In last week's issue a story
from the Ontario Junior Farmers

it was Tom Hardy who won the

the mile.
Voyageur
kept busy
Trucks, school buses and other
vehicles are being transported by
Vogageur Air Cushion Vehicle
this summer between the Quebec
community of St. Joseph de la
Rive and the St. Lawrence River
island, He aux Coudres. The 45-
ton amphibious craft built by Bell
Aerospace Canada Division of
Textron Canada Ltd., Grand
Bend, is being operated by
Agence Maritime Inc., a division
of LOgistec. '
The program is being spon-
sored by the Quebec Ministry of
Transport, Marine Branch.
Bell Voyageur 044 was put into
service between the mainland
and the island on May 19, when it
was determined to carry loads of
more than 5 tons.
Being amphibious, the
Voyageur operates from beaches
without the need for docks.
Operating 8 to 5 weekdays, the
craft has hauled nearly 400 trucks
weighing up to 15 tons.
Since it moves on a layer of air
captured by its flexible skirt,
Voyageur has a top speed of more
than 50 miles per hour. It makes
the 21 2 mile trip from island to
shore in less than five minutes,
compared with 25 minutes for the
ferry,
Service to the island follows a
six-month trial operation with the
Agence Maritime fleet delivering
cargo to remote communities
along the Lower North Shore of
Quebec. This cargo duty was
performed in temperatures as
low as -29C.
The craft traveled over water,
snow, ice, sand and grass during
the operation.
