G ranton 'Friendly Neighbors' commence activities

GRANTON
A small get-together was en-
joyed by the new Friendly Neigh-
bors Club on Friday afternoon,
Cards, crokinole and shuf-
fleboard were played, topped off
with tea and cookies.
An official opening of this new
club will take place at a later
date. With a New Horizon grant,
the Scout Hall has been fixed up,
recreation equipment purchased,
and furniture such as tables and,
chairs bought,

Dr. George Goth, the retired
minister of Metropolitan United
Church in London, will be the
guest speaker this week at the
Kirkton-Woodham Community
Centre.

Wednesday evening the UCW
met in the church basement. The
call to. worship and prayer was
given by Mrs. William Fenton
followed by the singing of hymn
"Onward Christian Soldiers".
Mrs. Fenton read the scripture
reading.
Mrs. Dyck gave a poem "Love
rules". A reading "When Sunday
was Sunday" was given by Mrs.
Jack Hodgson. Mrs. Fenton gave
a reading on a "House is for our
Protection.".
The Ladies Guild of St. Mary's
church held their meeting
Wednesday evening. Mrs. Jack
Morgan and Mrs. Gerald Wright
took the worship hour. One of the
items of business was the up-
coming bazaar to be held on
November 19.

sley United Church will be held

Mrs. George Prest sold tickets
on an afghan for aproject for the
residents of the Chateau Gar-
dens.
Mrs. Earl Lewis and Judy
Thompson spent a few days with
Mrs, Reta Gibbard and daughter
of Ancaster,
Tuesday evening. A donation was
voted to the 411 Club, and a
decision made to canvass for the
C.N.I.B.
Delegates were chosen to at-
tend the Area Convention at St,
Thomas in October. Program
conveners were Mrs. E. Sum-
mers and Mrs. J. De Brabandere.
Their topic was Citizenship and
World Affairs. Mrs. De
Brabandere gave an interesting,
talk on her native country
Belgium, illustrated with
photographs. Mrs. Summers
read an article that had appeared
in the Free Press relating to the
preparations that are being made
by a group in Britain calling
themselves the Civil Assistance.

part in a day of activities planned
by the United Churches in
Kirkton and Woodham to mark
the fiftieth Anniversary of the
United Church of Canada.
A worship service is scheduled
for 11 a.m., followed by a lunch
and a musical program at two
o'clock. Then the focus of at-
tention will shift to the Woodham
church where a new sign board, a
fiftieth anniversary project, is to
be dedicated.
Many former members of
Kirkton and Woodharn churches
are expected to attend as well as
people from area churches.

The Lucan No. 3 4-H club met
on Wednesday evening Sep-
tember 17 for the first fall
meeting at the home of Mrs. D.
O'Neill, Lucan. The girls were
discussing the many aspect of
personal development which
included grooming, posture, and
poise, also the care and storage of
clothing and personal
possessions.
Following the subject matter
they elected officers for the
present season, president Pam
Powell with vice president
Marylou Tindall, Secretaries are
Penny Hodgins and Michele
Dolan, press reporter is Nancy
Tindall.
This year Mrs. D O'Neill is club
leader, assisted by Mrs. J.
Straatman of Lucan.

Court Valentine Ladies Lodge
resumed their meetings after the
summer recess on Monday
evening in the Forester's Hall.
The sisters were in favour of
catering to the Firemen's
Banquet on the last Saturday in
November. Delegates were

sermon "Gaining a Name". The
children's story was entitled "My
Hero."
Mr. Bill Elliott of Toronto is
holidaying with his father, Rev.
T. Elliott and visiting his mother
who is a patient in Stratford
General Hospital.
The Anglican Church Women
met at the home of Mrs. Ha
Blackler, Tuesday evening. Mrs.
Garth ,Blackler presided for the
meeting. The Scripture passage
was read by Mrs. Gerald Paul.
The bazaar date was set for
Saturday November 8.

Granton ladies enjoy bus trip
A number of ladies from the
Granton area joined Prospect
Hill Woman's Institute's bus trip
to Toronto on Monday. It included
a cruise on Lake Ontario and
visits to the new Toronto Zoo and
Casa Loma,
4H news
The third meeting of the
Granton 4H Club, "Taking a Look
at Yourself" took place at the
home of Mrs. Micheal O'Shea.
Roll Call was answered by a
"Grooming basic that I learned."
An extra activity meeting is
planned for Friday evening
September 26 at the home of Mrs.
Joe French when the guest
speaker will be a beauty coun-
sellor.
It was decided to name the
book cover "Les Belle Femmes."
Members were asked to look for a
cover design as homework,
Discussions took place dealing
with the topic "A place for
everything" led by Mrs. O'Shea.
Mrs. French was responsible for
educating the members in
practical work and how to find
their maximum and comfort
reach for the height of shelves.

October 1 at 7 p.m. Girls from

The service of Harvest
Thanksgiving was observed at St,
Thomas Anglican Church on
Sunday morning. The celebration
of Holy Communion was con-
ducted by the Rev. George
Knight of the Caribbean, assisted
by the Rev, Mary A. Mills.
Rev. Knight gave a description
of his own country, the Bar-
bados, and spoke briefly on the
gifts of harvest that comes from
God, and God alone, Church
services will be withdrawn at
Granton on Sunday, September
28, it being the day of the Harvest
Anniversary services at Saint-
sbury Anglican Church at 11 a.m,
with the Rev. Mary A. Mills.
Owing to the illness of Rev.
Mary Mclnally who is a patient in
St. Joseph's Hospital, London,
Miss Mabel Brando and Miss Joy
Vicary, both missionaries from
Trinidad , conducted the morning
service at the United Church on
Sunday. Miss Vicary led in
worship and gave the children's
story entitled "A treasure hunt in
Trinidad," Miss Brando read the
scripture lesson and delivered
the message "That we all might
be one," She said the Lord has
made us all one family, no matter
what color, or denornination,we
are one in spirit, brothers and
sisters.
The ladies and Rev, & Mrs.
Kittley were guests of Rev.
Mclnally. Unfortunately the
hostess could not be present
owing to a hurried trip to hospital
where she is recovering from a
heart attack. Best wishes for a
speedy recovery.
Cub news
The Granton Cub Pack with
their leaders are looking forward
to joining the Kitchener Cubs at
the Eaverton Grey Owl Camp
near Acton, Ontario this coming
week.
Granton couple celebrate
At the Woodham-Kirkton
Community Centre on Friday,
September 19, friends and
relations attended a reception
and dance in honour of Mr. &
Mrs. Elmer Harlton on the oc-
casion of their fortieth wedding
anniverSary. About 275 people
from Granton and vicinity,
London, Stratford, St. Thomas,
Lion's Head, Dutton, Forest and
St. Marys, and other points,
danced to the music of the
"Silvertones" and afterwards
enjoyed a smorgasbord lunch.

We are happy to report that
Harold (Hoddy) Hodgson,
Newton Gunning and Jack Noon
are home from hospital,
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Harlton
returned on Wednesday from a
trip to Vancouver and White
Rock, B.C. On the way, it in-
cluded visits to Prospect Heights,
Illinois, where Miss Winnie
Harlton is attending a Literary
Crusades School. They visited
friends around Windfield, Iowa.
From Calgary they flew to
Vancouver, staying a few days
with George and Agnes Harlton.
They spent a few days with the
Gordon Marks in Winnipeg.

Thursday evening, the first in a
