Through rec director Jim McKinlay we have received
some additional information about the Ontario. Sports
travelcade which will be visiting Exeter in the next couple
of weeks,
The travelcade will be parked in the area of South
Huron District High School. In addition to the general
public it will be available' to high school students and also
elementary youngsters who will be visiting for half hour
periods.
The mobile unit will be in town on Thursday and Friday,
September 25 and 26. The morning of the 25th the first ten-
nis clinic will be held at 11:40 a.m. for a high school class,
Community instruction will be available to the com-
munity between 6:30 and 9 p.m. In charge of the tennis
clinic will be Gordon Robinson, technical director of the On-
tario Lawn Tennis Association,
Another clinic on orienteering will be held Friday with
two sessions in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Orienteering is a sport which does not require any ex-
ceptional skills or fancy equipment. Orienteering is
something like car rallying, except you do it on foot and the
person involved is both the driver and navigator.
Participants are given a detailed topographical map of
an area marked with checkpoints. Walking or running with
the map and a compass, the contestant Makes his or her
way to each checkpoint on the map. Those home with the
best time win.
We would hope a large number of adults participate in
the clinics and classes planned while the travelcade is in
town,
Orienteering is a sport which a lot of people can be a
part of and provides the exercise of which so many of us do
not get.
An interesting event
The hockey season won't get underway for a month or
so but the town of Mitchell will be visited by a number of
hockey celebrities Sunday afternoon.
At 2:30 Sunday afternoon a historical plaque honouring
one of Canada's greatest hockey players Howie Morenz will
be unveiled in a new Mitchell park at the intersection of
Highways 8 and 23.
Expected to attend from the Montreal Canadiens are
vice-president and general manager Sam Pollock and
former player and coach Toe Blake. From the Morenz
family will be Howie's sister Mrs. Gertrude Bushfield and
his son Howard and daughter Mrs. Bernie Geoffrion.
Although born in Mitchell and a member of the Mitchell
juveniles in 1916-17, Morenz was known throughout most of
his illustrious hockey career as the "Stratford Streak".
He played his first organized hockey at the age of 14 as
a goalie for the juveniles. He allowed 21 goals in his first
game and was quickly converted into a forward.
During his 14 year National hockey league career,
Morenz won the Hart trophy on three occasions and twice
:;won the league's, scoring title: In .1„4 ,seasons he scored 291
"'-goals and 208 agslgts. .4
On January 28, 1937 he suffered a broken leg in a game
against Chicago and died about six weeks later of a heart at-
tack when he appeared to be recovering satisfactorily.
Morenz's funeral held at the Montreal Forum attracted
a crowd of mourners estimated at from 25,000 to 40,000.
In 1950, a poll conducted by the Canadian Press voted
Howie Morenz the most outstanding hockey player in the
first half of the twentieth century,
Three successful teams
The excellent success enjoyed by the minor baseball
program in Crediton continues with three teams still in con-
tention for Ontario Baseball Association championships.
At the moment the Crediton bantams are waiting for
semi-final competition probably from Harrow and the
juveniles are expected to meet Woodslee this weekend,
The biggest news comes from the Crediton midgets who
made a tremendous comeback over the weekend to
eliminate Amherstburg.
After dropping the first game of the series 15-4 in
Amherstburg the Crediton youngsters rebounded Saturday
from an early 7-1 deficit to post a 9-7 victory. They came
right back Sunday to win 4-2 and qualify for the next round.
The next opposition for the Crediton midgets will be
Georgetown. The first game goes in Georgetown Saturday
with the second contest in Crediton Sunday afternoon at
1: 30 p.m.
Best of luck, fellows, as you move down the playoff
trail.
Word from over 'ome
Received a card in the mail Monday from Dave Silcock
of town who is enjoying a holiday in his native England.
Silcock came to North America a few years ago to play
with the Detroit Cougars soccer club and eventually found
his way to Exeter.
Dave is the fellow who coached the Exeter squirts
soccer team this summer and gained recognition for his
boys as the sixth best team in Canada as they participated
in the North America Midget Cup competition,
The squirts were named as one of the North America
minor soccer teams of the year and as a result have been in-
vited to tour England next spring.
According to the card from Dave he is making
arrangements for the soccer youngsters to visit Lan-
cashire, which he calls the soccer capital of England.
Exeter minor soccer group president Damien Solomon
will be meeting with his executive and parents of the boys
in the near future to discuss the possibility of the trip.
