KROH., O CSA standards ensure mobile home comfort On a request from the Canadian 'mobile home and Travel Trailer Association, CSA Standards were devised covering vehicular, structural, plumbing; gasioil and electrical .cOmponents and Published as the Z*10 series. CSA engineering staff examines and tests the units to ensure conformity with. con- ditions set in the Standards and puts the CM certification mark On those meeting or surpassing the Z240 requirements. It's a Total effort by CSA to make mobile living a safe and comfortable experience free from the worries and hazards of substandard materials and. improper installation. Structural Since mobile homes are generally for year round habitation, factors relating to structural integrity were sub- mitted to particularly exhaustive investigation. The structural components must be able to resist, without excessive deflection, specified loads of various natures. For example, both the roof and floor assemblies must be capable of withstanding 40 pounds per square foot and stay within the deflection limit. Other important factors are calculating the flame-spread ratings of interior panellings to determine fire resistance and measuring weather and con- densation resistance which specifically applies to colder conditions. The adequacy of the heating systems was subjected to con- siderable scrutiny to ensure comfort in all climatic con- ditions. Adequate quality control, proper design, intensive load testing and suitability of com- ponents all work together to make a durable and soundly constructed mobile home. Vehicular An important consideration of the total certification program is the vehiclar requirements since these have the greatest bearing on safety during transit. All CSA certified mobile homes and recreational vehicles must be provided with an effective braking system. If the unit has a tandem axle, each axle must be fitted with brakes. Lamp and reflectors, properly tested, are attached in a special manner to prevent accidents in poor visibility. Safety glass or its equivalent must be used for all truck camper trailers since they may be oc- cupied during transit, Couplings, tested and suitably identified, are inspected to ensure adequate mounting for safe towing. 'Othef significant safety features are safety chains, an automatic braking device and tire spray protection . . . all contributing 'to security in road travel. Electrical The CM requirements for the modern .mobile home and recreational vehicle have been updated to more closely conform to standard house wiriog. The electrical requirements assure the double protection of ample circuits and complete grounding of the entire unit. Not only mat the installation comply with recognized codes but the ap- pliances used in every unit =St be i,idividually CM certified, thus minimizing fire and shock hazards, Wiring to ceiling outlets must he suitable for temperatures up to 1.04 F, In mobile homes, receptacles are located not more than 12 feet apart to eliminate the need for extension cords, A dielectric strength test is conducted on each recreational vehicle and an insulation resistance test on mobile homes. These weed out any faults that are present in the electrical system, Why CSA Standards? Canadian Mobile Home and Travel Trailer Association of- ficials are convinced that CM methods come up with the right answer to some pretty complex problems. The CM 2240 Stan- dards series covering mobile homes and recreational vehicles is an outstanding example of how the Canadian Standards Association serves and protects the Canadian public. Further evidence can be found in the other 1200 published standards covering a diverse rfieldj from safety wearing apparel to household appliances, timber, welding apparel to household' appliances, timber, welding, plumbing products and automobile safety to name just a few. Standards and certification programs are CSA's unique contribution to building a better and safer Canada for all Canadians. What do the seals mean? The three combinations of seals assure the purchaser that- the manufacturer has met, or sur- passed CSA sTandards covering electrical requirements, gas and oil stipulations, plumbing ser- vices, structural soundness for. mobile homes and vehicular safety. Always look fot these seals of excellence which are a prospective buyer's guide to the purchase of a quality product. The Canadian Mobile Home and Travel Trailer,Association sums up what they think of the seals. "It's like earning your wings. We wear them proudly!"
