Will investigate oiling roads ,beach
parking lot dust to be rectified
The village of Grand Bend will
investigate the cost of oil
treatment of the beach parking
lots and other streets throughout
the village in an attempt to keep
:tiro at a minimum.
At Monday night's session,
village council discussed the
possibility of applying liquid
calcium but it was felt that an oil
treatment was less expensive and
did a better job.
Roads chairman Rollie Grenier
\vitt also determine the cost of
applying some method of dust
control to the sides of many of the
paved roads within the village.
Under consideration for the oil
treatment are Gill Road, Kit-
chener Street and Morenz Lane.
A letter of complaint regarding
the condition of roads within
Gibb's Park was received by
council and will be turned over to
Harold Gibb since the village is
not responsible for maintenance
within the pc*.
Reeve Sharen explained that
until the roads are brought to
standard and officially accepted
by the village, maintenance
cannot be performed by the
village.
Works foreman John. Stein
reported that the new village
truck would be arriving this week
and would be properly lettered
before put into operation.
Mr. Stein also requested
council's authorization of a tow-
away zone at the end of Albert
Street. He explained that the
village works crew were often
forced to carry garbage from the
area some distance due to the
interference of improperly
parked cars,
A survey and design of a proper
drain system for the area on
River Road near the public
washrooms was authorized.
Councillor Bill Baird com-
mented that the action was
needed hut an immediate solution
to the drainage problem in the
area was also required, Coun-
cillor Rollie Grenier suggested
that an open ditch would allow
Village
request
refused
The feasibility of the village of
Grand Bend proceeding alone on
a river bank erosion prevention
program highlighted the Monday
night meeting of the village
council.
Earlier council had written to
the Ausable- Bayfield Con-
servation Authority with two
requests, The first was
authorization to proceed with an
engineering study to determine
the cost of the program. The
second request was asking the
Authority to assume the 25
percent share of the cost of the
program after provincial grants
covering the remaining 75 per-
cent had been approved.
Monday night, Grand Bend
received approval to go ahead
with the engineering study but
were turned down in their bid for
additional help from the
Authority.
A letter informed council that
the Authority's board of directors
had decided that Grand Bend
village would be the "benefiting
municipality" and as such would
he responsible for the 25 percent
share of the cost of the program.
It has been suggested that the
program will cost in the range of
$100,000 which would require the
village to pay $25,000,
The letter also cautioned the
village against proceeding with
the engineering study unless it
was seriously intending to
complete the work suggested by
the study. It was pointed out that
the village had a similar study
approved some years ago and
then did nothing. The Authority
approved having the original
study updated by the same firm.
The letter from the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority
also informed council that the
Authority would continue to in-
vestigate the possibility of
receiving help through the ARDA
program which had been
suggested earlier,
Use of the washrooms im-
mediately but councillor Baird
commented that the open drain in
the area at present is "pathetic".
Council authorized the hiring of
a bulldozer to move sand on the
north beach from the westerly
limits of the private property
closer to the waterline, This
action was designed to keep the
sand from encroaching on the
lawns of private cottages in the
area and also to cover unsightly
stones and sticks which have
become uncovered in the area.
The area in question extends
from Oakwood to the slide.
Ratepayers in the area have
agreed to have the sand moved to
the west of a cement wall along
the beach,
It was also suggested that snow
fence be utilized in the future to
keep the drifting of beach sand at
a minimum,
The washrooms on River Road
are to be locked immediately,
Keys for the washroom which
appear to be missing will be used
if found. Otherwise the
washrooms will be padlocked
closed due to problems with the
drainage.
