In Harrow Saturday, in the third and deciding game the Crediton youngsters dropped a 12-2 decision to the home club, 'Harrow now qualifies for the Ontario Baseball Association championship round. They will meet either Alliston, Lindsay or Pembroke. The Crediton batters had trouble getting to the offerings of Harrow pitcher Tim Bondy. The young left hander allowed only four well scattered hits and chalked up 18 strikeouts. In his last five games, Bondy has struck out 90 opposing bat- ters. He helped his own cause at the plate with a double and triple. Harrow wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with 'five runs in the first inning and four more in the second frame. The Crediton scoring came with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Paul Gaiser singled to open the seventh and came around to score on a similar hit from the bat of Paul Pooley and a Harrow fielding miscue. In the eighth Perry Pooley and Brian Rader walked and Pooley was able to score without the aid of a hit. The other Crediton hits were singles by Paul Gaiser in the fourth and Perry Pooley leading off the sixth. Perry and Paul Pooley shdred pitching duties for Crediton. After the first two inning rallies Harrow picked up only six hits the rest of the way. Exeter Figure Skating Club Winners of Exeter Fair Draws AFGHAN. High school girls 4 in badminton play Five girls from South Huron District High School competed as a team in the Canadian Junior badminton championships this week and lost in the opening round. The local girls dropped a best- of-seven series to North Park Collegiate of Brantford, an older and more experienced team. Cheryl Chapman was the only SHDHS performer able to come up with a victory. She won 11.4 and 11-6 over her Brantford opposition. Other members of the local team were Lynne Brooks, Susan Chapman, Jayne Smith and Jill ' Tuckey. 1,1 Poi* 8 Times-Advocate, September 25, 1975 1011111M11111)1001111111 011110111101111111111111110111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111011{1111111111(114 FOIL A14.4., 4000 'SPORTS By 'toss:, H ' ugh More ball The baseball season continues far as two Crediton minor bait teams are concerned. The" next opposition for the Crediton midgets will be Byron. The first, game will be in Byron Saturday with the return contest of a best-of-three series in Crediton Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Crediton bantams were eliminated by Harrow Saturday in the third and deciding game of the semi-final series. The way the Ontario Baseball Association operated the midget playoffs this season still is a mystery to this writer. The Crediton midgets have already eliminated Amherstburg and Georgetown and now who do they meet? Nobody else but Byron. With a team like Byron only a distance of 30 miles away, the Crediton club was forced to travel distances in excess of 100 miles to play the other two series. In fact they made two trips to Amhertsburg which is 'the longest of the two jaunts. Well done, Tigers We would like to pass on our congratulations to the Dashwood Tigers for their excellent showing in winning the Huron-Perth intermediate baseball league championship. • c The Dashwood club eliminated the strong Clinton Colts in the first round and then defeated the Arva Athletics in lyee straight games to bring home the silverware. The way the Tigers disposed of Arva in the finals was very outstanding. They won the first game by a 2-1 score a 'couple of weeks ago and came back Sunday with a 1-0 shutout win. The Tigers received excellent pitching in the two vic- loriesfciyer Arva. Perry Stover gave up only six hits in the ;Opening win and lefty Jim Guenther was stingy in the se- cond contest allowing only three base hits. The return of shortstop John Hayter ,to the Tiger lineup this year helped in the fielding department. Hayter who was one of the reasons for the success of the Stratford senior club a year ago came up with five assists and a putout in the final game. Congratulations again to manager Jack Schade entire gang of. Tigers. „ , „ Tiger of a different colour „, We spent a pleasurable few hours in Detroit Sunda afternoon watching the Tigers, and their season at Tiger Stadium. Accompanying us were son Dan and Pete Wuerth and Al Flynn. While the Detroit club blew a one run lead in the ninth and dropped a 6-5 decision to the pennant bound Boston Red Sox it was an exciting well played ball gaine. itawas well played all except one miscue in the top of the ninth which • helped set up the Boston winning 'tally. Inexperience was responsible for the error. Second baseman Gary Sutherland went well out into right field and then dropped a pop fly but it appeared it would have been easier for right fielder Bob Molinaro to make the catch. It was only Molinaro's second appearance in a Tiger un- iform. He made his first start for the Tigers Saturday very successfully with three hits in the 5-1 win oyer,Boston, • The relief pitching of Fred Glynn of the Tigers Sunday must have been very encouraging for manager Ralph Houk. Since the injury to John Hiller, the Detroit bull pen• has been much less than satisfactory. • Glynn who came on in the second faced 16 ,batters before giving up a hit in the sixth. He allowed two walks but the runners were erased on a double play and an attempted steal of second which failed. Left fielder Ben Ogilvie was impressive with his ac- curate throwing and hustle on the bases. Ogilvie ran right through a stop sign by coach Joe Schultz and scored when the throw to the plate was high and wide. While happy with the Detroit pitching we were a little disappointed in the Boston hitting which has been in a slump for a few games. They managed only six hits in Sunday's game. It was unfortunate that Jim Rice was hit on the hand by a Vern Ruhle pitch in the second inning and he suffered a broken finger which will keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. Rice thrilled the crowd in batting practice when 'he banged a pitch clear over the left field upper deck and out of the park. With World Series time quickly approaching we will step out on that precarious limb and predict a final between the Oakland Athletics and Cincinatti Reds. Show revealing figures For the first time the National hockey league has disclosed its plus and minus figures on each player in the league. The system simply lists the number of goals scored by his team when each player is on the ice and also those scored against. The recently announced statistics in the August issue of Hockey News simply point out that the top teams have the best plus players and the lower teams have the most minus performers. To no one's surprise Bobby Orr was at the top with a plus .of 80 followed closely. by Bobby Clarke at 79. Next in line came Serge Savard and Larry Robinson of Montreal. It was interesting to see the two penalty killing stars of the Buffalo Sabres Don Luce and Craig Ramsay rate well tip,at 61 and 51 plus, respectively, There were some surprising statistics. Marcel Dionne now of Los Angeles spent more time trying to score than ' keep goals out. He ended with a minus of 15. BM GOldsworthy was another with a minus of 37, New Toronto Maple Leaf captain Darryl Sittler led his team in scoring With 80 points in 1074.75 but he ended up • with a minus oflO. The Crediton juveniles bounced back Sunday with a thrilling 12-11 win over Woodslee to remain in contention for the Ontario Baseball Association juvenile championship, In the first game of the best-of- three final in Woodslee Saturday the Crediton youngsters were on the short end of a 16-3 score and their hopes for a provincial title were somewhat dimmed. But, they came back to the Dashwood diamond Sunday afteiiioon and squeaked out the victory by a single run to extend the series to the limit, The final game will be played in Woodslee Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Larry Clarke who was the starting pitcher in Saturday's loss came back to star in, the second contest, Clarke went most of the way Sunday. He was relieved in the eighth inning by Paul Truemner but came back in the ninth with the tying run on third base and recorded two quick strikeouts to give his club the victory. Six runs in the third inning helped the Crediton club to Sunday's victory. Helping the cause were singles by Larry Clarke, Noel Skinner, Mike Desjardine, Kevin Nixon and Bruce Hodge. 1. The first Crediton score in the second came when Kevin Nixon was isafeion a fielder's choice and scored on Matt Muller's single. In the seventh singles by Matt Soccer squirts play in Michigan The Exeter squirts soccer team reached the semi-final round of the Michigan-Ontario Boys Soccer tournament held in Detroit, Sunday. In their first game, the Exeter youngsters scored a decisive 3-0 victory over the Roseville Blues, rated the second best club in Michigan. Rick Gilfillan; Greg Peitsch and Andrew Winters were the goal getters for Exeter. In the next round the locals ran up against the Michigan Troys and were defeated 3-0. It was the second time this year Troy has defeated Exeter for the only local losses in 23 games. In an exhibition game this week Exeter edged the Seaforth all stars 2-1 on goals by Scott Lovie and Steve Gould. The squirts 'will close out, the Huron minor season against Clinton this week and will be at home Saturday to meet the Sarnia Selects in an exhibition. In North American Midget Cup play, the Exeter club placed 20th in a competition which started with 627 teams, The four finalists are the Dallas Athletics, Los Angeles Vikings, New York Belginas and New York St. Andrews. This Weekend Only . . . Thurs., Fri. & Sat. No. 321 Canadian Hockey Stick $ 95 sent four more Crediton runners across the plate. In Woodlee Saturday, all three Crediton runs came in the top of the ninth inning on the only two hits they were able to salvage off the offerings of Woodslee pitcher Dave Cooper. Larry Clarke and Noel Skinner spoiled Cooper's bid for a no- hitter with ninth inning singles. Up to the ninth Crediton could manage only four base runners. Larry Clarke and Mike Desjardine shared pitching chores for the losers, The Dashwood Tigers won the Huron-Perth intermediate baseball championship Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over the Arva Athletics. The Tigers won the first game of the best-of-three series 2-1 several weeks ago and clinched the title with Sunday's triumph. Southpaw Jim Guenther turned in an excellent performance on the mound for the Tigers. He held Arva to only three hits and in the full nine inning game faced only seven batters more than the bare minimum of 27. Guenther gave up singles in the first, fourth and eighth innings and Arva was able to get a runner past first base in only three in- nings. • The only Dashwood run crossed Season underway for Legion darts The ever popular Exeter.
