The story of Mrs. Morrissey's own family, is an astounding one. Of originally eight children, five remain, and they are all scat- tered across the country. Mrs. Katy Groom lives in Vancouver,m with her family, Mrs. Mary" Bedard dwells in Detroit,-'Jack Morrissey lives in Crediton, Ben Morrissey in London, and Mrs. Hubert Desjardine lives in Amberly. Mrs. Morrissey also has 31 grand-children, and an amazing number of 55 great- grandchildren. She is truly hoping that she can witness the coming of a great-great grand- child, and she's optimistic that she will. At Mrs. Morrissey's 90th bir- thday party, 104 people were in attendance, and numbers such as that give some idea of the largeness and closeness of her family. With keen interest, I listened as Mrs. Morrissey reflected on Mt. Carmel's days as a fast-paced community. As I dashed up the steps of the house, I was greeted by a youth- ful, ninety-two-year-old gal, who had just finished the dishes. She insisted that I come in for a chat, even before I had a chance to tell her that that was exactly what I was hoping to do. Mrs. Catherine Morrissey is not only Mt. Car- mel's oldest citizen, but is proclaimed, by her neighbours, to be one of the keenest. Except for a five-year stay in Detroit during her youth, Mrs. Morrissey has lived all of her life in or near Mt. Carmel. Her childhood was spent on the Concession 14 of McGillivray township, where she lived with her parents and four sisters, Mrs. Morrissey's only living sister, Rachel Webster, celebrated her 90th birthday on September 1 and Mrs. Morrissey attended the celebrations, which were held in Detroit. When she married, Mrs. Morrissey and her husband Augustus moved about four miles from the place where Mrs. Morrissey had spent her childhood, to a farm in Stephen Township, where "Gus" did extensive cattle-farming. Carmel also boasted of a mail and newspaper depot, called the Offa Post-Office. Mrs. Morrissey even recalls the town-hall in which grades seven and eight were taught, and the old, much smaller separate school, and the original Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Mrs. Morrissey, herself, is still an avid reader, and never misses doing a cross-word puzzle from the paper. She feels she has a lot to be thankful for, and is especially thankful that she still has the full use of her mind, which she feels would be one of the worst things to lose. With real optimism she looks toward the future for her next major milestone: her ninety-fifth birthday. We in Mt. Carmel have no doubts that she will make her goal. Exeter _ 4* Iw
