T-A photo Oust Paris second time Juveniles advance to final The Crediton juveniles after waiting more than two weeks to get into Ontario Baseball Association playoff action against Paris wasted little time in qualifying for the next round. In Paris Saturday, the Crediton club scored a convincing 17-3 victory and back on their home field at Dashwood Sunday afternoon they downed Paris by a score of 12-4. The series had been delayed because of wet grounds and was originally awarded to Crediton when the Paris team failed to show for a Labour Day game in Dashwood. An appeal by Paris was upheld by the OBA executive and the series with Crediton was back in business. Midgets game ahead inprovincial playoffs You'll Enjoy The Walking At Exeter Fair The Crediton midgets con- tinued their winning ways in Ontario Baseball Association playoffs Sunday as they scored a decisive 10-4 victory over Georgetown in the first game of a best-of-three series. The second game is slated for the Crediton diamond Sunday afternoon at 1.30 and if a third and deciding game is necessary it Wallabees by Clarks Saturday's game in Paris came very close to being postponed again. When the Crediton club arrived about an hour and a half before game time they found water on the diamond. The visitors who have had lots of practice in recent weeks in keeping their own field dry went to work and the diamond was all set by game time. Larry Clarke went the seven inning distance on the mound for Crediton and held the opposition to a single hit while recording a total of nine strikeouts. Crediton's first run came in the second inning and Paris knotted the count in the fourth. The eventual winners went ahead 4-1 after five innings and broke the game wide open with a 13 run barrage in the top of the seventh. Noel Skinner's single chased Mike Desjardine home with the first Crediton score in the second and consecutive singles by Larry Clarke, Mike Desjardine and Bruce Hodge produced two runs in the fifth. In Sunday's contest Crediton scored three times in the first inning and never looked back in chalking their 12-4 decision. Again the Paris club was able to get only one hit from the Crediton pitching staff. This time it was Paul Truemner on the mound for the first five and one third innings. Truemner allowed only one hit but was in a bit of trouble on several occasions due to wild- ness. Larry Clarke came on in relief with one out in the sixth with the bases loaded and quickly recorded two strikeouts. He went on to fan six more in the next three innings. Rodger Finkbeiner and Matt Muller singled to help the first three Crediton runners home in the opening frame. In the third Larry Clarke and Roger Fink- beiner's singles along with a couple of walks and an error produced four more runs for the winners. In the fifth, Finkbeiner singled stole second and crossed the plate on Paul Truemner's infield hit, Mike Desjardine walked, in the sixth and scored on Rodger Fink- beiner's fourth straight single. In the Crediton seventh Bruce Hodge and Paul Truemner drew walks and came home on a single from the bat of Kevin Nixon. The final Crediton run came in the seventh when Larry Clarke singled stole second and scored on two Paris fielding miscues. In the Crediton sixth Noel Skinner singled and came artitind to score on a similar hit from the bat of Brian Taylor. The 13 run Crediton rally came as the result of six hits and the same number of bases on balls along with several errors. Bruce Hodge led the seventh inning batting with a pair of singles. Brian Taylor and Rodger Finkbeiner each cracked out doubles and Kevin Nixon delivered a triple and Noel Gridders start at high school The two football teams at South Huron District High School participated in their first exhibition action Monday and they came away with a win and a tie in a doubleheader in London against Banting high school. Coach Doug Ellison reported good defensive tackling by Dave Atthill, Dave Cooper, Brad Taylor, Mark Pridham and Brad Ca nn. The only score in the senior game came when John Van Gerwen of the Panthers booted the ball into the London end zone and it was fumbled and Phil Knight recovered for six points. Paul Brooks was good on the convert and the score was 7-0. The Crediton juveniles travel to Woodslee Saturday to play the first game of best-of-three series. The second con- test goes back in Dashwood Sunday afternoon, also at 2 p.m. If a third game is necessary it will be played later the same afternoon. Russell Clarke and Don. Finkbeiner handle the Crediton juveniles. The third club in contention, the bantams guided by Lorne Preszcator travel to Harrow Saturday afternoon to play in the third and deciding game of a best-of-three series. Other teams remaining in the bantam playoff picture are Alliston, Lindsay and Pembroke. A good Tiger day Sunday was a special day at Tiger Stadium in Detroit as five members of the team were recognized for 10 years or more of service. At the same time special admission prices were in effect to allow families to take advantage of lower ticket prices. We were able to catch the special ceremonies on WJR radio while travelling to an assignment Sunday afternoon and enjoyed listening to Tiger president John Fetzer and the honoured players. First to be introduced was Gates Brown, the premier pinch hitter in the major leagues. Gates who has been with the Detroit club for 11 years holds the record of 107 hits in a pinch hitting role with 16 home runs. He is still in a Tiger uniform and adds to the records every time he gets a safe hit. Brown started off his career with the Tigers in 1963 very auspiciously with a home run in his first turn at the plate and hit home runs in two consecutive appearances in 1968. Probably the solidest Tiger performer through the past 10 years has been Bill Freehan. The fine catcher in his thirteenth year with the Bengals has appeared in more than 1,400 games, a record for Detroit catchers. Freehan has won five Golden Glove awards, has been named to the American league all star team on 10 occasions and was named King Tiger in 1967. He holds a number of fielding records for most putouts, chances, assists, etc., The most exciting and successful Tiger pitcher during the past 12 years has been southpaw Mickey Lolich. While having his ups and downs, Lolich leads lefthanders of all time with 2,067 strikeouts and has recorded 200 or more whiffings in seven seasons. He was named King Tiger in 1974 but his best year had to be 1968 when he won three games against the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series and aided his club at the plate with a home run, the only one of his major league career. Lolich was named to three all-star teams and was runner-up for the Cy Young award as the top pitcher in the majors in 1971. At the plate during the past decade the top Tiger has been Willie Horton, He is fourth on the all-time Tiger home run list with a total of 248 round trippers and 827 runs batted in, Horton in his eleventh season with the Tigers is the only player in the American league to appear in every game for his team this year. His playing every day has been made a little easier by the fact he appears only as a designated hitter and does not play defensively. Willie has been a member of four American league all star teams and was named the most exciting Tiger in 1965. The handiest man the Tigers have ever had is Mickey Stanley. In his 10 years with Detroit, Stanley has played every position but pitcher and catcher. His versatility showed up in particular in the 1968 World Series when the Tigers had a bit of trouble at the shortstop position and he filled in very capably. Stanley boasts a fielding record of .9925 over 10 years and holds the record of going 220 consecutive games without making a miscue. He also holds the mark of recording 11 putouts in one game. That came in 1973. A former Tiger was also honoured Sunday when Jim Northrup was called from the Baltimore Orioles dugout to receive an award from president John Fetzer. Northrup who was traded to the Montreal Expos in 1974 and then on to Baltimore spent 10 years with the Tigers and really came to the fore in 1968 and especially in the World Series of that. year. His home run hitting certainly helped Detroit to over- come the Cardinals. During the 1968 season he hit bases loaded home runs in two consecutive times at bat in two consecutive innings. It was our pleasure to spend four days in Detroit during the '68 World Series and Northrup was our favorite on and off the field. With the Tigers in the midst of a rebuilding program this Could be the last year for some of the five veterans and it Was a fitting gesture by the management to hold Sunday's recognition day. Every one of the five speaking Sunday said Detroit had the best fans in the world. This has certainly been the case this year with a very mediocre showing by the club and the fans keep coming out. We expect to be iii Tiger Stadium Sunday afternoon when the Boston fled Sox will be supplying the opposition for the Tigers. While hopelessly out of contention the Tigers could be very instrumental in deciding the American league's eastern division Winner. While tioston holds a four game edge over l3 altimort at the titne of Writing a three game Detroit. aweep this weekend could be a big factor in the eventual outcome. on these two EXETER FAIR WEEKEND SPECIALS TAPES Citizen Band RADIO 159" SALES TAX REBATE APPLIES TO ALL OF THE ABOVE PASSENGER CARS London to play at Huron Park The Huron Park arena will be the home of Junior "C" hockey club for the coming winter season. , Gil Williamson, coach of the London Diamonds announced recently that his club will be playing all of their exhibition and regularly scheduled OHA games at the Huron Park arena.
