FUNERAL HOME 370 WILLIAM ST, EXETER 235-1220 I think I have been ripped off by a moving company, Here is what happened, At the beginning of April I moved from Kitchener to Ex- eter and the movers quoted me an estimate for the job. Well at this end I was informed first of all that it would cost me $25.17 more than the original price, and secondly that my cheque was no good unless it was certified. When I protested on both counts, I was told that their new price was final and that they wouldn't unload without cash or a certified' cheque. I then phoned their office who told me that, "it was still only an estimate", and to pay the bill by cash, which they said I could do by going to my bank's Exeter branch and having them phone through to their Kitchener branch. Since I had no choice I did this, but of course this cost me more money for the phone call. I was very upset at all this extra aggravation but fully expected to be compensated by the moving firm in due course. Now I get a letter to say that I'm getting no refund! What can I do? The Ontario Movers Association considered your request for a refund but they feel the mover was right. Because, they were within 6 percent on their estimate and that is within the tolerance for estimates in the moving industry. SEE US FIRST FOR ALL SPORTING NEEDS YOUR 411 MAIN ST. EXETER H&K ..... Exactly, when is a strike illegal? It is always illegal for union members to go out on strike while there is still a collective agreement in force between their union and the employer. All disputes under the agreement are sup- posed to be settled by binding arbitration instead of strikes. In addition it is illegal for certain classes of government employees to strike at any time. I am a Quaker, and I have been called upon to testify in a criminal case. As you may know, many Quakers have conscientious objections to the taking of oaths. Is this likely to get me into any trouble? No. Under the Canada Evidence Act, if a person has religious or conscientious objections to taking an oath, he or she is allow- ed to testify under a "solemn affirmation" that they will tell the truth. The affirmation has the same effect in law as a sworn oath. So you need merely inform the court of your scruples before you are called upon to testify, and you will not be asked to swear an oath. Exeter Ben 509 MAIN STREET ORIGINAL Flowers & Gifts 9, OIL PAINTINGS FrA BUY OR LEASE J. L. HOOGENBOOM 235-0111 Ours is not really a problem but more of a question that we need an answer to. My fiance and I are hoping to get married early next year. We realize that this is a big step to take and in plain language we are both mature adults and realize that it may not work out, so we would like to give it a fair trial say for a period of 3 years or so. What we both want to know is, if it's possible to make out a marriage contract stating that if it doesn't work out, we will dissolve it or agree to a divorce after a 3 year period. As we're not planning on having children we won't have that on our consciences. Phew — quite a question! frankly we think Ann Landers would have been more at home with this sort of thing, so perhaps you should direct it to her, however this much we can tell you, and that is, our law does not recognize this sort of contract, If is con. sidered absolutely void, as "contrary to the nature of marriage". Unless Canada introduces divorce by consent, you cannot con- tract to get a divorce. S TAY HARP ALES AND ERVICE Specializing in .
