CARMEL Tragedy struck at the home of Mr. and Mrs, J. Rutten of ER 8 Parkhill, late on thisl past Friday night. A lightening fire reduced their large cattle barn to a pile of ashes and bent metal. The fire occurred.at about 11;15 p.m., and was first discovered by the Rutten's daughter, Jo-ann. Soon to arrive on the scene were fire departments from Parkhill and Dashwood. The Dashwood fire- fighters did a successful job of preventing the fire from spreading to the Rutten house, then left the scene, while the Parkhill crew battled the actual fire until about 4:45 Saturday morning. The fire spelled a close call for Mr. Rutten and his two sons, Tony and Peter, who had been in the barn preparing for an in- coming shipment of 62 steers as late as fifteen minutes before the barn burst into flames. All the cattle that were in the barn were saved, but had to be sold im- mediately due to the destruction of the equipment with which the cattle were milked. Mr. Rutten plans to rebuild the barn as soon as possible, which is necessary to maintain his large cattle herd.
