Operating expenses are only afraction of what the cost of hospital care would be for those involved, Regular houseparents Mr, & Mrs. Art Gingrich of Meadowcrest,Mr. & Mrs, Vernon Ciemmer of Crestview, Mr. & Mrs. William Kirby of Crestwood maintain the necessary en- couragement arid support. Consultation with social workers from the hospital is available. Because the residents of the home have riot been able to successfully cope with the hectic, competitive pace society frequently demands, a program has been carefully designed to help each person develop his potential within the setting of the working area and daily living Each contributes his share to the life of the family group. Routine cooking, laundry/ cleaning anc the farm chores are all the responsibility of the residents Ten acres of land surroundi each home, with large barn anc workshop. Much of this land it cultivated for market gardening and home use. They are widely recognized ,for their homemade bread, pies and cookies. Residents are encouraged to identify with the community and participate in community ac- tivities. Through "Crest Industries", further development of home industries and crafts is in operation. They have a large demand for the picnic tables being built. Plans are also un- derway to refinish old furniture along with other projects in the future. Thus in this extended family setting and program of warmth and security, Meadowcrest, Crestview and Crestwood sy Jay Scheifele A need - a dream - and finally reality! This is the story of the three storey "twin houses" located on the north side of No. 7. highway just west of Elginfield, Early in 1970, Ruth E, Bacon, social worker at the London Psychiatric Hospital was faced with extreme difficulties in rehabilitating some of the patients back into the community through the then existing resources. It was recognized that a new program with a fresh approach was desperately needed. After careful study and planning, "Meadowcrest" came into being in the spring of 72, A "family" of twelve persons ranging in ages from the mid- twenties to mid-sixties moved into a large, comfortable farm home situated on the south side of the Nairn Gravel Road, just east of McKichan's corners. The house is leased, but has been specially renovated to fit the needs of the program, Here at Meadowcrest persons who have been patients at the hospital, but who no longer require the hospital setting, yet for various reasons are unable to return home, come together as a family and live active, produc- tive lives under the care and guidance of houseparents, As a pilot project, Meadowcrest was continuously watched. Its success was noted, and in December 1974 a second family of fourteen persons moved into the newly constructed home known as Crestview, This is the first of the large "twin houses" on No. 7 highway just west of Elginfield. Late in January 1975, the third family was born at Crestwood - the second twin home found beside Crestview. Thus the three homes complete the Crest program. The homes are operated by a Board of Directors made up of eight interested citizens, and are AT More Music KESTLES APIARY CLANDEBOYE Friday and Saturdays N.1111111ItittlittlftlItlItttft1111111111111111111111111111k1111111111111M1111111111111,1111111111111111111111111flii By Joy Scheifele Heavy iron bars secure the doors. The sign reads, "Thieves Market", "What is it?" everyone questions. Some wonder if they even dare enter! And this is just what proprietor Ernie Rentz projected when he artfully renovated the old, historic building on Main Street in Ailsa Craig recently. He prefers to draw his customers into the establishment through curiosity rather than by attracting them through the conventional means of attracting them by window displays. But even as one intrudes into the dim interior, one would possibly find, it a bit difficult to label his wares. Items abound to delight almost any collector's heart. In one corner stands a bucket of buttons. Beside them sits a box of quaint old, velour hats. On the shelves are stretched out fascinating old printing blocks of every description while tucked away in yet another corner are historic deeds. Glancing upwards one spies a wooden model which was somewhat of a mystery. "Oh," replies Ernie non- chalantly,"That's a model of an unfinished building that was used in a court case". Throughout one finds several rare and valuable items. Included is a set of instruments in a beautifully lined box. "It's the equipment for the artificial in- semination of mares," Ernie asserts. "And judging from the box the instruments are in, it probably dates back as far as the 1860's." Ernie himself was born in Manitoba, but left there with his family at the age of eight, After several years of travelling about and working at a wide assort- ment of jobs, he operated a used bookstore in Thunder Bay. London attracted him, and for three years he continued in the book market there until moving to Ailsa Craig recently, He has skilfully transformed the old building on the north side of Main Street which a number of years ago was occupied by Meadows Grocery Store. The shop is open on Saturday and Sundays only, leaving time during the week for the owner to hunt out new and interesting items to add to others' collec- tions, ERSMAN'S BAKERY Exeter 235-0332 Closed For • Holidays August 4 to August 18 ihdusive
