World Affairs was the subject
under discussion at the River-
view Women's Institute meeting
this month. Mrs. F. Crouch
conducted the meeting.
Roll call was taken by having
members respond to the question
of why does Canada attract
people from other countries,
Education, peace, and wide-open
spaces were among a few of the
answers given.
Mrs. H. Twynstra read about
the cultures, customs and
traditions of other countries. The
motto was True Internationalism
meaning an understanding of the
way of life of other persons
outside of Canada.
Mrs. H, Morton, Curator of
Tweedsmuir History, reported on
the Cloverdale History,
Mrs. F. Crouch spoke of some
of the travels to other countries
she had taken personally
bringing first hand knowledge of
people beyond our borders.
A poem, "Good Morning" was
shared by Mrs. Alton Craven
which made members aware of
the numerous ways in which a
new day can be met,
How many words can be for-
med from the phrase World
Affairs? This was the challenge
put to the members. Jean Lee
was top winner finding a total of
forty-four words.
Presisent, Mrs. McAlpine
closed the meeting with the
Institute Grace. Mrs. C. George's
group provided the lunch which
followed the meeting.

For anyone who knows her, it
came as no surprise last Wed-
nesday evening when it was
announced that Jana Lyn Stewart
of Ailsa Craig had won top
honours and chosen as "Fairest
of the Fair".
Chosen from 32 contestants,
Jana Lyn has been busy all this
past week acting as hostess for
the Western Fair. Her duties in
this capacity have included at-
tending several scheduled lun-
cheons, sometimes giving a brief
speech, presenting ribbons, and
representing the Western Fair in
general, putting people at ease
with her natural graciousness
and charm. She also took part in
the official opening.
The past year Jana Lyn has
been enrolled at the North Texas
State University where she is
studying music, speech and
drama, Although her respon-
sibilities at the Fair will delay
her return to school slightly, she
plans to go back next week for
her final year. Keenly interested

when it would have been con-

back there was a certain
satisfaction in getting the mail
through.
"I remember having my

I'd gone very far" said Mrs.
Gilbert. "One of the ladies along

in Biblical drama, she hopes to
become involved in Biblical films
in the future.
The daughter of Mr. & Mrs,
Andy Stewart, Main Street, she
has always been interested and
active in her home community of
Ailsa Craig, and spent the
greater part of this past summer
in community involvement. All of
July was devoted to teaching in
various Bible schools in the area
including two weeks at Nairn, one
week at Lucan and one week at
Wortley Road Baptist Church in
London.
During August she devoted
most of her afternoons to
teaching children in the area how
to swim, using the family's back
yard swimming pool to give in-
struction as the community still
lacks public swimming facilities.
Last year the 21-year-old
winner represented the village as
"Miss Centennial" and will now
be eligible to cqmpete at the
Canadian National Exhibition in
1976 for the title of "Miss CNE

"Most of the time the people
are very kind", acknowledged
Mrs. Sutherland. "They'll come
and pull you out with tractors
when you slide into the ditch and
help wherever they can"..
And with 105 boxes on the
Sutherland's route and 138 on the
Gilbert's it's handy to have a few
good neighbours.

Although there were only a few
present to witness it, a rare in-
cident took place last Thursday
morning at the Ailsa Craig Post
Office. Two of the Ailsa Craig
rural route postal carriers
received their 25 year service
pins.
Keith Gilbert has been serving
RR 1 Ailsa Craig for the past 38
years, and Roy Sutherland has
been covering RR 3 Ailsa Craig
for the past 30.
Harold L. Elder, manager of
the Southwestern District came
from London along with a
representative from the Strathroy
Post Office Stan Hayes to present
the two men with their pins, A
few of the postal employees and
family members were on hand to
congratulate them,
"When I first read the names of
the persons involved I thought I
had a hit on my hands", quipped
Mr. Elder. "I was certain it read
Gilbert and Sullivan"!
The pins bear the latin in-
scription, "Servire Populo" - to
serve the public. And as the
Gilberts and the Sutherlands
related events which had taken
place during their mail
deliveries, it was evident the
motto was indeed lived.
"We began delivering mail on
January 1, 1938", stated Keith
Gilbert. At that time Christmas
and Sundays were the only days
in which there was no mail
delivery.
The Gilbert's began their route
with a horse in buggy in '38 while
the Sutherlands began their
career on July 4, 1945 driving a
model T. Ford.
"I remember my mother
heating an old catalogue on the
stove for me to sit on while I rode
in the buggy", recalled Mrs.
Gilbert.
Several incidents of extreme
conditions during the winter were
