On Monday evening they went roller skating and enjoyed it for it was something different for most of them. This was followed by a marshmallow roast. They had some fun and games the following day and went home in the mid-afternoon. The members involved were Marg Pym, Donna Kerslake, Barb Skinner, Joan Cooper, Greg Hem, Brad Skin- ner, Doug Cooper, Catherine Johns, Nancy Cooper, Eleanor Johns and Kathy Cooper. The Elimville Centennial Beard Growing Contest was held at the church Wednesday evening July 2, Mrs. Elaine Webber, chairman for the evening, welcomed everyone. Allen Pym read a poem. Mrs. Marjorie Johns provided music while the contestants entered. Mrs. Alice MacLean decided Hubert Heywood had the "softest beard." Mrs. Ross Haugh and Linda provided a lunch for the workers at noon. Thursday morning the van arrived with the household effects of Rev. & Mrs. Bruce Pierce from Abbey, Saskatchewan. The Manse Committee, Mrs. Lorne Presz- cator, Mrs. William Schwartz, Mrs. Hugo Schenk, Mrs. Russell Finkbeiner and Mrs. Ross Krueger, have been in charge of renovations. Ruth Finkbeiner is enrolled at the Marvel School of Hair- dressing in London. Four of the class of eleven are men. Mr. & Mrs. Robert Jackson By MR. MELVIN DURR Mr. & Mrs. Louis Reynolds of Clandehoye visited Mr. & Mrs. Roy Dennison, Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. H. Prance attended the recent centennial at Listowel. Norman Wilson is clearing land on the sand ridge on the Haig Farm, south west on the marsh for corn. Mr. & Mrs. John Gibson and Paul Young, Strathroy have recently joined the staff at the Haig Farm. Bill Hall has been clearing land with a bulldozer. Mr. & Mrs. Wilfrid West were at home over the weekend. Their daughter Mrs. Long and Shanna of Bramalea were home a fort- night ago. John Wilson had a successful operation for cataracts. Kim Wilson is camping at Ipperwash, very close second. The contestants then waxed their moustaches and proceededto make handle bars. Norm Whiting decided Cliff Webber with Barry Robinson as a close second, had the best handle bar. Jerry MacLean, on behalf of himself, Mrs. Vesta Marshall and Clarence Millson, gave the judging results, They were as follows: contestant in the most appropriate centennial costume - Floyd Cooper; best groomed beard - Bruce Delbridge; most colorful beard - Cliff Webber; most colors in beard - Dan Traquair; longest beard - Martin De Jonge; bushiest beard - Squire Herdman; shiniest beard - Barry Robinson; beard most com- plementary to the contestants features and complexion - Howard Pym; shortest beard - Jim Lynn; honourable mention - Fred Delbridge. Squire Herdman was judged as having the best all round beard, Mrs. Madeline De Jonge presented gifts and Bill Routly presented trophies to all the contestants. have opened a store, The Jackson Mini Mart, in the Post Office building. Frank Verhuel of Watford, was guest speaker at Zion United Church Sunday morning, bringing a message on "Stephen the Martyr," Special music in song was provided by Harry Schroeder and Douglas Gill, Mr. Gill also joined the organist, Doug Lewis, in an organ-piano duet. The Sunday School picnic of Zion United Church was held Sunday afternoon in Riverview Park, Exeter. Harry Schroeder, superintendent, directed the programme of sports. Mrs. Cliff Kenney and Mrs. Ross Pickering supervised the serving of the potluck lunch. Mrs. Max Turnbull is spen- ding some time at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Lamport. Mrs. Lamport is her daughter. Rev. Armin Schlenker is a patient at South Huron Hospital. Home Economist Jane Pengilley has been checking the garden plots of 4-H members this week. Nola Faist and Doris Schwartz were in Stratford Sunday to at- tend the service at St. John's United Church where Rev. Fred Faist is pastor. In the afternoon, they visited the Rothman Gallery and Art-in-the-Park. Guests at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Jackson were their daughters Judy and Sadie with their families, Sgt. & Mrs. George Schnubb of Newfoun- dland, now stationed at Camp Borden; Mr. & Mrs. Mel Avery and family of Ottawa. Mr. & Mrs. J. L. Taylor of Georgetown, visited Mrs. Chris Dinney last Wednesday to celebrate Mrs. Dinney's bir- thday. Mr. & Mrs. Will Oestricher were guests last week of Mr. & Mrs. Orville Jones of Lucan. A pie-eating contest for the contestants followed, Mrs. Marjorie Johns decided Floyd Cooper was the messiest eater., Mr. Norm Whiting auctioned the beard of Floyd Cooper to the highest bidder that being his son Douglas. Snips were taken from the beards of Barry Robinson, Cliff Webber, Howard Pym and Dan Traquair. The judges and auctioneer were thanked and presented with gifts, Mr, & Mrs. Howard Johns and Mr. & Mrs. Allen Johns showed pictures of their trip to Cuba These were enjoyed by all.
