Page 10 Times-Advocate, September 4, 1975 Don't need racket . for this squash game Mr. & Mrs. Bob Meininger, Lisa, Bruce and friend spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Art Meininger, Esther Snyder of Kitchener spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Fermon Snyder and brothers. Esther is leaving Friday for a six month study course in Chicago on a Literature, Crusade, after which she plans' to leave for mission field work in ,the Caribbean. Mr. & Mrs. Ken Baker and Nancy visited Saturday evening with their brother-in-law and uncle, Roland Neil at St. Joseph's By MRS. RENA CALDWELL Hospital, London. Mr. & Mrs, Tony Regier and Christopher of Detroit visited on the weekend with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ken Baker, Edwin Snyder spent a few days last week at Conestoga Camp. Mr. & Mrs. Don Baker and Nancy spent last weekend in Detroit and helped their sister, Sandra and family move to their new home. In midweek, the Bakers travelled to Tobermory and enjoyed the boat trip to Manitoulin Island. Visitors during the week and Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Morenz were Mrs. Morenz sister, Mrs. Cliff Dell, Tanya and Cynthia of Belleville, Lynda and Bill Morenz of London and Steve Corbett of Hensall. Mrs. Milton Sweitzer and Debbie Price spent a weeks' holidays in Welland where they visited Mrs. Sweitzer's mother, and sisters and families, Mrs. Elsie Comfort, Mrs. Ted Leadley and Mrs. Garson Brady, I asked a few people what September meant to them. Here are some of the replies: "It means winter is coming, and I dread the thoughts of it," moaned a housewife. "Time to start the corn," decided a farmer, "Back to work," sighed a vacationing secretary. "End of summer. One last good weekend," a teenager com- plained, "School. Ugh!" This remark was made by a student, not a teacher. Maybe some teachers share his sentiment, though. September seems to be an unpopular month, but surely there's something about it that pleases someone. A fellow chipped in optimistically, "It'll soon be Christmas." If we want to avoid the stam- pede at Christmastime, Sep- tember is an excellent month for shopping, Most of the tourists have returned home; the children are back in school; and the stores are less busy. We can browse in peace, Few of us take advantage of the opportunity though. If we're looking for bargains, most of the stores now sell their summer stock at reduced prices. We'll appreciate the savings next year. Winter clothes already hang on many racks. A disturbing event each summer is the arrival of our fall and winter catalogue in July. It's a reminder that summer won't last forever, even though some of us wish it would. • Nevertheless, after the hot summer weather, the cooler temperatures of September are a relief. We can work outdoors more comfortably. RE.member those dead leaves, tomato plants, bean vines and even weeds can be used as fer- tilizer for next summer's gar- dens. If we start our compost piles now, we can save on fer- tilizer in the spring. September introduces the most colourful season of the year. For awhile, the lawns become green again'and the leaves brighten the landscape. To nature lovers, it's a magidel time. Autumn sets the imagination of poets whirling and the fingers of painters swirling. Most people cram a'k. much outdoor fun as possible into each September day.We know that all too soon nippy winds will chase us inside. Armchair sports' fans have a heyday in September, Your toughest decision is choosing between the telecasts of the World Series baseball gtimes and the regular season football games, When non sports' fans are allowed near the television, we're happy to note the summer reruns have ended, If you saved your vacation until September, you can now travel at your own speed. The highways are less congested, and the tourists spots are less crowded. Although Ontario's largest celebration - the CNE - is over, small fairs and rodeos are going strong. Each community tries to outdo the neighbouring towns, but all the shows stress the same thing - people having fun, Parades and marching bands, sawdust and clowns, hot dogs and candy floss, horse and pony races, tugs of war, log sawing and displays of crafts are as much a part of autumn as the falling leaves, September combines the new pleasures of fall with the leftover fun of summer. Isn't it a good month, after all? To play this game, there is no need for a ball and racket, just a trip to the market. Summer squash is :known under three names; vegetable marrow, zucchini and scallop. The vegetable marrow is cylindrical with one end larger than the other. The skin is smooth and creamy yellow while the flesh is white, The zucchini is similar to the vegetable marrow in shape and size but its dark green skin with black stripes is slightly, rough. The flesh is creamy-yellow. The disc-shaped scallop or pattypan with its scalloped edge has a smooth or slightly warted white or yellow skin and greenish white flesh. Unlike the winter squashes and pumpldns,summer squash taste their best when immature, The rind is then very soft and the seeds underdeveloped, so that the whole vegetable is edible. Summer squash are also quite perishable, They should be baked, boiled or steamed as soon as possible after purchasing, Zucchini • is a very interesting vegetable, but, except in the kitchens of persons of Mediterranean origin, it is somewhat neglected in Canada. The Italians and the Greeks in particular are very fond of them. Both the foliage and tender stems of the young vines are to be found in specialized domestic markets for quick cooking as greens and the rich orange buds of the flowers are delicious when sauteed in butter or added to omelets or scrambled eggs. When choosing zucchini, try to pick the smallest, youngest specimens possible. If they are only three or four inches in length, they are indeed delicious and delicate in flavor, and memorable when served in a variety of ways. Zucchinis do not need peeling. Simply wash them and trim off both ends. Zucchini may be steamed, French fried, sauteed or stuffed and baked. Season with butter, salt and pepper, tomato sauce, a dash of French dressing , sour cream, oregano ofItalian cheese, Stuffed Zucchini Neapolitan 1/4 pound ground beef 'Stuffed Zucchini Neopolitan,1 a 1/4 cup finely chopped onion simple dish special enough for I. clove garlic, minced company.
