The Exeter Royals started the
Southwestern fastball league
playoffs off on the right foot
Tuesday night with a 4-2 win over
the Lucan Irish,
The second game of the best-of-
five semi-final series will be
played at Exeter community
park tonight, Thursday at 9 p,m.
The third game is slated for
Lucan Sunday night also at 9 p,m.
Nairn and Lieury are meeting
in the other semi-final series.
The Royals scored four runs in
the first two innings Tuesday and
held on to win, Doug Pearson
started the rally in the first in-
ning with a single and Ray

Lumsden's double scored him,
Randy Decker then hit a long
home run over the left centre
field fence to make the score 3-0.
The Royals added one run in the
second as Ron Bogart doubled
and scored on Ray Lumsden's
single.
The only hits off Brian Hodgins
came in the Lucan fourth inning
as Gerry Finkbeiner singled and
Dennis Corty doubled to score
their two runs,
Briaralodgins pitched a strong
game allowing only two Impart
hits and striking out seven bat-
ters to pick up the win,
Thursday night the Exeter
Royals played their final regular
season home game and clinched
second place with a 3-0 win over
Ailsa Craig,
Royals pitcher Brian Hodgins
allowed one base runner in the
game as Lewis Slater managed a
single.
The Royals got all the runs they
needed in the first inning as Ron
Bogart singled and scored on a
ground ball by Scott Burton. They
added another run in thel third as
Bogart reached on an error and
scored as Doug Pearson and Ray
Lumsden singled.
They scored the final run in the
sixth as Terry Bourne reached
first on an error and scored from
first on a bunt by Brian Hodgins
which was over thrown at first,
Brian Hodgins picked up the
win allowing one hit and striking
out 11 batters bringing his record
to 13 wins and two losses.
Recently the Southwestern
fastball league staged their
annual all star game. The East-
West all stars beat last year's
league champs from Lieury 5-0.
The all stars were chosen by
votes by each team. Two
members of the Exeter Royals
were voted to the first all,Star
team in the east division. Ray
Lumsden qualified as the top
third baseman and Brian
Hodgins the number one pitcher.
Other members of the East
Division team were Dennis
Carty, Lucan; Jim Merryles,
Huron Park; Carl Dunlop,
Bryanston; Rick McFadden,
Ailsa Craig; Jamie Robb, Poplar
Hill; Rusty Smith, Lucan;
George McQueen, Poplar Hill.
Rick McFadden was the hitting
hero for the all stars with four
hits off Bob Robinson. Brian
Hodgins, Gord Mauer and Ernie
Schlegal combined to shut out the
Lieury batters,

Three Exeter and district
ponies were winners in the final
racing meet of the season of the
Huron County Trotting Pony Club
held at the track west of Exeter
Sunday afternoon.
The local drivers to take their
ponies over the finish line in first
position were Rick. Parsons, Ivan
Webber and Jack Parsons.
Rick Parsons captured the fifth
race with Kingscourt Duke in a
fast time of 1.47.4. Winner of the
sixth race was Lucky Lady
piloted by Ivan Webber. The time
was 2.03.
G. A, Penny's Dream clicked
off the fastest time of the af-
ternoon in taking the ninth heat
with Jack Parsons in the sulky.
In the tenth race on the card,
Kevin Windsor was runner-up
with Mickey Joe and Billy
Windsor was second in the
children's slow race with the
same pony. Gwen Windsor was
third with Day Break in the slow
division of the powder puff.
