Association being very lax in arranging playpff games as they overlook two teams situated close together and pair clubs at quite a distance. This week we have a couple of more beefs with. the same organization. The Crediton juveniles travelled to Woodslee, which is in the Windsor area Saturday to compete in the final game for the OBA championship. A week earlier the Crediton club had played the first game in Woodslee and not being satisfied with the umpiring asked for neutral officials for Saturday's deciding contest. The OBA sent neutral umpires from Chatham but lo and behold the Crediton club was forced to pay the travelling expenses of the two officials. It certainly is a sorry situation when a team has to ask to have neutral umpires for a championship game and then pay the extra costs. We were in the umpiring racket some twenty years ago and it would have been unheard of to have a local official at a championship game. In the second game of the same series Crediton officials had umpires from London handle the game. One was Jim Cressman who just returned from umpiring in the Eastern- professional league in the United States. The same situation arose when the Crediton midgets travelled to Byron Saturday for the first game of the OBA semi-final, The father of one of the Byron players was um- piring behind the plate.Nobody has said he favoured his son. But the player in question received three of eight walks given up by the Crediton pitching staff. The Crediton midgets now tied at a game apiece with Byron in the semi-final round are the only team still in con- tention for a provincial championship. The Crediton juveniles bowed out Saturday inWoodslee dropping a 2-0 decision in a very well played game which was completed in only an hour and 40 minutes. Left hander Dave Cooper of Woodslee who is reported to be from Windsor held the Crediton team to only three hits and struck out a total of 14 batters. On the other mound, Larry Clarke of Crediton was almost as effective. Clarke gave up five hits and struck out seven. Good football action The two football teams at South Huron District High School are off to a flying start in Huron-Perth Conference play this year with two straight victories. The two local teams will be back in action this after- noon Thursday at the Huron Park field and any football fans could do a lot worse than spend a couple of hours watching the exciting action. Stratford Central will be supplying the opposition for today's doubleheader with the first contest slated to get un- derway at 2 p.m. In the la test action Thursday the two Panther teams had little trouble in disposing of Listowel in a twin bill. The junior game was won 21-6 by South Huron and the senior contest was a complete rout for the Panthers by a score of 62-0. test was a complete rout for the Panthers by a score of 62-0. Coach Ron Bogart said his boys turned in superlative efforts in the 62-0 romp. In the second half Bogart sent in most of the substitutes and they came through with flying colours. The opposition will get a lot tougher when they meet Goderich and Clinton later on in the schedule. Both twin bills against these two clubs will be played away from the South Huron home field. Tiger woes are over The very disastrous 1975 baseball season for the Detroit Tigers is over and thank goodness. The Tigers came very close to setting a lot of records this past year and all were of the nature nobody would be proud of. A couple of months ago they tied the major league record of losing 19 games in a row. An individual record was spared Sunday when manager Ralph Houck decided to rest centre fielder Ron LeFlore and go with a complete rookie lineup with the lone exception of designated hitter Willie Horton. LeFlore who is the speediest Tiger on the bases since the days of Ty Cobb has been having a lot of difficulty get- ting on base this year. He struck out 139 times and was only two short of the Tiger record of Jake Wood when he was kept out of the lineup Sunday. Del Crandall manager of the Milwaukee Brewers of the American league received his walking papers Sunday and don't be surprised if, this vacancy is filled by the all time home run king Hank Aaron who is a hero in Milwaukee. Frank Robinson who was the first black manager in the majors has had his contract with the Cleveland Indians renewed for another year, Hockey training started This is the time of the year when sports seasons get all mixed up. Baseball is still on the minds of lot of people, football is well on its way and many hockey teams are preparing for the 1975-76 season, We dropped out to the Huron Park arena Sunday mor- ning and caught a portion of the workouts of the Lucan- Ilderton Jets and the Exeter Junior Hawks, The Jets, last year's Continental Senior champions appear to be building for another championship. With most of last year's winning club back again, manager Don Urbshott and coach Steve de Gurse had four excellent prospects on the ice Sunday. If the four stay around the Jets should have a very formidable team. The newcomers are Randy Roth,Rick Martin, Bill Bannerman and Scott Graham, Randy Roth is the son of Mickey Roth, one of Stratford's best known hockeyists. He has just returned to Western Ontario after four years at Boston College where he was named to the all-American college team last year. Rick Martin was a member of the 1974-75 London Knights and just returned from a four day stay at the camp of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Bill Bannerman was a star with the St. Marys Lincolns a few years ago and went on to the Oshawa Junior A team. The fourth new recruit is Scott Graham, also of St. Marys who played college hockey in New York state at the same school as former Exeter Hawk Joe O'Rourke. • While several prospective members of the Exeter Hawks were missing from Sunday's workout due to baseball, soccer and farming, manager Fired MornmerSteeg and coach Terry Bourne expect to ice a strong club. The Crediton juveniles made a valiant effort to bring home the Ontario Baseball Association juvenile "D" championship but ran into a strong pitching per- formance by the opposition and lost 2-0 to Woodslee. The game in Woodslee Saturday was the third and deciding game of a best-of-three series to decide the provincial title. Each team had previously won one game each on their home grounds. Left hander Dave Coopers of Woodslee was very stingy on the mound giving up only three well scattered hits to the Crediton youngsters, Cooper faced only two more battersa than the minimum of 27 in the nine inning contest in chalking up the shutout. He recorded 14 strikeouts. The first two Crediton hits came in the second inning on singles by Brian Taylor and Bruce Hodge. Taylor was eliminated when he was un- successful in an attempted steal of second base before Hodge notched his safe blow. In the fourth Taylor again singled but this time was picked off first by one of Cooper's good moves. The only other Crediton base runner was Mike Desjardine in the first inning when he was safe on an error. Larry Clarke on the pitching hill for Crediton was almost as effective. He gave up six hits. Three came in the fourth inning when Woodslee scored their al111111111111111011111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111011111111111111111111111111111111111111181111111111111111111118 Drive Over The Bridge And From Beginners To Top of Of The Line SEVERAL GOOD USED SKATES NOW ON DISPLAY — WE ACCEPT TRADE-INS We Have A Complete Selection on Display of • Hockey Equipment • Team Sweaters & Jackets E-: ,,,,,,,,111111111111111111111111111111111111111111.1.1111111111111111111 C_ E.-- This Week's NOW ON DISPLAY Hockey Player SPECIAL Area's Largest Selection of One And FA Titan Two-Piece Sticks Hocy .19 5 Snowmobile ke 4 Reg. $8.95 SUitS .....
