doctors had to agree to be'on call
in rotation in return for being
given privileges at the hospital.
When advised that the nurses
on occasions had to take the
responsibility of finding a dOctor
for emergencies, Dr. Hardin 'said
this was an "unfair respon-
sibility" and that the nurse
should know exactly which doctor
was on call, particularly for
situations involving emergericy
treatment of patients involved in
accidents who may not have a
local family doctor.
While it was noted that nurses
at the hospital had never faced
the problem of not being able to
locate a doctor, Dr. Hanlin
replied "the thing that doesn't,
often happen, always happens".
He suggested the hospital
administrator should protect his
hospital by demanding that the
doctors practicing there set up a
schedule whereby one would be
on.call around, the clock.
Dr. Wallace explained that the
area doctors working at South
Huron Hospital have a duty
system for Wednesdays and
weekends, but agreed there may
be some lack of communication
in getting this point across to the
public.
Dr, Conlon advised that in
emergency situations, people
should 'call an ainhultnieearld get
to the hospital,
Dr. Hanlin tiuestiOned if
the situationcould arise Where all
the doctors could be Out town,
each believing another would be
available to take his place.
One of the ladies present said it
had been a standing suggestion
that it was most unwise to get
sick in Exeter on Wednesday
because medical assistance
would not be available.
Dr. Wallaee said thatlocal
service was good 97 percent of the
time, but the three people out of
100 for Wholn it goes- wrong "on
raise an awful stink".
In concluding the Meeting, he
said "maybe we'll try again",,
