Minister starts duties at Greenway church (The following is a periodic newsletter sent from Andy Ryskamp presently serving in Feni, Bangladesh with the Christian Reformed Chum in agricultural development. An employee of the Ailsa Craig Co- / Op for four years before going to Bangladesh, he was very active in the community and has many friends in the area). Dated August 15 '754My friends in Ailsa Craig: Today I really feel like a news correspondent. Most of you know that song, "There is a Kind of Hush All Over The World". That is what it is like here in Feni today. Shops are closed, the roads are empty of buses and only a few people. Everyone is gathered in village homes where someone has a radio so they can hear the latest news of what is happening in the capital, Dacca. This morning just after breakfast a friend from town came strolling in with a distressed look on his face, saying that the country's president Shiek Meyshik had been shot during the night and that martial law was being proclaimed. As a result we are under 24 hour curfew. Up tp now the curfew has given me a chance to catch up on my paper work and to write friends who have been waiting for letters for awhile.Hopefully no further bloodshed will take place, but at the time of writing (August 15) I do not know what the situation is in Dacca, This morning I wrote up three experiments in potato, sorghum and sunflowers which we share with the government. They ap- preciate work done on the farm related level. I hope the new government strengthens the bond between the extension unit and the farmer for it is through this system the farmer gets such needed imputs on fertilizer, credit, seeds, etc. There is rich potential here for agricultural development and it only needs a motivated extension unit to help the farm realize that potential, Although it is with some hesitancy most people seem to be looking for a chance for the better under martial law. My Honda has been com- plaining about all the meters it has put on lately so it is getting a rest today also. We are starting a new program in a district in the north. That is an eight hour ride including four hours on an up- stream ferry. Making contacts and arranging for housing to sort out westerners was the order of the week. The heavy rains seem to have stopped and the vegetables, wheat, corn and potato season is approaching fast. So lots of work ahead. That must be what makes the time go fast because it is over a year ago when I left good, old Ailsa Craig. A few weeks ago I returned from holidays in which I had the chance to stop in seven Asian countries from Thailand through Indonesia up to Japan. It also gave me an opportunity to explain our work in Bangladesh to a couple of our mission outreaches in Korea and Taiwan. Now yours truly is back in Bangladesh raring to go. It is my hope and prayer, and I know yours too, that the plight of the Bangladesh farmer will be im- proved by the new regime. Keep writing.
