Facing city opposition
By the time this issue of the T-A hits the streets this
writer should be in Saskatoon or points farther west on the
beginning of a three week vacation,
Besides sightseeing, along with a bit of camping we
hope to get in some fishing and Should have a few tales
about the big ones that got away,
This is probably the second most difficult column to
write during the year with a holiday impending. The
toughest will likely be the first one back to work again in
August,
We hope to arrive back in time to join in with the
Dashwood folks in their annual Friedsburg Days celebra-
tion, The committee in charge is working hard to make this
year's event bigger and better than ever. It starts on Fri-
day, August 1 with an evening talent show, lots of Gerrpan
food and crowning of a Friedsburg Days Queen.
Saturday's program will feature a parade which" is ek-
pected to be bigger and better than ever, Parades in the
past have been excellent so we look for a tremendous
march this year.
Area strong men are already in training for the tug-of-
war contest. The arm wrestling events have been broaden-
ed to include ladies this year.
Squirts tie in soccer set
In North American Midget Cup
preliminary soccer action at
Clarke Road High School, London
last week, the Exeter squirts
found themselves up against
strong opposition in the form of
the London East All Stars. The
game ended in a 1-1 tie, with an
enthusiastic ,crowd of over 200
witnessing a fine display of
soccer by two well matched
teams.
Exeter played their usual game
of early pressure, and were
rewarded with a goal in the first
few minutes of play when centre-
forward Scott Lovie Converted a
penalty-kick.
The visitors continued to press,
but failed to. break through a
strong London defence and had to
be content with a 1-0 lead at half-
time.
After the interval London
gradually gained some pressure,
and they equalized 10 minutes
into -the second-half with what
appeared to be an offside goal.
Exeter came back and were
unlucky not to score in the closing
minutes of play, but again it was
the London full-backs who saved
the day.
Most outstanding player of the
game was Exeter's Steve Gould,
who worked extremely hard in
both defence and attack.
In the Huron minor soccer
league last week, the Exeter
squirts had a *4-0 victory against
the Seaforth Knights, with goals
coming from Scott Lovie (2/I,
Rick Gilfillan and George Pratt.
At Goderich, the squirts scored

DashwoodTigers picked up two the end of the first, Hoffman,

scoring.
Craig scored for Arva in the
fourth but Dashwood came back
to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the
inning as, Gibson scored after
reaching base as a hit batter..
The final run of the game went
to Arva in the top of the fifth as
Plaine scored just before the
game was called.
Double Zurich

Sunday night!
Dashwood gained a 4-0 lead in
the fifth with Stover. Tinrtman,

in the sixth as he walked and
scored on Hartman's single.
Zurich came to life with Our
runs in the sixth with Overholt,
McKinnon, Schilbe and Bedard
crossing home plate,
The three final runs of the
game by Parsons, Hayter and
Guenther came in the final
frame.

entire game for the Tigers. Pat
Bedard started for Zurich and
was relieved by Schilbe. John
Hayter was top batter with three
singles.
Ron Funston, John Rasenberg
and Robert Finkbeiner scored the
Exeter goals. Dave Worby drew
assists on all three scoring plays.
Atoms lose
The Atoms travelled to Clinton
for their only contest and came
out on the short end of a 3-2 count,
despite some outstanding play in
the final 10 minutes when they
battled for the tie.

decialons in their two outings of
the week.

regulation play and two overtime
periods.
The game was decided by five
penalty shots taken by each
squad. West Lorne were suc-
cessful on their five attempts,
while Exeter missed one and
were handed the loss.

by Jim Merrylees scored the
Park's 'first run.

An interesting air show
Members of the Exeter Lions club who have just
completed one large project in building the new tennis
courts at Exeter Community park just east of the Exeter
public school are busy planning another.
This time it's an event which the 'ALMS hope will bring
in some revenue to assist in their many community and ser-
vice projects.
The Lions are sponsoring an air show to be held at the
Huron Park airport on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and
17. We sat in on an executive meeting of the Lions Wednes-
day night when they met with two of the men involved in
bringing the air show to this area.
The organizer is Stu Holloway of Guelph and the
featured performer will be Gerry Younger, Canada's
national aerobatic champion in his SIS Pitts.
Listening to Holloway and Younger make their presen-
tation and co-ordinating planning with the Lions we can
assure all interested persons that the air show will certain-
ly be of high calibre.
Gerry Younger's single place Pitts is capable of speeds
up to 220 miles per hour and can execute a 360 degree snap
roll in the wink of an eye.
Powered by a 180 horsepower 360 cubic inch Lycoming
engine, the sleek little biplane climbs at over 2,600 feet per
minute on its 17 foot, four inch wings.
Stu Holloway, who is also the commentator for the
show told the Lions Wednesday that "it's an all-Canadian
show and will give a good outline of all aspects of flying,"
Included in the show will be gliders, parachutists,
water bombers, special replicas of several planes. An On-
kario Provincial Police helicopter will also be in attendance
`to show how it is utilized in police work throughout the
province.
Lions president Frank Giffin and his hard working
cohorts including Doug Knowles, Larry Snider, Jack
Malone, Ned Ryan, Clarence McDowell and many, many
others will ensure an excellent air show for the two days,
August 16 and 1 7.
Tennis courts busy
While talking about the Lions club tennis courts,
recreation director Jim McKinlay tells us the use by the
general public to date has been tremendous.
Tremendous should be the word used to describe line-
ups waiting to get onto the courts at 6:30 in the morning,
McKinlay say there is quite a backlog of would be tennis
players in the evenings.
A tennis club was formed this week and this group
should be very beneficial in organizing times and schedules
for public participation.
The committee will be erecting a bulletin board at the
courts for persons to book their playing time. They are ask-
ed to register 24 hours in advance and limit the length of the
time needed to a maximum of one hour.
McKinlay says the. committee will be attempting to
educate the public to share this community facility, For the
time being the courts will be kept open 24 hours a day but he
adds, "but it's up to everybody to keep their eyes open to
discourage vandalism. They will be kept open until the com-
munity proves we have to lock the gates."
The newly organized tennis club committee includes
Janice Frayne, Anne Dingwell, Pat Cottrell, Al Rankin and
Art Whilsmith.
Another successful venture
While interest is again high this year in all swimming
programs at the Exeter pool officials are pleased with the
response for adult classes
The first session for adults is completely filled and
registration is going well for future classes. This response
is encouraging. It shows the awareness of adults of the need
to learn to swim.
With the great response for adult swimming, Jim
McKinlay said this week, "This hit home to me, that our
department may have been somewhat remiss in the past in
not providing enough recreation for young married adults
between the ages of 20 and 45 years." ,
McKinlay suggested that in the past the greatest
emphasis has been put on youngsters with a little more con-
cern shown in the past year for senior citizens but the in-
between ages may have been neglected to a degree.
Better tiger days
We haven't said much in this column recently about our
favourite big league ball team, the Detroit Tigers. Like
Tiger faithful "Batch" Wolfe put it "nothing to say about
them,"

themselves up by the boot straps, because that's about as
low as they have been,
