Following the tour, the ladies

the business session had been

from a. 1905 local newspaper

Eggs were then selling for 13
cents a dozen, honey for 9 cents a
pound, and you could buy a whole
dozen stalks of celery for only 30

Girl to date: "Gosh! It's just like
Romeo and Juliet - my father
hates you!"
By Joy Scheifele
Early last October saw the
beginning of many a young
mother's dream come true when
a "Take-A-Break" group was
formed in the area.
This year the group will be
meeting in the old Ailsa Craig
Public school, Here they will have
better facilities and larger area
than what was available at the
Nairn town hall.
On Tuesday, September 9, an
initial get acquainted meeting
will be held from 9:00 to 11:00
a.m. and any mothers with pre-
school children are invited to
attend.
The purpose of the meetings is
to provide an opportunity for
mothers to take a break from
their weekly routine and to
participate in crafts, or in
discussions.
While the mothers are relaxing
with a change of pace, the
children usually have lively time
as well socializing with their
peers under the careful super-
vision of volunteer babysitters.
Last year saw an average of
twenty mothers taking part with
usually more than twice as many
pre-schoolers, Films, speakers,
hobbies, discussions and crafts
were some of the activities which
took place.
Transportation is also a co-
operative affair, and member
arrange to pick up anyone
needing a ride to and from
meetings.
New members are welcomed at
any point, and especially invited
to attend the first meeting of the
season on September 9 at the old
Ailsa Craig public school.
"We hope that the community
will use it as well", pointed out
administrator Scott Hortop. "We
would very much like to have it
used by senior citizens groups,
cancer society or other
organizations for meetings.
"There is also a possibility", he
continued "that it could be used
as a day care centre by the
community".
The philosphy of the home is to
bring as much of the community
to the home as possible since
many of the residents are unable
to reach out to the community
themselves.
"We hope to develop a
retirement community around
the home", stated Mr. Hortop.
"Land has been set aside which is
now needed for drainage pur-
poses, for a senior citizens
housing project and family
housing. As soon as sewers are put
through Parkhill these will be
developed."
Also land beside the Nursing
Home has been offered to any
group who is willing to build a
swimming pool on it.
The new home has been built by
contractors, Steeves and Rozema
of Sarnia. Vic Heinrichs, ar-
chitect, of Toronto designed the
home, and it was financed with
the aid of Victoria and Grey Trust
Company of Stratford.
The official inspection by the
Ministry of Health took place on
Tuesday of this week. Before a
nursing home can begin
operation, it must be fully in-
spected and approved by a team
of specialists from the govern-
ment. Pending their assent, a
date will be set for the com-
munity to be invited to view the
new structure, as well as a time
set aside for an official opening
when a ribbon cutting ceremony
will take place.
