No matter how cautious we are, they still hap- pen. But that's no excuse for not trying to prevent them. I'll be travelling with you on the roads this weekend. I'll try to remember the safety rules, and I hope you'll practice them, too. Drive carefully, the life you save may be your own - or mine. We shouldn't restrict our precautions to the roads, though. Remember an accident can happen in anyplace, at anytime and to anyone. Let's make Dominion Day 1975 a happy and a safe holiday weekend. Yvonne Hendrick represented the club as Queen, while Emma Beaver and Yvonne Hendrick were representatives for K.O.P.S., "Keep off Pounds Sensibly." Delegates for the loss of 40 pounds or more were Marion Miller and Gladys Skinner. It was an enjoyable three days and was found to be both in- teresting and informative. Next year's convention will be held in Toronto, During the month, club members have enjoyed an GARDEN SALAD BOWL Summertime is picnic time. An overture from the Particular Synod of Michigan to have the _ordination of Ms, Joyce Stedge set aside was rejected last week by the denomination's highest judicatory, its General Synod. Meeting at Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Ill. June 9-13 The following recipe for strawberry pie filling was sent in by Mrs. Jean Hodgins, Clan- deboye. Jean freezes a number of these fillings at one time and stacks them in her freezer for future use, She has found they are easy to make and a good way to take advantage of the strawberry season. Frozen Strawberry Pie Filling 2 1/2 cups chopped strawberries 14 cup of sugar (more if you like it sweeter) 11 /2 tblsp. of cornstarch 11/2 tblsp. of minute tapioca Stir all ingredients together and pour into a foil-lined 9-inch pie plate. Cover with another piece of foil and place in freezer until frozen solid, It can be slipped out of the pie 'plate when frozen, leaving foil around it, and put in a plastic bag and labelled. These pie fillings when frozen can be stored in the freezer on their sides or piled one on the other, thus easily stored to save space. When cooking this filling in a pie bake. on the bottom rack of oven at 450 degrees F. for 20 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees F for another 40-45 minutes. If you wish to make several pie fillings at one time, place a sheet of firm cardboard between each pie plate and stack the General Synod voted 158-97 to take "no action" on the overture, This means that Ms, Stedge, a 49-year old mother of six who two years ago was ordained and installed as pastor of the Rochester Reformed Church, Accord, N.Y., will retain her unique position in a religious body that does not officially admit women to its ministry. them to freeze, Make sure they are sitting level during freezing. As in other communions, women's ordination has been a lively issue in the Reformed Church in the past few years. A change in the Book of Chur- ch Order to open the way for women ministers must be ap- proved by two-thirds of the ChUrch's 44 Classes, or local judicatories. This spring, for the third consecutive year, the proposal failed to achieve the necessary thirty votes, During last week's session, General Synod returned the question to the classes for a fourth time. Rev, Henry Van Essen of Bethel Reformed Church, Exeter was a delegate to the Synod. Let's hope we don't perience a repeat of the Vic- tia Day weekend incidents. ;.tittering and minor damage seem insignificant, however, when compared to the accidents that occur during a holiday. How many families will have their Dominion Day vacation marred by tragedy? On Tuesday morning, we'll hear the statistics of how many people died - unless our names are on the list. We'll read the reports of boating mishaps, drownings, fires and carnage on the highways, What causes most accidents? Carelessness, alcohol, drugs and driving too fast - all these things contribute to accidents. All these factors begin with individuals, and only we individuals can control them, All of us share the responsibility of preventing accidents; we can't always blame the other guy. We can watch the children more closely, even though they complain that we're nagging them. We can plan ahead; then hurrying won't be necessary. We can practice safety rules on the road and in the water, We can remain alert and use our heads, At a party, we can recognize our limitations. If we drink excessively, we shouldn't be too proud to call a cab. We can 'avoid unnecessary risks. Sometimes we shrug our shoulders and say, "I'll take my chances!" When we take chances, though, we jeopardize the lives of other people.
