SHOW SURPLUS
The financial statement for the
year 1974 has been received by
the council of the village of Lucan
and shows a surplus for the year
ending, December 3,1, 1974,
The report showe d a surplus of
$27,732 for the year bringing the
accumulated surplus to $32,208.
The total revenue for the year
amounted to $274,350, an increase
of $41,650 from 1973. In the same
vein, expenditures were up to
$246,618 from $217,312 of the year
previous.
The statement of revenue of the
Lucan-Biddulph fire area showed
an excess of receipts over ex-
penditures of $1,599.08,

An excellent smorgasbord
supper was provided by all
families present, The beverage
was supplied by the UCW with
Mrs. Ross Holden and Mrs. Dale
Froats in charge.
The afternoon closed with a
singsong, led by Mrs. Madden
and an out-of-doors Vesper
Service on the theme "Beauty",,
led by Mrs. M. H. Hodgins
assisted by Wendy Hearn, Pat
Bates and Mrs. Holden.

attended the 40th wedding an-
niversary celebration in honor of
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Wallis at
Russeldale Hall on Saturday
evening June 21.

Baseball news
In a very close and exciting
game at Granton park the senior
girls emerged the winners in a
game against Fullarton on
Thursday night. The score was
24-20 for Granton,

We welcome Mr. & Mrs. (Bill
& Betty )Jacklin from London and
their five children.
Bill & Betty will take over the
store from the 1st of July. We
wish them all success in their
new undertaking.
We are sorry to see Dick, and
Robert, Rickie, Wendy and Dana
leave Granton as they have been
so active in the community. We
OUTSTANDING
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Abbott may
well be proud of their four
children.
Muriel, Mrs. Mike Anderson, of
Lucan, who is taking a nursing
course at U, of W.O. and working
part time during the year at
Parkwood Hospital, passed all
her exams with a 73 percent
average.
Wesley, a Grade 10 student,
Catherine, Grade 9 and Carol
Ann, Grade 8, all passed without
writing.
To top it all, Wesley was one of
the students chosen to spend 2
weeks in Vancouver.
TRUSTEES MEET
The trustees of Nursery
Cemetery met at the home of Mr.
And Mrs. Sheridan Revington on
June 17 for their annual meeting.
Mrs. Livingston is the
chairlady of4.:the board and
conducted the business. The
minutes of the last meetng were
read, and Ray Neil gave the
treasurers report.
There has been more money
turned in for debentures, which
brings it almost to our goal. ,A
number of new plots• have been
laid out in the north portion of the
cemetery and are for sale.
After the meeting a lovely
lunch was served by the hostess.
SCHOOL NEWS
The grade 8 students at the
Biddulph school sponsored a hot
dog sale at noon on Monday.
A softball tournament for five
area schools, *Craigwood, East
Williams, McGillivray, Parkhill
and Biddulph was held on Friday
June 20.
The boys played at Biddulph
with McGillivray winning top
place and Parkhill tying with
Biddulph for second place.
The girls from Biddulph played
at East Williams, in a 4 school
area, Craigwood being a boys'
school, placed third, with
McGillivray 1st, and East
Williams second.
The graduation banquet for
Biddulph is being held tonight,
Thursday, with dinner at 7 p.m.
At the graduation banquet at
St. Patrick's last Thursday
evening Mrs. Beth Radcliffe of
Lucan was introduced as the
teacher for the. new Junior
Kindergarten class, starting in
September, and Mrs. Mary
Maxwell (nee Jorna) of London,
will be the new Grade 6 teacher,

Church welcomed the Oddfellows
and Rebekahs from Perth
District 13, which embraces
lodges from Stratford, St. Mary's
and Lucan.
Rev, Mary McInally's sermon
was the last - in a series on
"Harnessing our Instincts, and
dealt with criticism, which can be
both constructive (good) or
destructive (bad).
The Sunday school pupils with
their teachers, celebrated the
50th Anniversary of Church
Union with a birthday party. A
cake decorated and made in the
shape of a church was enjoyed,
Mrs, Wm. Jones was responsible
for making it and the
decorations.
Flowers were placed in the
church by the family of the late
Arthur Baker. There were also
two baskets of flowers placed
there in memory of the lodge
members who had passed away
in the last year.
Next Sunday Granton United
Church will be celebrating it's
50th , Anniversary, A special
service is planned and guest
speaker will be the Rev. Anson
Moorehouse recently retired
director of Berkley Studios (the
United Church film making unit).
There will also be special
music, and at the close of the
service there will be a luncheon
provided by the UCW for all
present.
The oldest resident dies
Sympathy is extended to the
family and relatives of the late
Arthur Baker, who passed away
at St. Mary's Memorial Hospital
on Thursday June 19 in his 95th
year.
Mr, Baker rested at the C.
Haskett and son Funeral Home
until Saturday, where the service
was held. Rev. Mary Mclnally
Pastor of Granton United Church
officiated.
Interment was in the Exeter
Cemetery.
Pall hearers were David
Baker, Paul Baker, Elwyn
Bryan, Leroy Bryan, Hons Golz,
and Ron Squire, Flower bearers
were Fred Jones, Oliver Baker,
Marion Golz, and Arden Bryan.
Court Valentine COF meet
The final meeting of Court
Valentine before recessing for
the summer, was held in the
Forester's Hall on Monday
evening.
President Mrs. Larry Hern was
in the chair opened court and
conducted the business.
A letter was received by Bro.
Norman Hill, Public Relations
and Fraternal Director, hinting
that he would like to visit Court
Valentine in the near future- It
was proposed that the members
invite him for their Nov, meeting.
Tickets were distributed to be
sold towards the bus trip to visit
the Huron Country Playhouse,
Grand Bend on Thursday June 26.
A successful penny auction was
held. The proceeds were to be
given for Cancer research.
Plans were made to assist with
a wedding in September.
Women's Institute news
The Granton WI met at the
home of Mrs, Jules De
Bra bandere on Tuesday evening,
June 17, Mrs. Don Roloson
presided, and conducted the
business. •
The Roll Call was "tell where
and when you or your mother
was married."
The topic on the Tweedsmuir
History was convened by Mrs.
Geo, Wilson and Mrs. Clarence
Lewis. Mrs, Wilson named many
historical sites in Western
Ontario, mentioning that the
Anglican Church at Talbotville
was the oldest church in that part
of the Province.
Mrs. Lewis gave a reading
"Friday 13," and also read the
objectives of the Women's
Institute.
The newly elected district
president, Mrs. Martin Watson of
Parkhill paid her visit to the
Granton Branch,
Mrs. Watson spoke on the
motto "The current event of
today, will be history tomorrow,"
she said history is every man's
story, it is the long road on which
he travells, citing examples such
as the 50th anniversary of
Church Union, the history that
Dr, Bethune had made in China,
and the history of the Women's
Institute which is world wide.
A jumbled word contest was
won by Miss Elliott, Mrs. Wat-
son's sister who had ac-
companied Mrs. Watson as a
guest.
A reading by Mrs. Percy
Hodgins "Those Belgians" closed
the program.
Following the Institute Grace a
delicious dessert luncheon was
served by the hostess and con-
veners.

Shower for bride elect
A community shower was held
in the. United Church basement
on Wednesday evening to honor
Miss Margaret Egan, whose
marriage to Ron Wilson Landon
takes place on Friday evening

Nichol Reunion.
Mr, & Mrs. Elmer Harlton and

London.
Bruce Nichol of Guelph was
elected president.
Plans were made to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary in a special

Picnic marks church birthday

A rather small but enthusiastic
number of United Church
families gathered in the Lions
Club Park Sunday afternoon for
the second picnic in many, many
years. This one was to celebrate,
once more, the 50th Anniversary
of Church Union.
Games and races for pre-
schoolers were supervised by
Mrs, Ivan Hearn and Mrs. H. J.
Barnes of the Friendship Unit
and resulted as follows: running

Young Voyageurs, leaving
London by train on Saturday,
spending two days in Ottawa, and
then flying to Vancouver,
They will be away for two
weeks and in August will be hosts
to their new friends from Van-
couver.
