To increase IDB facilities The Industrial Development Bank is trying to make its facilities better known and more readily available in the Exeter area. An experienced representative of IDB, H. A. Sheldon, has recently been assigned the specific responsibility of han- dling financing proposals from the Exeter territory. He will be operating out of the Stratford district office, which administers the IDB programs in Perth and Huron Counties. In the above capacity, Mr. Sheldon will conduct pre- advertised visits to Exeter (on the 2nd Tuesday of each month) for the purpose of making IDB's financial and advisory services available to local businesses. Mr, Sheldon will also be in the area several times monthly on an informal basis, to conduct follow- up credit studies as well as to respond to requests for advice on the bank's functions from local financial institutions, chartered accountants and municipal of- ficials on behalf of their clients. The IDB, established in 1944 as a subsidiary of the Bank of Canada, makes loans to new or existing businesses of all types for a variety of purposes. While there are no limits on loan amounts, almost 80 percent of the bank's loans are for $50,000 or less, reflecting the bank's special focus on providing assistance to smaller businesses, where the proposal is sound and financing is not available elsewhere on reasonable terms and conditions in keeping with the needs of the operation, In addition to financial assistance, IDB is issuing a series of helpful brochures on small business management which are available on request, at no charge. IDB also organizes, through its branch offices and with the assistance and co- sponsorship of district Chambers of Commerce, management seminars to help owners and operators of tanner businesses improve their management skills. Speakers on the functions of the bank are also provided for civic, professional and Service club meetings on request, About 300 persons from Newfoundland to British Columbia and six U.S. states arrived in Huron Park Tuesday, for the 1975 Canadian Nationals for model airplanes held on the weekend, It was a gala event for fellow enthusiasts, Students, businessmen, doctors, lawyers, teachers, people from all walks of life travel miles to participate in the events, of control line flying, free flight and radio control. Most of the modellers know each other from previous com- petitions and after the flying everyone gets together around the campfires, the old timers and the young beginners, to talk airplanes. "Modelling's not a known sport," said Warren Hitchcox, president of the Model. Aeronautics Association of Canada, sponsors of the event. "But it's becoming increasingly popular, there are 4,200 registered modellers and our membership has increased about 25 percent over the past year." "The purpose of the com- petition is to choose teams to represent Canada at the world championships. Canada is one of 43 countries involved in the sport, Nine free flight members will be chosen to go to Bulgaria at the end of August and three radio control operators will be in Berne, Switzerland, September 8- List amendments for motor bikes Exeter police chief Ted Day told the T-A this week that amendments to the Highway Traffic Act concerning the use of motor assisted bicycles had received Royal Assent and were now in effect. Day said, "a motor assisted bicycle means a bicycle, (I) fitted with pedals which are operable at all times to propel the bicycle. (II) weighing not more than 120 pounds, (III) which has no hand or foot operated clutch or gearbox driven by the motor and tran- sferring power to the driven wheel. (IV) having an attached motor driven by electricity or having a piston displacement of not more than 50 cubic centimetres and which does not have, sufficient power to enable the bicycle to attain a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on level ground within a distance of one mile from a standing start, To discourage beach camping Grand Bend council decided Tuesday night to place signs on the beach to discourage over- night parking and camping. The present bylaw restricts anyone on the beach between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. but signs have not been in evidence to inform the public. Council also decided to keep the gates of the beach parking lot locked until 9 a.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Council authorized the placing of an ad in area papers to ad- vertise the sale of the present street sweeper. George Kadlecik, president of the Grand Bend Chamber of Commerce was in attendance to ask for a grant for 1975 to aid in promotion of the village. A grant of $1,500 was authorized to be paid in August and September. An amount of $120 will be deducted from the grant. This consists of several bills paid by the village earlier this year. "I'm here for one purpose to get funds for the Chamber, We have started off with a bang this year but we need more monies to keep the information booth open." He continued, "We did quite well on our Buffaloburger Days project but we built a new booth." Kadlecik said he thought the C of C would have to concentrate on weekends and winter events. A recent kite flying contest was far from being a success. 13," explained Mr. Hitchcox, Warren Hitchcox, Ivan Kristenson and Garry Reush, the radio control flyers representing Canada, are famous names in modelling, circles. However don't be discouraged from trying the sport, even if you've never stepped inside an airplane before, you can be an expert in a matter of months. In fact, many modellers say it is a handicap to have pilot ex- perience. One of the few women flyers in Canada, in fact the only one at the competing Canadian Nationals was Lynda McDonald, 30, of Toronto. Secretary-treasurer of M.A.A.C. Ms. McDonald has been competing since 1971 in pattern flying. That is, doing aerobatics The body of a man washed up on the shores of Lake Huron at Grand Bend Tuesday morning has been identified as 42-year-old Charles Donovan of Downsview. Corporal H. G. Prentice of the Grand Bend detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police told the T-A Wednesday that Donovan had been renorted missing Monday afternoon by his wife. The couple were vacationing at Grand Bend. Three crash in Pinery Three accidents were in- vestigated this week by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police at the Pinery Park. Monday July 28 vehicles driven by Enrico Arpa, Weston, Ontario and Brian Brooks, Thedford, collided at Port Franks. Con- stable R. D. Hendley set damages at $325. Thursday, Fiona A. Nemeth of London was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in London after the vehicle she was driving left County Road 3 in Port Franks and struck a fence and tree. Constable R. G.Wilkinson listed damages at $700. Greg Hersherger of Royal Oak, Michigan was treated at South Huron hospital, in Exeter for minor injuries suffered when he was struck by a mirror on a motor home operated by Bruce L. Houck. During the week, 11 thefts were reported to the detachment with property valued at $1,400 taken. Of this amount $657 was recovered. with a radio controlled airplane on a set schedule. She owns her own plane, a baby blue superstar, HP61, with a 1 horsepower engine. Lynda is in the C novice class which means she's a pretty good flyer. C novice is one class below C expert which is the top class. "you don't have to know anything about airplanes, or about engines," says the slim auburn haired modeller, "If you have a lot of time, and if you are really keen on the sport you can learn to fly in a couple of mOn- ths," "At first my male competitors were a little surprised and a bit resentful at a female entering a traditionally male sport," she explained with a laugh, "But now I'm just one of the guys," The body was found about 8 p,m, Tuesday by a group of people walking along the beach in the area adjacent, to the Lakeview Casino. Coroner Dr. Charles Wallace of Lynda's ultimate goal is to be on the Canadian team and watching her fly her superstar with competence and expertise one would say she stands a fair chance of reaching that goal, Sunday night it was all over, campers were being repacked, trailers hitched and cars loaded, "Everybody in? Let's got" Some left with trophies, others with memories of a good time, "not too much luck but it was a lot of fun." "It can be a heartbreaking sport, if your plane takes a nose dive into the tarmac at 60 miles per hour on Tuesday what do you do for the rest of the week?" You build another plane, that's what, maybe it'll be ready for the next competition, Most modellers carry two planes one built and Zurich is conducting the autopsy. Police believe drowning to be the cause of death, Corporal E. Prior and Con- stable P.P. R. Allerston are in charge of the investigation, one half finished. it's an art, a lot of modellers make their own planes from modified published plans or design their own, many look very authentic right down to the last rivet made of glue and placed with an eye dropper. All aviation began with modelling. The great pioneers Da Vinci, Langley, the Wright brothers, were all modellers. Today, as then, modelling plays a role in the development of the S.S.T,, Apollo, and other projects in the wind tunnel models, and in mockups. Young and old alike can ex- press their creativity in the design, construction and flying of model aircraft. Modelling has paved the way for many a pilot, engineer and mechanic in the development of patience, ac- curacy, reflex actions and problem solving. The Model Aeronautics Association was established in 1949 by the RCFCA, The Royal Canadian Airforce and leading model builders of the time, who could see the value of a nation- wide organization to guide and direct aeromodelling affairs. It was their object to draft rules for competition, establish standards for safe flying practices, and to educate modellers to carry on the sport with due respect for the rights of other citizens. The duties of the M.A.A.C. in- clude the licencing and insuring of model flyers, establishes rules and regulations for Canadian model aircraft flying, sanctions competitions, recognizes record performances, maintains an organization of zones, and charter clubs across Canada. The association also prepares publications; Model Aviation Canada magazine is published monthly, and encourages the sport of model aircraft flying throughout the Dominion, SMALL BUT MIGHTY — Doug Lambert of Ottawa adjusts the control line on his biplane at the Canadian Nationals sponsored by the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada at Huron Park July 28-August 3.
